Their lifespan is something not to take lightly. I owned parrots since I was in my twenties - all rescued. I finally bought a baby African Grey baby around that time. She is now 30 years old and my only parrot. As I prepare for retirement, she makes it extremely difficult for me to travel. I cannot get rid of her, but she does cramp my current lifestyle. Another thing to remember is that parrots are expensive and messy to keep. In short -- they are a huge responsibility for the rest of your life.

I have a really good example of what Marlene is describing at number 9. My mom, when visiting for like idk the 10th time ever since I got my cockatiel, accidentally knocked over Hamilton's playground with her bag while he was sitting on it. Scared him shitless and he flew straight to me. And the next MANY TIMES she came to visit, he stayed away from her. Took her a long time to regain his trust, and her having had many animals in her home in her life, same as me, didn't understand why he continued to be so wary of her. And I had to explain that birds take a long time to trust someone and if you break that trust, it's gonna take even longer to regain it. He was my first bird, so I had researched a lot about this, but my mom of course hadn't so she didn't know. She's still in awe sometimes of how smart he is. Eventually he forgave her and now steps up on her hand and he likes to chill on her head. But it took a longass time, and she never made the same mistake again x'D

I think my caique is going through something similar. He loved my dad when we got him, cuddled him and all that- and then my dad had to go to hospital for a few days and when he returned my bird just wasn't the same around him. He now bites him to the point of bleeding, yelling at him and just generally being mean. Idk how to get him to like my dad again because he cant even be in the same room or a room across from him without him flying over to my dad and attacking him.

Getting a bird (especially a parrot) if you have a mental illness such as depression, anxiety, stress etc. is not the best idea either. I'm suffering from severe depression and anxiety. (tho I'm feeling much better now) Well, In the beginning, it was SOOO difficult to get along with my parrot, because whenever he bit me or flew away I would get SO sad. I constantly felt like I was the problem and that I was doing everything wrong. It's not that I blamed the bird, I blamed myself, which made me want to give up everything. Yet, here I am, bird sitting right next to me. Of course, a bird can be a GREAT therapy animal. Kiwi has brought me SO much joy and happiness, but holy crap has he brought me A TON of trouble too. And to everyone with depression I just wanna say that you ARE loved, you're brain is just mean ;)

I love it when she comes out with these videos of why some people should not own parrots. Yes they are awesome animals, but they are indeed a lot of work and they live a LONG time. I only have three at my house, 20-year-old cockatiel and 20-year-old lovebird I got when I was 4, and then a Princess of Wales in a large indoor acrylic aviary type cage. I just spent 2 hours yesterday preparing LOADS of their fresh chop of expensive organic vegetables to go in the freezer. But the main thing is I enjoy doing it and spending too much money on them for food and toys. My husband is absolutely not a bird person and thinks I'm insane for how much I put into them. But hey, love birds and cockatiels do not typically have a long lifespan above 20 years in captivity, so I know I'm doing something right :D

@@vecnq._.cuteeeeee8232 If you do not feel ready, then there is no rush to get a bird. It all has to do with where you are in your life, do you have time to spend with your bird, do you have the financial stability to sustain and help your bird thrive, and is everyone else in your household willing to pick up any slack? This is one important aspect I love about the dynamic between Marlene and George. Marlene is all about the education, training, and engagement of the parrots and knows she has some deficiency in the kitchen. But no worries because George can pick up that slack and is happy to do it.

Most needed video ever! Byrd chose me in 2002. I was hamburger, fries, and diet coke. I did loads of research (and continue to this day) but did not understand the importance of constant fresh food. I traveled for work and she went with me everywhere. She is my companion and Byrd shares meals. I was not offering her a healthy variety. I did buy some of the mixes you cook up, but as you said, since it was not my preference it was a lot of trouble and I did not take to it. Now, I am no soda, more plant-based, organic, fresh fruits and veggies. We are healthier. She is making me a better person.

