    One of the major misconceptions I had about MMA was that people aren't humble. I was surprised to see people in the gym I joined to be so kind and thoughtful when it came to practice. It made me feel happy to be amongst people who like martial arts and want to become better fighters. The second misconception is that MMA people hate traditional martial arts. Based on my experience I've found that if it works, then they'll use it. I've received a lot of praise for using unorthodox karate techniques while grappling or free sparring.

    When I worked in my first hotel, we used to have UFC fighters staying with us. The part said about most of the fighters being humble is absolutely true. There with these badass looking guys, tattoos, scars, cauliflower ears yada yada walking around and they were some of the nicest, coolest, most grounded folks you could speak to. Hell, I did room service for Chuck Liddel and he joked about throwing the "cheeky room service guy" over the balcony. I replied with "That's cool, you'll be coming with me, sir!" He laughed, shook my hand and said "I like you man, thanks for breakfast, have a great day!"

    I used to find MMA quite brutal but it's evolved very quickly. I think it's a natural progression in an era of relative peace and stability through most of Europe , the Americas and beyond that has allowed this idea to grow. Because you reach this point where fighters look to properly test themselves under pressure to the most realistic standard that they can even though there is no real reason to fight as such. So you have to do this in the context of a sport. I do still find some MMA guys to have very distasteful conduct but they are in the minority and it is a business as well as you say. Without the business side it's very difficult to put the best fighters in each division together in the cage.

    Thanks for the great video, Oliver! I'm glad that you mentioned Krav Magá and said that it's good for self defense. Most MMA and BJJ fighters that I've met they speak ill of Krav Magá or Kombato or other self defense methods, saying that they're not realistic. They even don't value traditional martial arts. But I've met some people who train seriously in systems like Krav Magá and they could literally kill another person with their thumbs if they needed to. They even study the psychological aspect of an armed attack (an attack by someone using firearms) to know if it is possible to react and when it would be the best moment to react.

    I think the way the sport MMA is promoted, especially in the US, that it may create misconceptions very easily, many viewers aren't able to either fully understand or are fully informed about the rules, the different fighting style's, the biomechanics behind for instance a ground punch, etc. They watch it just for pure entertainment and are exposed to all the pre fight rumble, and they take it as the truth. Many of the pre fight meetings and weigh in of the heavy hitters both in boxing and MMA are scripted, in UFC, thanks to Dana White, an expert in pre fight marketing to generate more income for both UFC and the best MMA fighters. So my point is, one thing is to watch MMA as a sport and another thing is to watch it as pure entertainment as many people all around the world. Nothing wrong with either of them, but it is easier for misconceptions to surface when you watch something you don't understand but you like it as entertainment. Please let me know if I am totally lost and on the wrong track.

    I guess another misconception is: when you train MMA, you can learn fighting quickly and you don't have to put in years like e.g. in Karate. I haven't trained MMA yet, but I'm sure it takes a lot more than a few weeks to master it.

  • @avationmusic

    @avationmusic

    4 жыл бұрын

    this is true though. I've been doing karate for a decade now. I'm quite decent but nowhere even close to "mastering" it. I've been doing MMA on the side for 2 years and it made be an exponentially better fighter. How I like to see it is in the long run, Karate is better but has a really slow start. MMA can be learned quickly but won't let you achieve the level of skill a Karate practitioner could - obviously depending on the style and person. It's exponential vs linear growth.

    @@avationmusic by the way, it's not like you "mastered" mma, infact mma is way harder to master than karate, because you basically can't master mma, if you want to master mma you have to master karate and another different combat sports, if mma made you a better fighter in real life that basically mean it can develop you faster and with shortcuts, doesn't mean that's as much potential it can get.

  • @avationmusic

    @avationmusic

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@mustafakhalid9348 I agree with you in saying I haven't mastered it and it's really difficult to master, however, I disagree when you say you'd have to master other martial arts to master mma. Although mma stands for mixed martial arts, it's become its own martial art. With bjj, Thai boxing and mauy Thai as a grounding - it's created its own techniques to fill in the gaps, like Oliver said. My goal tho is to learn as many martial arts as possible but karate is my foundation for everything.

  • @mustafakhalid9348

    @mustafakhalid9348

    @@avationmusic btw muay thai means thai boxing, and mma isn't just a mix about those 2 things, for me it is, i choose muay thai and BJJ, but look at khabib and Daniel Cormier, they don't kick legs at all, they wrestle, and connor himself just do some weird taekwando kickboxing mix, and gsp, is the karate lord of mma, in conclusion mma isn't just what you trained, different people have different paths.

    Question about safety in ground and pound: what about the possibility of the fighter on top falling on the other guy's head elbow first or hitting the guy so his head bounces against the floor? I understand that boxers can also technically bang their head even worse than knocked out but to my limited knowledge this does not happen in the ring (obviously people die this way on the street every day). You made a good point about often having poor leverage for strikes on the ground but if your hands and upper body are free for a moment what happens then? It seems that in breaking demonstrations the athletes are usually striking from up down to break the objects they are trying to break, which would seem to indicate that you are at your strongest when hitting downwards as could happen in the cage.

    My conception was MMA was a very rough and brutal sport to TRAIN. But really, its often very soft and technical, and its all about knowledge and wisdom, more than toughness, power and aggression. I still find myself surprised about how much striking training reminds me of a "dancing lesson", believe it or not. Its all about skill, footwork and stuff like that.

    I fully agree with point 7, many people think MMA is good for self-defense but street defense is totally different from cage fight. For point 1, I like to ask why those MMA gyms segregate MMA training into specific training like Muay Thai, Boxing or BJJ if MMA has it's own complete fighting system? Hence you would find yourself wearing Muay Thai or BJJ attire. Give an example, I have a friend who learned MMA for more than a year but spent most of the time doing Muay Thai.

    The thickness of the helmets acts as a longer lever arm allowing a strike to generate more rotational force, which causes the real damage that we worry about. Football helmets do the same thing. Helmets reduce straight-line impact injury and superficial injuries, but those aren't the brain injuries that are killing contact-sport retirees. See the book _Fight Like a Physicist_ for a better explanation.

    The first misconception of MMA everybody can say is based on perspective, and even then it is still a mixture of different arts. You have to practice striking, grappling, etc separately in different classes, and then learn how to mix them.

    Agree with all of them EXCEPT the first one. MMA classes are still broken down by Arts in most gyms. You have your BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing classes still taught separately, from what I have seen in many gyms. You do put them together when you train for an MMA fight but still most places teach them separately enough that you can just do BJJ or Muay Thai there at the gym without doing the rest of the classes. If MMA was just one thing on its own, you can't choose to train like that. That's like doing Muay Thai and only wanting to learn the leg work (kicks, knees) without the hand work (punches, elbows) at all, which would never happen. But that's just my observation and experience. Feel free to disagree. Great channel btw... Train smart and safe.

    Correction - nowadays amateur boxers wear the same equipment as professionals. Helmets were forbidden because of the reasons you've mentioned.
