Ойын-сауық

Learning guitar? Guitar Tricks has over 11,000 online video lessons. Get a 14 day trial here: www.guitartricks.com/?a_aid=5... There are albums everywhere. So much music that a plethora of bands aren't just underrated, they're not even rated. But even with this being true there are a ton of metal releases that get talked about a lot more than others, and still more encounter this situation, when an album doesn't fit the hype, or is simply talked to death. Overrated doesn't always mean bad, it mostly means people never shut up about it. Here are 10 such cases, and, realistically, none of this albums are actually bad albums, but they are the true definition of OVERRATED.

I guess I was unaware of Pantera's success with Far Beyond Driven. I knew it sold well, but I didn't realize it reached #1 until now. I don't hear it talked about nearly as much as Vulgar Display of Power or Cowboys From Hell. So this was somewhat surprising for me. I definitely agree with everything else on the list. I think as an honorable mention, The Number of The Beast is the 11th most overrated metal album. I believe it was Maiden's best seller. It is really good, but I think most, if not the rest of the albums they made in the 1980s were better than that one.

Yea obviously that helps as anticipation comes from the quality of the previous album. That being said, the next two Pantera albums still debuted at #4. Considering how heavy FBD & TGSTK are that shows their success was warranted as people stayed with them even after they established themselves as much heavier than Vulgar

Mikael himself said that BP was basically Still Life but with Steven Wilson, saying they were very similar. To me though, there are only a few simillarities between them. The only song that makes BP remind me of SL is Blackwater Park, the title track itself because of its intro riff. In my opinion, yes, BP is better that SL but they are both fantastic. SL is a great concept album, one of the best I've listen to, but BP will always have a very different vibe and atmosphere. I love them both :D

Judas Priest is my favorite metal band, but if you look at some of the albums that preceded Steel (Stained Class, Sin After Sin) and succeeded that album too (Screaming for Vengeance, Painkiller) I don't think British Steel really holds up, although it definitely has its highlights.

@Anthony Showalter: I agree with you completely. Priest has been my favorite band since the late 70's and I always thought British Steel was one of their weakest albums. However, like you said, it does have its highlights: Rapid Fire, Metal Gods and United are 3 all-time great songs. @iamjefferson: Point of Entry has the distinction of having both my favorite song by any band (Desert Plains) and my least favorite Priest song (Solar Angels) on it.

Back when I would hear it being mentioned with Master of Puppets (personally give me Justice) and Rust In Peace which made me think big songs with time changes and yea that's nothing at all that's there. I have tried a few times to listen to it but it just doesn't seem to click with me. 100 meter dash to the conclusion of its 28 minutes runtime is how I sum it up, and that line (I think it was either Cliff Burton or James Hetfield who said it) about you can only be the fastest guy around for so long also comes to mind. Angel of Death and Raining Blood, that is all.

This list has many good points. "Reign in Blood" is the best-known album by Slayer but the later albums "South of Heaven" and "Seasons in the Abyss" had more beauty (with melodies) than "Reign in Blood". They just wanted to prove they could play faster than anyone else. "Show No Mercy" and "Hell Awaits" were very good albums too and had many great ideas but still the big audience haven't heard about those albums. Some of the songs of "British Steel" were made just for the radio. Although "radio-friendly" isn't equal to "poor" even in metal genre, you cannot avoid hearing how songs like "United", "Breaking the Law", and especially "Living After Midnight" sound a little bit too "poppy". In my opinion Judas Pries has many better albums: "Sad Wings of Destiny" and "Sin After Sin" for example.

They seemed to throw songwriting away just for the sake of playing fast. -Seventh Son of a Seventh Son_... Doesn't seem as atmospheric as _Somewhere in Time_ nor as ballsy as _Powerslave_. What's the concept about, anyways? -_The Legacy_. Most songs sound the same, yet they say it's their best album. -_Master of Puppets_. It's based off the _Ride the Lightning formula_, and strangely no one complains about the song length unlike with _...And Justice for All_. -_Rust in Peace_. Treated like the only Megadeth album that is good and some dislike their later stuff because they never put out a "_Rust in Peace II_". -_Sad Wings of Destiny_. Not sure about this one, everyone loves it but I don't get it.