Hi, Marlene, thank you for this video. It's so important that people know about how complicated they are so they don't end up owning a parrot and then not wanting it, ignoring it and causing the poor bird heart break that many people don't understand. You are saving many birds from grief and sadness doing this video!!! Thank you!!! Yes and people that don't eat healthy will make their birds sick and die young from unhealthy food. Birds are a lot of work! Even the little birds like mine :))) Love, and big hugs, kisses for birds. Barb, Baby, Beenie :)))

Thank you so much for all of the talk about kids owning birds!!! I want to add college students to your list. Because I was the dumb college student who (a few months before graduation) considered myself "settled" enough to get a bird. I thought I had a plan for post-graduation. Well, next thing you know, I got an internship that required me to move, and my parents didn't want to keep my bird. My poor cockatiel had to be rehomed. It was a really sad situation for this sweet bird... I'm also embarrassed to add the cockatiel I got in 8th grade and later rehomed because I didn't have time for it... I am so passionate about not getting birds when you are a child/very young adult. It really saddens me when I see posts on Parrot Station from kids/college kids asking what type of bird they should get. Everyone thinks they have their life figured out at that age, but they don't. When you're young, you don't know what path you're going to take in life. It's an exciting time, but it's not right for a parrot. You shouldn't hold back on your own life goals for a bird's sake, nor should your bird be neglected because you got new life goals. It's much better to wait until you are an adult to get a bird. Things change too when you're an adult sometimes, but it's much less likely than when you're young. I am now the proud owner of a green cheek and a cockatiel, but I'm 25, married, and have a stable job. I should have waited until now before I got those other 2 birds from my childhood/college life.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I completely agree, that's why I mentioned that the family has to be on board because if the family is in love with the bird then at least whem the are life changes for the kid, the family can step in as they do with the family dog. If family isn't on board and it's a sole Decision similar to right out of college, then that's a very difficult situation to be in, you're absolutely right!

For me I love the challenge of them. Once you've won your birds love and trust and get them to learn new things, its really rewarding. Dogs and cats are kind of boring for me. I also like how they can be found in the wild and aren't genetically modified, it sort of brings the vibe of where they are from to your house.

I've always loved birds so much. And actually always wanted an African grey or blue and gold macaw. After many years I actually realised through research that those parrots are not for me or my lifestyle. I live in an apartment and already have dog and cats. After so much research I ended up getting a green cheek conure. I am SO happy I choose this bird. Also that I waited for the right bird. I had met so many babies and did not feel the instant connection I felt with this boy. He's perfect for me. He's quiet unless he wants something. And he loves to shower with me. I get him a new toy and rearrange his cage each month. My only problem is he isn't afraid of the cats. He comes down to the floor and goes towards them . Lol luckily they are afraid of him since he bit one on the nose haha. Always remove him as soon as he's down. His favorite is sweet potatoes and grapes. But he eats a variety of other stuff too. :) Love my pip. Best pet I've ever owned. So much more intelligent and bonded fhan my cats or dog.

Omg love this video! I believe after watching this that a parrot for me in the near future, would be PERFECT! I’ve been a dog trainer for 5 years, working with VERY difficult dogs, and going in training DOGS with this same mindset, I also am going to be expanding my knowledge of what I know about dogs, to learning about other animals, and I’m very excited about it! I will be training not only dogs, but cats, birds, pigs, and possibly other exotics as well! I’ve been studying up on training other animals for a long time as well now, so thanks for this video! This was super super informative and shows that I fall into the rare catagory of being a responsible bird owner in the future 😃

Parrots are NOTHING like dogs! Dogs are predators, and parrots are prey animals. Birds are a completely different animal training-wise than dogs. Parrots bite, but if you train them the same way as a dog that bites, you will lose the parrot's trust, as they do NOT understand punishment as dogs are biting due to fear or dominance, mostly dominance if they are treated the right way. Dominance doesn't work with birds, their social hierarchies are completely different than dogs or wolves who are actually very dominant and aggressive with each other.

