Oh, I'm not saying Luke can't fly. And the force does amplify his natural abilities (remember what Obi-Wan said about Anakin, before the prequels ruined the mythos) but Wedge Antilles. That's all. Wedge. Antilles. And I really think it would have been somewhat of a nice easter egg to have Poe Dameron (who is nowhere near the pilot Wedge Antilles is) be the offspring of Biggs Darklighter or something. If you wanted a backstory for a sequels character, that's where it should have been rooted. A real lost opportunity if you ask me. The Mouse botched Star Wars in ways that even Lucas could never have imagined.

If Thrawn considered Ackbar of all beings to be his chief rival an perhaps only possible superior gotta know he's ALSO keeping a close eye on anyone in command associated with him just in case. As is typical for those of Thrawn's type. It's the only way he could be sure the giant Admiral Shrimp is the ONLY other being at his level. Well, Legends says the force gets used as a sort of precognition in fights, which is why Jedi and Sith are so fast. Imagine playing chess against the world champ when you know what his next move will be for certain; sure, you can do better, but once he knows that you know, he can set traps for that. Same concept here but in flying.

In legends, Wedge turned down several promotions. The only reason he accepted the promotion to general was because he was told his own officers were turning down their promotions because they saw it as a tradition. He was told 'Rogue squadron should be more than a collection of flight officers and lieutenants'. The response he gave after he accepted was basically 'when did you figure out that using my own people against me was the only way to get me to accept a promotion?' As General Antilles, he stayed in the cockpit for a while but eventually became captain of the super star destroyer Lusankya after it was repaired from the damage done to it during the battle for thyferra.

Saw Gerrera. I know that might be controversial given that he is on this competency list, but hear me out. Saw was charismatic, which won people to his cause, but his grasp of strategy was basically just attack the nearest Imperial target regardless of its importance or collateral damage, which ended up costing him troops and social capital. Because of this, people who might have otherwise been sympathetic to the Rebellion saw it as little more than a terrorist organization. He's a great example of how someone can be moderately successful, skillful in combat, but still be incompetent as a strategist or long-term planner.

Lando Calrissian. If it hadn't been for him the Rebel fleet would have been, if not completely wiped out, then at least seriously denuded by the time the shield went down. Plus, he was the first to realise the deflector shield was still up, which saved all but three rebel fighters.

Maybe, but Holdo had good reason to dislike Poe Dameron. In the beginning of the film, he disobeyed orders and led the entirety of the resistance's heavy bomber corps to their death for an objective that was not strategic in any way. In legends, wedge antilles name for a Twi´lek word, describing Star warriors.
The idea of refusing a promotion to stay on the field sounds good and all. But the reality is, there comes a point where you can do a lot more good with your skills higher up then just leading a squad.

Ackbar did not only just lead the rebel fleet. He basically built it. He essentially wrote the fleet doctrine for the rebel alliance, created training programs for the fleet and was the chief architect of the fleets entire organizational structure. While I do love Ackbar, the credit for all of that belongs to Ackbar’s predecessor: Admiral Raddus. Raddus was the leader of the Alliance Navy and established the core of alliance naval doctrine from their early beginnings. Ackbar replaced Raddus as leader of the Alliance Fleet after Raddus’ death at Scarif, and was responsible for many amazing feats of his own, but the title of “father of the alliance navy” definitely has to go to Raddus.

In the Heir To The Empire novels, Wedge is also very important and you get to know him a bit more than just the few seconds of screen time he has in the movies.
If you take the X-Wing novel series as canon, Admiral Ackbar did eventually talk Wedge Antilles into accepting a promotion to General. In the final book in the series, Wedge's command ship was an Imperial super star destroyer, reflagged in the New Republic fleet. He was also personally responsible for the mission to liberate Corsuscant among others

And to think that Hera did all those things while also being a mother as well. My mother could barely handle me and my siblings so I can't imagine what would happen if my mother was then put in charge of important things going on in a rebellion while she was also rising kids

Can’t forget about wedges command of the lusankia in legends during the dark empire event
20:11 IS it actually cannibalism if you are eating a DIFFERENT intelligent species, or do we really need a new word for it before we meet the galaxy?
i would love a tv series about wedge antilles rough and wraith squadron would be great matieral for a starfighter/commando based series
Hera is the one of the best generals of the rebellion, and I would always be loyal if I’m with her squad.

Ok gimli
Well I would add few more there, for example Ezra was promoted to General. He was instrumental for destroying Trawn's fleet and outsmarted him, even though we all know how capable Trawn was and if Bridger didn't defeat him and pulled him out in the unknown regions, I don't think that Rebel alliance would even exist when death star was destroyed - basically if Ezra didn't do what he did, we all know what came after but if he didn't saved Rebel alliance at Lothal + TIE defenders would change everything I can bet that rarely anyone thinks about that. Just imagine if imperials managed to mass produce TIE Defenders what would happen? TIE with shields, hyperdrive and superb weapons and maneuver capabilities, that move only saved a lot and made empire vulnerable.
Always to me, Hera is a great general and the best mom for two adoptive kids and one biological kid in a wonderful reality especially as she was trying to keep all of her soldiers and kids alive and well through the hard times of the galactic war! May we thank characters like her being invented to look up to!