Honestly, Hell Awaits is in my mind a far better record than Reign in Blood. It has more interesting riffs, better solos (through that's never saying much considering slayer and their typical solos), better atmosphere and overall a better concept.

+ARTalive01 I agree, Reign In Blood is like a compressed version of Hell Awaits. It's kinda like Slayer's version of ...and Justice for All; harder to get into because of lacking production and longer songs, but once you do, you like it just as much as Master Of Puppets, maybe even more. I also like to draw the comparison between Reign in Blood, South Of Heaven & Seasons in the Abyss to Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning & Master of Puppets, as the three albums everyone listens to.

  • @ARTalive01

BirdsElopeWithTheSun You pretty much got that spot on. Again, hell awaits is just more interesting as an album to me. I honestly prefer And just for all, the compositions are more interesting but I would be damned if Master of Puppets wasn't a brilliant record. Another personal favorite of mine is the record Hammerheart by Bathory. However, its quite the opposite from the reason I like Hell Awaits, its more the atmosphere and overall way that the instruments are used. Anyhow, glad to see someone who agrees with me on Hell Awaits.

I am so happy to hear someone else name Show No Mercy as their favourite Slayer album. Such an underrated album. I consider Black Magic to be Slayer's signature song instead of Raining Blood. You are spot on about Raining Blood and Angel of Death being the main draw of the Reign in Blood album. South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss are way better and more solid albums all round. Show no Mercy will always be my favourite of theirs - Crionics is probably their most underrated song for me, along with Behind the Crooked Cross from the South of Heaven album.Love your videos, man. Been watching for a long time. You seem like such a normal, down to earth guy who really loves, appreciates and understands music. It's so hard to find people who can genuinely critique their favourite music like you do, without doing it just to bash other bands and being an 'elitist'.Metallica, Megadeth and Machine Head are three of my favourite bands, but that doesn't mean that I can't find fault with their respective works. I enjoy the variety that those bands have in their discography. Love that you mentioned Rust in Peace as a possible underrated album. Gotta agree with that. It's easily one of the top 10 metal albums of all time.Keep up the good work, CKN. \m/

When I first bought RIB in junior high it was the fastest, craziest, most extreme music I had ever heard. It was my favorite Slayer album for years. Still love it, but now that I'm a little older I think that Seasons and South are more complete albums. I'm a drummer and really appreciate Dave's technical skill on those albums. Much more variety in the way of dynamics and tempo. Still I don't think I would go as far to call RIB overrated. It's gets a lot of hype for sure, but its all subjective to taste and preference. It was for sure a major breakthrough in sound and production from their previous album Hell Awaits.

I even found albums like Divine Intervention, God Hates us All and World Painted Blood more enjoyable than Repentless. Stand out tracks for me are the title track, Piano Wire and maybe Implode, but apart from that it's simply not very memorable.

That's only in my opinion. I like Metallica but not all of their albums though. I know that I always respect Metallica because they gave us something special during the 80s.

It doesn’t. That’s just how people use the word. It means something doesn’t deserve the hype it gets. This applies to things in media that people treat like it is the second coming of Christ, but doesn’t really do anything to change the game. Like if an entire album is praised because of 2 really good songs, but the other 7-9 tracks overlooked because they are kinda ass, it’s safe to say the album is overrated.

Alright I may be wrong that all albums people consider to be overrated are not all bad. But to me when I find an album overrated it mostly means I don’t like it and rarely listen to it. If there’s an album I like that gets a ton of praise but I don’t think it’s as good as what I think is the best, I still don’t consider it overrated because I still like it

Slayer's Reign in Blood is not overrated. It's arguably the greatest thrash album of all time. I don't know if it's Slayer's best record though. South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss and Divine Intervention are all strong releases. Pantera's best record is also its most underrated, The Great Southern Trendkill.