Parrot tip Tuesday!!! What is beautiful about birds is that they keep changing and surprise you day by day with new things. I worked very hard for my budgie to love me. It was not hand tamed or handfed, so it was quite the adventure to get him to not fear me and specially to come to love me. After several months he started wanting to play with me and toys and after two years he started to play with my hands which is the thing he feared the most, hands. And he keeps changing and showing new colors and that’s honestly thrilling. But yes, he’s probably the living being I’ve put more effort in my life in making he love me back lol

Loving this video, definitely things to think about. We recently adopted a green cheek conure, he was stuck in a tiny cage, where his previous owner smoked, he was rarely allowed out of the cage and is still definitely wary of humans as a whole. The previous owner used to feed him a spicy chicken kebab as a “treat” he’s been with us just over a week now, he has fresh fruit at hand whenever he feels like it, he eats an amazingly balanced diet now, his eyes have gotten so much brighter, he even climbs on my shoulder! He may still be wary, but I’m willing to give my all to make sure he lives a long, happy and healthy life.

I am a cat person in much the way you are a bird person. I adore birds. Love love love them. I wish I had a friend who had them because I have no business owning them. Why? Because cats are fine. I understand them, how they think, act, etc. I had dogs as a kid and it was just too much for me. They need to be trained, groomed, bathed, given lots of attention, walked..ugh. I had a fish once. Nope. Nope. Nope. Cleaning the aquarium.. No. Had a hermit crab. Nope. Nope. Nope. Had a two year old kid for a year, and while I was attentive and a good parent to a toddler, I would be so miserable having one forever, adore kids once they reach ten though. Anyway, I want a bird. My mom loves birds- she grew up with them. I didn't really grow up with birds but I've had my share of being around them because almost every Christmas, my mom would get a lot of Budgies. She explained that she had a parrot that spoke Palauan(her native language).

My father is going to start an aviary next year and I've been studying about all the birds he wants to put in there for 2 years, he doesn't know much about them and just likes to watch the birds (I didn't even have to convince him to make a big aviary, the first thing he did was show me the plan of an incredibly suitable aviary) so I'm responsible for taking care of them, which doesn't bother me as I volunteered to do it myself lol. I learned so much about birds, there are so many things I didn't know and every time I look more, more subjects come up that I hadn't even heard of! Your channel helps me a lot to learn more about birds, thank you so much I'm really excited to get in contact with birds again because my dog is really grumpy, like a lot, she has that whole personality of old people who don't want you to step on their grass. Even though I love her and sometimes she lets me cuddle and hold her, I miss how "jealous" the birds are lol

I have anxiety and autism. I decided I wanted a bird, and after a month of research, decided on budgies because they're not super loud. Their noises are actually very soothing to me, and my anxiety has helped me understand the viewpoint of a tiny prey bird.

I love how different every individual bird is. My first bird was a cockatiel. He's now 11. He isn't very friendly, most you're gonna get out of him is him sitting on your finger for a few minutes. He sings all. Flipping. Day. I also just recently got a ~4 month old sun conure. She wants to cuddle one minute, the next she's crawling through your hair, chewing on your ears and fingers. The only time she screams is when I leave the room, enter the room, and bring her food. Honestly? She's quieter than my cockatiel. I sit in the car for 4 hours every other weekend to go to my father's and I bring my conure every time (she handles the car much better than my cockatiel). I am the sole provider for my birds; I make breakfast every morning, I spend my entire day with them, I eat snacks with them... I'm doing school from home so it's very easy to give them the outside time and attention they need. Even before covid, I didn't go anywhere besides school. I'm 14 and my entire family absolutely loves birds, so if I had to leave to a dorm for college, I'd have someone for my babies to go to without needing to rehome them. I don't want children in the future, besides maybe fostering an older child. I don't plan on getting another bird until I'm out of college, and then I want to rescue. No specific species, just a bird I can live out my entire life with, and hopefully be done there. Yes, I got my cockatiel way too early. After 6 months of undoing 10 years of crappy diet, he's 100% off seed. He lives in an indoor aviary in the living room with plenty of enrinchment. Every morning we have to open the window for him to look out and talk to the black birds.

“I used to own a (small beginner bird) when I was kid!” that statement REALLY bothers me because it gives me the message that they think that’s all it takes for them to have enough knowledge, experience, and preparation to instantly jump into a more advanced birds! I used to volunteer in a pet store and a lot of people use that reason to try to adopt our parrots like our conures, cockatoos, and our rescue macaw. 😬

Thank you Marlene for this very important video. It's your very best video so far. Education helps to save birds' lives and prevent the suffering that often occurs when parrots are wrongly brought into wrong homes.
