Love Love Love These tips! as an event lighting company, thank you for encouraging vendor communication. we're happy to work with the photographer to make sure they get the best shots. also, thank you for showing amazing room shots. you'd be surprised at how many galleries we've seen that have overlooked major lighting Decor elements. I learned a lot from this video so again thank you!

Thanks for the awesome tips. I got my first wedding gig coming this fall and the reception/ball room I was told is all white so I wouldn't need CTO gels and are speedlites in TTL mode powerful enough to reach the center of the room (where the dance floor is) or should I meter the light and use manual mode?

Hi Roy, It all depends on what lens you use. We recommend staying at your widest aperture your lens offers to let in all available light. This is again just preference, you can try it out and see the difference!

Photography In A Click

I gonna have a wedding reception where the room is almost completely dark except a few chandeliers with light purple color and some dj-s room light., other that that there won't be any ambient light. The ceiling is black. What would you guys recommending far is color temp, flash gel and numbers of flash. The room ceiling is about 12 feet high and hold about 120 people. Thank you,

As for the ISO at 3200 comment... Some have said that its too high. I generally shoot at 1600 even though I have 5 x600ex-rt's going off. That's the only way to keep any ambient mood lighting in the hall.

where do you point the flashes. do you bounce or point to the middle.

I use the MAG-Bounce for the on camera flash. that way i am independent of the ceiling for bounce

It's not 1/32 or 1/64 "of a second". It's 1/64th of full power.

I was puzzled for a wile too. it now makes sense

I just shot a runway model show with a Canon 24-70 2.8 most photos came out blurry .now I have to shoot a wedding reception Sunday indoors low light mo tripod people dancing and moving shooting with a 7d and a 24-70 with flash what camera setting do I use to have sharp photos

Agree'd! It was a great video with a lot of good info, and the Snob Photog's are nitpicking the crap out of it. I'm an Amateur photographer that my sister has coerced into shooting her wedding. I am honestly freaking out a bit and SLR lounge has been a godsend. A wealth of knowledge presented in an easy to understand way.

What kind a led lights are using in tip nine? Where can I buy it?

I completely agree. This looks ridiculous. You can see people forcefully behaving "happy" because cameras are everywhere all the time. I'm a solo wedding photographer and I try to be as stealthy as I can and my clients appreciate how I work and what comes out of it. I know when not to take pictures a let the mood go naturally and only step in for pictures at the right time. They want to have a wedding and celebrate it. Not a full day studio shoot. Everyone has their own modus operandi of course. But I think it also depends on the culture somehow. The bigger, the more, the better is a cliché, but it stands for the USA. Cakes as high as the ceiling and 5 photographers taking pictures of you eating it. You impress your guests and family. And at the same time you as photographer impress your client with a team of assistants/photographers. It's the same as using a gigantic light modifier on your on-camera flash. It has little use, but it looks expensive.

That would work if JUST using ambient light - but they are talking about mixing ambient and flash. WB adjustments won't fix it if the original sources are different colours to start with.

Yes they are necessary when you have a mix of ambient and flash light. If the ambient is warm and the flash is cold you'll have a hard time setting a suitable white balance for your subjects.

@@acesofgambit Its not a must. its depends on the style. if you use flash to overpower the ambient you dont need it but if too much ambient gets in the scene or the flash isnt high enough the color tone will be different.

@9:41 As much I like this technique. For people who heavily use their cameras, and happen to be a canon shooter. I think we shoot stop doing the camera twist technique. That's one of the many reasons hot shoe flash mount on my camera have becoming loose because of this. :\ Yeah, you can screw it back on if you're using the older canon cameras where it's easy to screw it back on. BUT! with my current EOS R. you have to take some body parts apart, and screw it from the inside. wtf canon...

