Thanks for the video. I disagree with a number of issues, but great you are keeping the issue of presentation in the conversation. In relation to the jacket without the tie with a pocket square, I think you'd look far more put together with a neck tie. Just my opinion, keep up the great work.

Historically speaking, it is true. From the late 15th century to the end of the 18th century, men would wear swords as a mark of distinction, social status and self-defense. As small portable firearms became more refined, the sword gradually stopped being worm as a tool for defense.

Walk closest to the street in order to shield from debris, the occasional splash and (from personal experience) to give you optimal positioning to move your company to safety should a car decide that the sidewalk is also their domain.

Etiquette consultant here! The elbows rule actually comes from the British navy. The British desperately needed sailors in their navy and if you had your elbows on the table at the pub, it meant you had experience on a ship eating to not let your food slide around. You would get knocked out with a 2x4, then wake up on a boat on the way to Shanghai. They’d say, “Welcome to the British Navy”. Also, if you’re French, elbows are perfectly admissible on the table.

You made the right choice. I'm in fashion and I can tell you that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. The company can have a casual dress code or smart casual for employees, but it doesn't apply to an interview. Dressing in a suit shows professionalism and respect, which the others obviously didn't. If I were the interviewer, you'll be on top my list already.

I hate those types of vague descriptions of dress requirement. It's comes off as if HR or the person who came up with the preferred interview standard tried to be smarter than they were. I prefer just stating what you require: jacket/no jacket, button down shirt with a collar/no tee shirts, tie/no tie, dress slacks/no jeans/no khaki a.k.a no cotton slacks, dress shoes/no sneakers. For one job interview the HR rep actually stated "please don't show up wearing western boots". I wore my pair of semi brouges chukkas just to push the limits. The interview went great, but did not get the job.

True, for instance in Romania from what I've seen, people are kinda touchy, whereas in France, people feel a bit offended if you get too close to them. There's a book about sign language where they describe how the comfort zone depends of the country you live in, so that's something to take into consideration for this rule probably.

I've always tended to try to keep a woman on my right, due to being left handed. I still walk closer to the street on side walks, to keep her from being splashed, and it also helps with safety issues. I also hold the door oped for everyone if there is someone coming up immediately behind me. A very good list I will start paying attention to.

With the sword quip, the opposite is actually legitimate if you carry a firearm, as she may be in your way if you carry on your right hip. It also keeps your non-dominant hand in a better position to manipulate her out of harms way if drawing with one hand. Reverse accordingly if you are a lefty, or use a shoulder-holster.

Some "detail opinions" from a European perspective. I'm Dutch, and lived and/or worked in several European countries with "professional exposure" to the US, Canada and Asia. There are cultural differences between all these regions. Elbows on the table are a big no-no, as it usually go's hand-in-hand with other bad table manners. Keep your forearms rested on the table if you have to, but keep the elbows off the table. Shirts not tucked is juvenile, and kills your adult status in the office. Don't do this! Leather does not need to match on every account as stated in the video. But black shoes with brown belts or vice-versa looks shabby. As many men wear what their spouses are preparing for them, it indirectly insults your wife if you do not take note of this!

jamepearson Yes, absolutely. If you must be on the phone for any reason, hold it with your non dominant hand. I’ve seen so many different types of uniformed personnel, wether it’s LEO’s or armed security guards at different events & they’ll be on the cell phone with their dominant hand leaving their duty weapon in the gun belt holster completely exposed & up for grabs by a person with ill intent. Common sense & experience in the real world should have these guys hold the damn phone with the off hand that way you are able to react to a situation if need be & you always have your arm at your side by the holstered weapon to prevent someone from trying to grab it. Not that it will happen but it has been documented to occur & the outcome is never good. Good Day to You!

I've seen a couple other reasons for why elbows on the table is considered rude. Apparently sailors used to use their elbows to steady their tables out at sea to make sure their plates didnt move around, and apparently got so used to the practice that they did it even on dry land in pubs etc. According to this account, sailors dont have the best image of cleanliness or being friendly so it was considered rude to do what the rude sailors do. A second reason ive seen is that when English kings would invite viking invaders in to try and settle disputes and create treaties, they would provide a feast to get on their good side, and what the vikings would do, if there was room, was to put their elbows on the table to symbolize "You are poor, and cant even provide a full table worth of food for your guests", and so it became extremely insulting to the host, as to say they are too poor to provide for the situation.

I make a conscious decision to do that with my daughter because nonces do exist but luckily I live in England and not Brazil so it’s unlikely my bird’s going to get kidnapped... plus I’d be greatful to someone for duct taping her mouth tbh.

I was taught different rules. You could put your elbows on the table after you are done eating, but not during eating, because while eating your elbows go to the side so you can reach the food and then you take a lot of space. You could wear hat indoors if it a public space like a shop or something. But not when you enter someone's house.

The elbows on the table rule may have originated with a weak table top in mind, but now we know that keeping your elbows off your table is very important for your posture. And we also discovered that the most important time to keep a right posture, is during a meal. Your posture during your meal has influences on your swallowing pattern, which has influence on the growth of your face. Yes, it's all connected!
