    Collin thank you so much for this video. I asked my surgeon when to begin exercising and strength training and what exercises would be most beneficial and didn't receive much guidance at all. I'm 5 weeks post total colectomy and ileostomy surgery and still having muscular pain but think it is from inactivity as well. This has been difficult to balance activity and rest and knowing which is most beneficial for each situation. I'm looking forward to rebuilding my strength and am much more confident I will do it safely after watching this video. Thank you for providing comprehensive and informative content from a patient's perspective.

    These actually work the same but yet different after reversal if you are lucky enough to have that as an option... and sorry to those who aren't ❤ my deepest love to you... but these exercises are very good and important for both ostomy and reversal... just to safely rebuild your core well as it has been sliced n diced like a tomato... good luck to all of you .... ❤❤❤❤❤

    Collin, thank you so very much for putting this out. I'm 5 weeks out from emergency surgery (happened while we were far away from home on vacation) and trying to rehab as best I can while waiting to get in to see a doctor for follow up. I was running 35 MPW when it happened and am up to walking about 20 MPW now at a decent clip. I'd love to be running again now/soon but my core definitely needs focus. Some of the exercises (glute bridge) are just fine while I can barely attempt some of the others (dead bug, superman). In just a few days I am noticing a difference though. And I love my Stealth Belt, about to order another one.

    So glad to hear the recovery process is coming along well for you! Don't push it too hard with the exercises that you cant do yet, there are likely modifications you can do in their place to build strength in the meantime. The biggest component of any training, whether it's for serious competition or rebuilding after surgery is consistency (as opposed to intensity), so just keep doing a little bit each day and it will compound over time and in a few months you'll be doing these exercises like its nothing!

    I've never done that personally! Usually I keep the bag on or take the whole setup off! Do you find benefit to doing it that way?

    Hi Collin. I have watched many of your videos and appreciate the information. I have a Ostomy Bag, 3 surgeries within a 7 day period for stage 4 colon cancer February 2023. I'm having a hard time getting use to the bag, Coloplast still. I walk anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, lifting lite weights, gentle stretching but can't seem to get use to this and doing myself an injustice. Can you offer any advice to the mental challenge? Thank you for your time.

    I wonder after one year what happened. I am 90 days in and have a similar situation. I remember after 5 weeks in the ICU and 4 surgeries. I can verify I would have preferred to live. Wish granted. Im very active so I have continued all activity at reduced intensity to rebuild myself. My stoma site hurts alot (BAD placement) hard to seal. I feel like I am in the 9th inning of a ball game.. Can I buy you a coffee? Joke..but sincere. I hope you worked it out :)

    Hey Colin! I just wanted to say thank you for releasing this video. I’ve had many abdominal surgeries due to my UC over the past several years. Had APR and stoma revision so I’m officially done with all major surgeries( hopefully) I’m currently 8 weeks out from my stoma revision surgery and had a mucocutaneous separation it’s almost closed. I was considering starting some of these exercises. I’ll be honest I am hesitant and it’s been 4 years since I’ve done any major physical activity but I want to start at some point and regain my core muscles. I was wondering if you had any advice for me on how to approach my goal to getting back into physical activity and core rebuilding.

    How long did I have to wait After the surgery, in perder to start to straight my body?

    There’s no magic amount of time, but usually about 3-5 weeks. stick to just walking and doing whatever is comfortable for a while. Talk to a physical therapist if you can, they can help you better asses your situation and help you decide when the best time to start really working on things like this would be.

    So I'm 6 weeks post and i have a question being I'm on almost no social media is there a non facebook or other venue to ask people directly about this experience we are living? And also i notice that my abdomen sags on the side of my stoma sight lower than my non stoma side IE right side lower bulge by maybe 2 inches tops but noticeable will muscle toning fix this or is it something from the surgery? Thanks for the content i love the stealth belt have a horizontal & vertical one

    I'm just over a year post Colostomy surgery and I'm paralyzed from the waist down from Spina Bifida. Do you happen to have any tips to work my stomach muscles to rebuild strength?

    I got my surgery done about 2 weeks ago. I used to be extremely fit and working out everyday. When can I start doing these exercises to start back strengthening my core? And how long should I keep doing these?

    good questions! First thing to keep in mind is that I'm not a doctor - so take all of my advice with that in mind. My opinion is that you should focus mainly on walking as much as you can for the first month post-op, and then you can gradually start adding these in after about 4 weeks (again, check with your doctor to get cleared for it). Make sure you dont work through pain - listen to your body. I continue to do variations of these exercises a few times each week! But after the first few months post-op, you'll be able to start working in your old exercises and more intense core activities that may replace these ones. Just remember that you will always have scar tissue in your abdomen, and therefore always have a higher risk for a hernia. Your best bet is to be as cautious as possible and always maintain as strong of a core as you can manage

    @@collinjarvis6251 awesome thank you so much. I used to be a calisthenics athlete doing lots of leg lifts and toes to bar and muscle ups. So I need my core strong again. Not sure if I'll be able to those things again because of the risk of hernia. Things like L sits or front levers. I guess I'll stick to compound exercises. But will I be able to leg lifts or crunches?

    @@umeshbajoon6619 I think you may be surprised.. I do hanging core and rock climb quite a bit. Not quite calisthenics but I feel like with a cautious approach (and not too many extenuating health circumstances) you could get back to most movements you did before. Best thing for now is to work on the fundamentals and stay safe.. something like 70% of parastomal hernias form within the first 6 months

    Hi Colin, I have had surgery in 2020 but unfortunately have developed a small parastomal hernia on the right side of my ileostomy and feel when I caugh, sneeze or blow my nose part of my intestine pop through. After having had the flu last week it became a little worse and am no longer able to cough, sneeze or blow my nose without putting a lot of pressure with my hands on it. I am not willing to undergo further procedures to put mesh or something and hope to maintain the defect as it is right now and not make it worse. I'm otherwise a healthe 38yo male, slightly overweight (maybe 10 pounds over) but my belly muscles have basically completely gone over the last three years due to being afraid of doing any excersice... would it be an issue to do these excersices with a small hernia (barely noticeably visually)

    Is there a standing exercise that can be done for people who may have had the complete removal of colon and anus? I still have a few months to have that area completely sealed but in the meantime would love to be able to build strength safely.

    Great question! We'll have to do a standing series to add onto this one. In the meantime, a good core exercise while standing would be to balance on one foot, and slowly lift the other leg up to 90 degrees (high knee position) and back down, switching legs every 10-20 reps to start. Think of it like a standing "dead bug" which is a movement covered in this video. The most important part of that exercise (and all core exercises) is to stay controlled and focused on engaging the target areas. Quality of movement is ALWAYS better than volume of movement. Just be sure to check with your physician first! :)

    You should be bracing your abdomen, which may have a slight appearance of pushing your stomach out, but it shouldn't be too noticeable. Over time core exercises will make you strong and eventually lead to a flatter stomach as well - but don't forget the importance of having a good diet as well!

    Thank you, i eat as healthy as i can. I think when i did crunches i had push my stomach out .i never had a stomach before the ileostomy. I will try your core exercises. Thank you for making the videos