A little vague / light on certain information that seems crucial. Such as when they talk about balancing a tungsten environment and using a CTO gel on the flash, they then say "don't forget to set the color temperature in your camera" but do not say anything about what that setting or range might be!

a little vague, but i feel like if you know where to get a cto gel, or have an off camera flash setup, you can probably figure out how to set your white balance. to be fair, using raw or simply correcting in post can overcome quite a bit. once again more information for those who are above the extreme beginner level

You said at 10:07 , the subject will be completely still. What you mean by then? With 1/6 or 1/10 Sutter speed the subject will be everything but still.

I think.. focus on subject. With a slow shutter speed just to capture movement around the area and snap.

@@aerincollins1175 Hey, thanks for replying back. I have tried and the result what I was expected, blur on steroid, image was unusable. Maybe I am expecting something different what it should be but my experience is that when I use slow shutter speed below 1/50--1/40 with still subject, that's starting introducing motion blur even with just a minimal hand sake. Here we talking about 1/6 or 1/8 s.speed with a fast moving people, I just don't get it how the images can be still good. ...

@@zsozsousa1 ohw. I've seen how they did this at a pro level. If you watch b&h photo there's a guy named Jerry. He's is a pro wedding photographer. He do this kind of pics . But what he did is way more advanced that this guy . But I'm not a fan of it. So I never looked it up to learn . But please find that video on ,B&H on KZread. You will find it. It's an hour long video with tons of tips and tricks.

Hey guys, Hey Pye, I love you guys, but when I see such opulent Weddings on your educational videos it makes me think that maybe most of the people that watch your videos may never see such extravagance, so it is hard to relate to. Maybe you guys could "dress it down" sometime?

The LED lights in front of the lens was not a great look. Candles was a better option. You should mention how you going to power the lights in the corner on the room. Depending on the room size would you like to use something like Dynalites with power packs or battery Baja mono lights or you using on camera flashes with AA batteries or you using a power packs with each light. What has worked best for you.

+SLR Lounge | Photography Tutorials I have used the Sanyo Eneloop batteries and found the recycle life to be less and less after each charge and about the 10th charge I was getting 60% of a new Duracell or Kirkland battery. I just went back to buying the Costco Kirkland battery in bulk.. Consumer Reports Magazine gave that battery a Best Buy rating. At .50 cents per pair. Overall they beat any battery in the group of tests.for price and performance. Of course a lithium AA battery is the best battery and will last longer but it cost 5 times the amount. I still think an external power source like a Quantum Turbo bought or switched over to a lithium internal battery is the best power for on camera flashes. I have a strobe repair guy in LA that will convert old packs to a internal lithium battery. I have even used the Photogenic Lithium Battery pack to recycle my Dynalite packs with great success.

I didn't know that flashes could be set to 1/16th or 1/32 of a second. I usually set mine to 1/16. or 1/32 of the flashes power. Only a couple useful tips, really should have proofed the video before it was posted.

You crashed out the video at the end!

From the way they are talking, word choice etc it seems like they are still relatively new to the business and don't have a lot of experience themselves.

ive been shooting for years, and in my experience those who are trained in a classroom are the only ones who use exact word choice. Everyone else is trying to make sense of the settings, abbreviations, and symbols the best they can, especially when the information is so new. That stuff really sticks because its how you've learned it, even if someone corrects you. the whole "of a second" thing is something i hear from seasoned photographers all the time. very good ones. The thing is that people either misspeak (common for people to do when they arent reading directly from a script, as well as repeating the term until theyre corrected by a director) or they've never been corrected in real life. I often dont correct small errors like that because its usually rude, especially when someone is trying to help you and you understand what theyre trying to say.

@leo2502 In every other professional job, saying wrong figures and names about the basics of your knowledge is a complete fail and you end up looking stupid or an amateur. But when you're a photographer you can just throw stuff at it and be completely wrong and it's okay "because everyone is doing it"? Sorry, that's just bull crap. Shutterspeed is NOT the same as incremental power of a strobe. Two completely different worlds. If you say to a photography student : dial it in at 1/64 of a second, he'll most likely change his shutterspeed on his camera and not the power of his flash. If he's smart. Imagine and architect talking about schematics and just switching from feet to miles when talking about the same values.

