I just introduced my GF to this show 3 months ago. I had re-watched the whole thing at least twice since it aired and figured once more would be fun. She reluctantly agreed to give the miniseries a try, and by the time the fleet left the ammunition facility, she was addicted. We finished the entire series last week. It's SO dense in terms of moving parts and well-crafted characters that it feels like it moves at a thousand miles an hour. So many shows plod and creep along, but with BSG there's a major plot advancement every episode. I think that's part of why it is so compelling. As an aside, watching it knowing all the "secrets" with someone who has no idea what's about to happen next was a lot of fun. Seeing her reactions to the twists was a real treat.

@@mentalrobb5062 I'm right there with you. The remake ruined it with drama. A good scifi should be how do we outsmart the more advanced enemy and achieve victory against overwhelming odds this week. Not only was there too much drama but not even close to enough victory. Just drama, drama, defeat, drama, defeat more drama and than on top of all of that lets make most of the main cast all sleeper cylon agents so it's all just doom and gloom. The one thought that kept me watching was "This is Battlestar Galactica after all so no matter what happens along the way it has to end with the Galactica finally reaching Earth right?" but no; they even screwed that up by having them find an already devastated post apocalyptic Earth so more doom and gloom. The deepest meaning of the show, to me, lies in one phrase by Gaius, in the last episode : "things men do for love" While the show basic premise is that humanity got wiped out because of a sin (gaius wanting to get laid), it reveals Gaius actually acted out of love. The show then, becomes not about destruction based on sin, but rebirth based on love.

I feel like a lot of the people involved in the whole GINO campaign were going off of their faded memories of the original series, rather than the actual content of the original series. Sure, by today's standards, the show seems pretty light, but for its time, it was dealing with some dark themes that definitely carried over into the new series. A couple of years ago I binged the original series immediately followed by the new series, and it was both shocking and impressive how many ideas Ron Moore carried over, from different models of Cylons, the class warfare within the fleet, "angels," politics vs religion -- it's all there in the original series.

Excellent analysis. I love this show, just rewatched entire series again for the 3rd time. I thought that when it came out in the aftermath of 9/11 and the US 'war on terror' there was a lot of commentary in the show related to all that entailed. Also thought the cast was stellar. The relationship between Adama and Rosland was incredibly well done and extremely touching. But all were excellent. I think one of best series ever made, regardless of genre. However, I tried to watch the original versions of BSG, and just found unwatchable.

If you follow the book of Enoch there's a massive overlap with angels and battlestar gallatica. There's 7 types of angles, cenutrions/basestars/raiders all take on a particular type of angel. And yes biblical angels like the Cherubim look more like robots than people.

This mythology needs to be revisited in a huge way, not in Earth's present or future, but in its past. The set up is perfect, in that the survivors of the 12 Colonies and survivors of the Cylon Civil War unite to settle a prehistoric Earth populated by primitive humans. They've already laid the groundwork for this with the the various real life _human_ religions we know about. More importantly, they could meld the lore and _miracles_ of these real life religions with the knowledge and abilities of these human/Cylon colonists who surely would become god-like to the primitive humans already populating Earth... Sure, it will probably piss of the faithful of current religions as things, such as Moses parting the Red Sea, are given some kind of technological explanation, but for the vast majority of people not offended by such things, it would serve as a deep exploration of Earth's theologies and their lore.
