We throw our veggie scraps into the freezer until we have enough for broth so they don’t get gross! Then everything into the slow cooker for 12-15hrs at low temp and it’s super easy and delicious way to make homemade broth.

I live in suburbs and I have just started digging my scraps into the small tiny garden I have cause we don't have space for a veggie patch so this is my contribution to reducing our waste. i absolutely love home cooking from scratch and really find my whole family enjoys the meals so much more. thank you for sharing your beautiful journey. Btw the cartons that hold the veggie broth cannot be recycled on Maui. You can look it up on the carton it provides a link to check to see if there Is a recycling center on Maui and they are not recyclable. They all including the non diary milk cartons need to be thrown in the trash, and also if you don’t want to make veggie broth, you can use better than bouillon which comes in a glass bottle

I live in Vermont and no matter what our housing situation, we have to compost! I live in an apartment and I am so grateful for this - first of all, it’s better for the environment, but it just makes so much more sense (putting your food scraps and trash together is kinda gross). My complex just keeps a few large compost bins next to our the community trash and recycling area. Love living in a state that embraces composting for all.

Hey Ellen, thanks for the tips! If I may, try using citric acid instead of vinegard for cleaning, it's much more environmentally friendly, and safe to use on metals! Also, if you drop 10 g of good quality and eco friendly dish soap in the citric acid+water mix (100 g + 400 g), you have a really good product for cleaning every surface, from kitchen to bathroom (not real stone and marble, as it's acidic)! I am personally not a fan of essential oils, too many plants and flowers are used to make those, and they can cause allergic reactions...

I wanted to point out that it’s ok to compost sometimes, even it doesn’t work for you to do it every day or every season. I’m really good at composting in the nice seasons, and actually take my compost directly to the outside bin. There are still days I don’t, but I do notice less waste in the trash overall and still end up with compost for gardening. I used to feel like I couldn’t do it at all because I wasn’t perfect about it.

In Vermont it's now mandatory to compost, and they are providing a state paid pick-up service. Still, I'm the only one of my neighbors who actually composts because there's not really any way to enforce it! I constantly see lots of food scraps in the dumpster, even though the compost bin is literally right next to the dumpster. Hopefully it can still make a difference though, and hopefully other states follow suit soon. Or else pretty soon Vermont is going to be the only livable state left, and we are a small state

As a vegan and someone who loves animals, I wonder why the Fisher family doesn't have any pets. Many studies state it's so beneficial for kids to grow up with pets, both emotionally and for health reasons. I notice many vegans on youtube don't have any pets actually! As someone who became a vegetarian at 10 after making the connection that my pet bird was in the same family as chickens, I find this so odd that so many 'animal lovers' don't have any animals!

Do you wash items you buy before putting them into your house? I would have washed the towels before hanging, unless you did and just didn’t mention it! Love the video ❤️❤️❤️

You can pay for the service in some cities. For example, in Memphis, TN you can pay for a program called “the compost fairy.”

@@jongrenon2596 you’re right! I’ve been watching Ellen for as long as she’s had a channel. I just remember she promoted a book about the truth behind them and all that. It’s totally her business though. I’m opposed to the new shot too.

I love the videos. But I will tell you one thing. I have worked in the garment industry and every time I buy something, I have to launder it. I know where it’s been and I would rather be safe.

Ellen, I really trust your opinion because I see a lot of myself in you. Also, you’ve done phenomenal with your eco home and family. I was hoping you had an opinion or could form one on essential oils? I have a good friend who has a business with Young Living Essential Oil company and I’ve been curious about them. My trouble is, I’m not sure what or who to trust on oils. I’ve had oils that were so poor quality that I’m not sure they were healthy. But my main concern here is the origin of the oils and is it economically sustainable. From what I’ve read, the YL oils seem good but I guess I’m having a hard time trusting anyone and I thought you might have a passionate opinion on oils?