Well ill reply in reverse order. If an architect switched between feet and miles, thats not out of the ordinary since theyre both measurements of the same system. It would look strange if they switched between meters and feet without the need to translate for the audience. Its not ok because "everyone is doing it." The issue is that the above comment says they dont have a lot of experience. My comment directly addresses the experience of these photographers. Its important to be able to communicate to students using correct terminology not only to make sure the student understands how to improve, but also to avoid that thinking that because "everyone is doing it" its the correct way. What I'm saying is that they sound like they've worked quite a bit as photographers and have valuable experience that we can learn from, but that I've heard experts say weird stuff like "one thirty two of a second." Why? well either they misspoke, or they dont 100% understand how to communicate a fraction verbally. Especially when flash power when its properly pronounced "one thirty second power." They're very similar. You and I know theyre different and one implies shutter speed and the other flash power. Its A LOT like hearing people say they "minused" the seven from ten to get three. No you "SUBTRACT" seven from ten to get three. But that doesnt mean this person isn't skilled or experience (even in mathematics believe it or not.) and honestly, if a beginner photography student is told to dial in his flash at 1/64th of a second, a smart student would ask where that setting is on his flash an even smarter student would ask for clarification. Why? because she or he's actively following along in the lesson and for all they know this pro knows about a setting that he or she doesn't. I teach photography, and if I walked into a classroom and told students "dial it in at 1/64th of a second" I would expect blank faces and raised hands, because they aren't pros and theres no context. If they knew it all they wouldnt be in a beginners class and they wouldnt be watching a youtube video. im not trying to sound rude, or excuse away the false phrasing that the presenter had. Im saying that she made a mistake but that doesnt discount her previous work.

I knew you'd be that kind of commenter to selectively misquote others just to have a faint echo of being in the right. You're doing it not once, but two times in a row. As everyone can read, I said: "The architect mixes up feet with miles with...." and this is the part you deleted.... "the SAME values". So, like 50 miles and 50 feet. That's not a difference in distance to ignore or go "honest mistake, you're such a pro" about it. Or even "not a mistake because it's the same system", as you claim after changing my quote. I also said: When a teachers says: "dial it in at 1/64 of a second". I did not say "dial it in ON YOUR FLASH". That's the part that you added to completely change my analogy. Again. It's about students holding a camera with flash and a teacher telling them: "dial it in at 1/64th of a second." If the whole class is going to believe the teacher means the flash, it's a very bad teacher or bad class. As an occasional commenter and for the sake of a basic intellectual level of conversation, this misquoting, defending what's not to defend, boarderline trolling and annoying everyone to bits is what makes YT so ridiculous. Oh and both ladies still made a stupid mistake. Whatever circular reasoning you're throwing at me, nothing is going to change that. The technical aspect of photography is pure science and physics. And like most science: there is only one correct word. A synonym could be tolerated to an extent, but mixing two completely different variables not. It's supposed to be a tutorial. Helping people. Not confusing them. The aggravating circumstances being: it's a video. It's not some random spontaneous conversation you hear in reallife, it's edited in a video, so they heard it about five times in a row and still didn't correct it or added a text in the video afterwards, like many others do. Either they don't understand their mistake or they don't give a f*ck about it. Either way, it's an insult to their audience. Thousands of KZreadrs want to make money or get publicity by giving tutorials. You have some good ones, lots of crappy ones and even more mediocre ones. If it's one thing we have as viewers, it's the right to criticise. I put this in the last category.

Thank God I got the Lighting 101 DVD. I would have been totally lost with this poor presentation and lack of professionalism. It would have probably been better explained by someone who actually knows something about flash photography.
