10 Most Important Settings for Wildlife Photography

Today I want to show you the settings that you should change immediately before using new camera. Having the factory settings might result in wrongly exposed, blurry, or even missed shots. And especially in wildlife photography we often don’t get a second chance!

Great Fabian, I have one more: White balance: Never leave in Auto, as each photo of a series can look different and it will create a lot of consistency issues in post-processing. So: Always select a mode, or do it manually in each shooting 🙂

Auto WB is fine - I only shoot raw. There are many non obvious benefits of auto WB, eg, showing people images on the camera

For AF I have one button set to switch between one shot/servo and another button set to switch between spot/eye tracking. This gives me great flexibility while keeping it simple. On canon in AF settings, page 4 you can disable AF modes that you dont use. This way when I press the button it only switches between the 2 modes I want to use. For color space do you shoot in srgb or adobe rgb?

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I kept it in sRGB, when shooting RAW it doesn’t really matter anyway

Setting #3 should be number 1, 2 and 3 :) I haven’t lost pictures due to it yet, but I have been out and about with a camera, but no cards. Like batteries, I always keep a spare SD card in my bag nowadays.

How about metering settings on a Canon body? Do you recommend spot metering? I seem to recollect that Nikon spot metering is based on selected AF point and Canon spot metering is based on center AF point. I am particularly concerned with wildlife in the bushes where I seem to constantly underexpose the subject.

I would work either in manual mode or evaluative metering with exposure compensation

I believe the thought behind the default allowing shooting without a card is that it allows customers in a store to put the camera up to their eye and go 'click, click, click' and decide to buy the camera. Yes it is stupid but the camera sellers don't want to have to explain to complete newbies what the camera won't work. On the other hand, Canon defaults to not working if there is no lens on the camera until you change a setting. This is required before you can use a manual focus lens, microscope or other things that Canon does not make.

Yes, this could be. But it’s very annoying. The stores could just set this up, even if it’s not the default setting

Lately found that FV mode is a goto mode. Allows me to adapt very quickly.

I tried it, but still prefer to set everything manually 99% of the time. Then, M is just more convenient for me
