I really want to try out Akadama on my next project. I watched a video of a guy in Germany and he had it in for 8 years and thought 'that's the one for me!' Used a tiny layer of it with Buce and moss, looked lovely and very active caridina. I've used fluval stratum purely as a substrate layer for plants and you still have to plug it with root tabs even then. Tropica soil has done well for me though when it should essentially be the same stuff.

I had something similar happen with my 75 gallon, I had nothing but fluval stratum in the bottom and plants. I ran through approximately 70-100 shrimp before I added a sand cap to the stratum. Once I added about 13mm-25mm of sand, the shrimp population started coming back, I am now up around 900+ shrimp and they are breeding a ton. I now only use sand as substrate with trumpet snails to mix the sand.

Hi Mark hope all is well. I am wondering what the pH was at 10 months for the fluval. Maybe some plants dont thrive at a low pH, the algae growing on the sponge indicates enough nutrients in the water. I know that generally when plants dont do well in a tank the shrimp suffer due to bad bacteria and lower biofilm levels. However the real test to confirm if the soil stopped working is the pH.

I realize they are caused by over feeding.I have done some research on how to get rid of them. My research says to vacuum the gravel (not really possible with baby shrimps). Also to treat the tank with 'PANACUR C' (a canine dewormer)to kill them. I've since cut my feeding down "Dramastically! lol) My Question to u is; Should I treat the tank, or let it run its course?
