    The most astounding result was 1998 in my view, because Israel and Malta had the same points before the last vote came in and then Macedonia gave Israel 8 points, so only Israel and Malta had the chance to win. After that Ireland received the 10 points and it was quite obvious who would get the 12 points. But unfortunately Malta didn't get a single point of Macedonia, so Israel won... Even now when I rewatch that scene I'm so full of hope that Chiara would win, although I already know that she wouldn't xD

  • @jamesshunt5123

    @jamesshunt5123

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ornochestror Interesting but that happened in 1988 and it was definitely an even bigger thriller. It was even closer. You see almost *all* countries (all but two) had awarded the United Kingdom some points. Many of them 10 and 12 points. Celine Dion of Switzerland was *behind* the United Kingdom by 5 points *not* the same points like was the case in 1998. Then the final votes came in from Yugoslavia. She was trailing the United Kingdom. Yugoslavia then only awarded Switzerland (Celine Dion) 6 points which barely put her in the lead with a single point when 7, 8, 10 and 12 points still could be given... Since the United Kingdom just needed 2 points to overtake Celine Dion chances seemed high they would either get 7, 8, 10 or 12 points and win. As it were Yugoslavia awarded 7 points to the Netherlands, 8 points to Germany, 10 points to Norway...and then a complete shocker - they gave 12 points to France. France was in the lower midfield and nobody had given France any high points. Yugoslavia giving France their 12 points was totally unexpected but it meant Celine Dion had won by the smallest possible margin. Yugoslavia only placed Switzerland 5th and gave higher points to France, Norway, Germany and The Netherlands. So it seemed as if Celine Dion's 1 point lead was a final tiny bit of brief glory. I checked up 1998. The country Macedonia gave 10 points to wasn't Ireland it was the United Kingdom and it wasn't a shocker since it was one of the favorites that evening and had already received four 12 points and placed 2nd overall. Also Macedonia gave Croatia 12 points (not very surprising) and Croatia was doing well that evening and had two 12 points and four ten points votes. It ended the contest in a strong 5th place. So let's summarize: In 1998: They headed into the final vote with equal points. In 1988: Celine Dion was behind and trailing the United Kingdom by 5 points. In 1998: Macedonia still placed Israel top 3. In 1988: Yugoslavia placed Switzerland (Dion) 5th. In 1998: Macedonia gave United Kingdom their 10 points, a popular song which ended the contest in 2nd place and 12 points to Croatia which in a strong 5th place (already had six 10/12 points votes). In 1988: Yugoslavia gave the Netherlands 7 points (a song that finished 9th that evening), 8th to Germany (finished 11th overall) , Norway 10 points (finished 5th but only had a single 10 point vote by said Yugoslavia) and France (!) 12 points (which catapulted France to 10th overall in the final standings). Nobody expected France to get 12 points from Yugoslavia. But this meant that their 6 points had given Celine Dion the lead by a single point at the finish line. As such Yugoslavia's "We sort of like Switzerland's song but don't like United Kingdom's song at all" won Switzerland the contest by a single point after having been behind by 5 points.

    Let's look at this soberly shall we? The voting system has changed over a handful of times through history. Juries, no juries, just televote, different points, different orders of delivering them... And yeah, the previous system (with occassional adjusments) served us well for some 30 years - what we're missing here is the excitement of the voting process. 2003 and 2011 were the only relatively exciting years as of late. As more countries joined, the bigger the lead a favourite could get. Was it exciting watching Loreen rake in douze points after douze points for well over half an hour? Fine if you wanna be nostalgic about it, but what SVT and EBU is doing is trying to get back the excitement and the nerve. We will still have the douze points, we will still have the spokepersons from each country delivering the vote - but it will take less time and be more exciting! Most of the haters will probably love it, come May, and they've seen the new system in place.

    +gummybears50 Because now, Jury-Voting and Public-Voting are not combined anymore. So every Country gives two times the Classic Points from 1-8 and 10 and 12. But only the Jury-Votes will be announced by a spokesperson. The Public-Voting result will be anncouned, starting with the Country with the fewest Points.

    Sabmis I fully understand how it works. Since the points are effectively doubled a country that would normally win by 100 points e.g. 2012 this gap would be doubled. I just think the new system wasn't needed and it feels like the televotes aren't important.