It's incredibly overrated. Nearly every aspect of thrash fandom recognizes Reign in Blood as the quintessential album, when there are TONS of thrash albums I would much rather sit through. Reign is great thrash, but 29 minutes of just being fast makes it seem underachieved; yet nobody seems to care.

Blackwater Park - totally agree. I heard it hyped to high heavens, tried listening to it several times, but just couldn't get into it (and by extention, to Opeth in general). In the end it was the trio of Damnation, Morningrise, and Ghost Reveries that got me starting to 'get' Opeth. Blackwater's not a bad album by any means, I guess, but one that's still nowhere near my personal favorites in what comes to Opeth's discography. Time I - yup, agree. Again, not bad by any means, but more of a victim of the hype and the fact that the album sure took it's time (pun intended) to get done. Sure, there might be a gazillion of orchestration tracks going on in each song, but do they *really* matter in the end? I kind of doubt it.... But when you're a perfectionist, nothing less than your own personal vision will do, I suppose. I really hope Jari would get (or get assigned) a producer to watch over the whole process and put a foot down whenever needed and tell him when something's good enough and move over to the next thing. Reign In Blood - kind of disagree. Best Slayer album ever? Perhaps not. But then again, is it one where you ever feel the need to skip a single track? Or one where you ever get the feeling it could move along a bit swifter? I'd say the starting and closing tracks standing out the most and the rest not getting much mentions isn't so much due to them being bad, but rather "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood" being so damn good, and the whole album moving at such a breakneck speed that it kind of all blends into one glorious, blurry continuum of 28 minutes and 58 seconds.

Okay, I may have missed your point. Were you talking Maiden? If so... I love Maiden's Brave New World, Dance of Death, and A Matter of Life and Death albums. The Reincarnation of B. Breeg is, to me, their best song ever. It has that "Harris lope" I love. And the song fucking pounds. Way back, I ain't much fan, but Remember Tomorrow is an ultra cool song. Song like The Iron Maiden are too simple. To me, not to you. Run to the Hills, that stuff isn't for me. I've seen them 3 times. One thing is certain--they hammer it out for two ours. Screaming for Vengeance is overrated even more I think. It has amazing songs true, but it also has really forgettable songs like pain and pleasure and take these chains. The best Priest albums for me are Painkiller, Defenders of the Faith and Stained Class in no particular order. And to me there is only one truly bad Priest album and that is Ram it Down. Yeah the title track and Blood Red Skies is awesome but my god it is sub-par compared to other priest albums. Turbo isn't earth shatteringly great but it's very listenable poppy 80s metal and Out in the Cold is actually a great song I think

Far Beyond Driven is a good album. But, honestly, I find Machine Head's Burn My Eyes, which came roughly around the same time, a much stronger record and more unique record in terms of atmosphere, songwriting, and lyrics. Many Pantera songs feel a bit playful in nature due to their southern rock and blues influences. Machine Head completely abounded blues-based patterns in their songwriting, thus it made their first album sound much more modern and dark in nature.

Yeah Blackwater Park does seem to be revered as the best Opeth album (maybe as it 'launched' them to a wider audience) - yet for me it is outshone by its predecessors (and I think Ghost Reveries is perhaps better too). I actually think with the In Flames choice Soundtrack to your Escape is a tad underrated! Come Clarity is the slight overrated one for me - even though I still quite like it, it is where everyone's attention is centered constantly.

actually 25 years has one of their best breakdown kind of of all time; have you ever listened it to the end once? Good friends its a joke anyways and hard lines has a very nice solo. This album is the grooviest and the heaviest so thats why its #1 in my charts, followed closely by cowboys and vulgar. I don't dig that much trendkill but its good, and if anything, reinventing the steel is underrated because it has a shit production. I'll cast a shadow, yesterday don't mean shit, it makes them disappear, and rev is my name have all very nice and catchy riffs
