Dude... Ace Ventura was not hired to help the indigenous people because he is a "white saviour" which they allegedly need for any progress, but because he is just the world's best pet detective, totally indipendent from his skin colour. Also, Ace Ventura especially makes fun of the white leading people and their habits. Think of the scene where he knocks out the "Monopoly Man" and uses him as scarf because his white rich wife thinks that it is ok to kill animals just for this purpose. Meanwhile at the villages of the indigenous people he either adopt their habits to become better able to work with and for them. Or he makes fun on certain charakters there as he does it anywhere. So, no racism at all.

How is Big Trouble in Little China racist? Because of 'mysticism'? What now? Most of the cast is Asian, most of the heroes are Asian. Even the bad guys played great memorable, cult classic, characters. The movie itself is an ode to Chinese movies with the mysticism theme and played out like those Chinese movies did. So, I don't see how it's a "Top 10" racist movie...

There are certainly elements in Big Trouble in Little China that are racially insensitive and based on old stereotypes, but one of the biggest things that the movie does that I think this video gets mixed up is that the character of Jack Burton is not the "white savior." Quite the opposite. The film makes it pretty clear that the Chinese characters are the ones we really should be rooting for, who have the most agency in the plot, and who are mostly responsible for taking down Lo Pan. Jack is completely out of his depth and just along for the ride.

When it comes to "Gone with the Wind", the thing is the woman that played Mammy, Hattie McDaniel, ended up getting the Oscar for best supporting actress, the first African American to ever receive an Oscar. Yes, the movie is dated, but at least it's not as racist as the original book. Believe me, it's much worse. I remember in a documentary that the producer of the film, David O. Selznick, wanted to try to honor the black actors as much as possible because of how he felt with the Jewish people (he was Jewish as well) being discriminated in Nazi Europe. To do that he got rid of racial slurs used in the book as well as and any reference to the KKK. As a film enthusiast, I give Mr. Selznick respect for what he did with what he had.

Respect the man, but damn the film. Hell, fudge the academy at the time too. Yea, Miss Hattie McDaniel received an Oscar, but she wasn't allowed to attend the ceremony. In fact, no one even knows what happened to her Oscar.

Hattie McDaniel was quoted as saying "I'd rather PLAY a maid and be paid $300.00 than BE a maid and be paid $3.00." Her performance is the glue holding the whole story together. Interestingly enough, Mammy was a fairly minor character in the book (which was so racist I could barely get through it , with the n-word on every page. All that was pretty much edited out). I do wonder if McDaniel was so impressive in her role that the scriptwriters gave her more to do. From what I've heard, the script kept evolving even during the shoot. Where would GWTW be without "waitin' for him just like a SPIDER", "it ain't fittin'", and that amazing scene where she and Melanie walk up the stairs and Mammy tells her the tragic story of Bonnie's death. I CRY EVERY TIME. Every time.

@@Shng275 She couldn't even attend the premiere in Atlanta due to segregation at that time. Clark Gable, who was a good friend of Hattie, even planned on not attending in support for her, but she insisted he should go. She would later attend the New York and Hollywood premieres. On a side note, she did attend the Oscars, but the hotel where it was held had her segregated from the other attendees. The only other people at her table was her escort and her agent. As for her Oscar, it is a shame that it practically disappeared. God knows where it is, but it would be a big discovery if someone found it.

You’ve clearly missed the whole point of Ace Ventura. Ace Ventura is awkward wherever he goes, whoever he’s with, because he’s so passionate about helping animals that he does all kinds of things that people think are weird or inappropriate. He’s more in touch with animals than he is with humans, in other words. On top of that, Ace Ventura is very confident, so he goes in guns blazing every time. He’s in Africa to save the bat, and to him, helping the people who care about the bat is secondary.

There is one problem with the video's objection about Indian culture in Temple of Doom; the thugee cult actually existed in real life. Not in the 1930s however; it was wiped out by the British in the previous century. It was also far less flamboyant and far more secretive than as shown in the movie. But in the 19th century it was a cult devoted to ritualistic murders of merchants, travelers and foreigners (sans mysticism, live beating hearts pulled from chests, and so on) as human sacrifices to the Indian goddess Kali. It was considered to be a widespread problem at the time, as the targets were usually wealthy. That said, the movie *is* still highly inaccurate in how it portrays Indian culture... but the video's implication that the thugee cult was entirely fictional is equally inaccurate.

It didn’t get criticized in its time. Mickey Rooney said the following: “Blake Edwards ... wanted me to do it because he was a comedy director. They hired me to do this overboard, and we had fun doing it. ... Never in all the more than 40 years after we made it-not one complaint. It's a spoof on traditional westerns with Russell playing the John Wayne character but he's the butt of the jokes. The characters of Asian heritage are the badass heroes who defy most stereotypes. 5:57 I'm sorry, but this made me roar out in laughter xD! Also, don't mess with Ace Ventura 2. That movie is the basis of my humour :P! Maybe not the racist stuff, but the things he actually does; behaviour etc. (Example: Standing on a tree branch, talking with his ass and yelling like Tazan.) Also, the natives in that movie made fun of Ace Ventura too. WatchMojo forgot to add that! This is basically how it is: You don't put any foreign character of race or colour in your film, and it's racism. You put them in your movie, but people get angry no matter what. Are you kidding me? The Gone With The Wind scene with a yelling black woman? OFC they yell. Most humans yell! Cause we are humans! I think that the cult in Indiana Jones are more based on the incans. They sacrificed thousand of people, and cut out the hearts of those unfortunate enough to be the sacrifice. If someone put an Indian friend I work with in a movie, depicting him like he is, people would say it's racist; but frankly he is really like that, and people really like him for it too! He's a funny, but in a serious way. Regarding the bug eating, I know for a fact they eat bugs not so far from India, but I can't remember what countries. Also just for your information; India is being called Bhārat now. Not that I would use that name (I would probably forget it, and say India instead). Anyway. I think it's safe to say that the culture in Indiana Jones is based on more than one culture; they just happened to be in India. 10:28

Would Indiana Jones be willing to help these people if they were *not* impoverished and living on Central Park West? I think Kate Capshaw was more offensive with the "helpless white woman" act that needed to scream every 10 seconds. Last time I checked, the idea of James Bond looking Japanese was the idea of a JAPANESE MAN. God help the Intelligence community who tries to get a 6' tall Gaijin to actually *blend in* amidst an assignment so as not to stand out. As far as Gone with The Wind goes.....it takes place *during* the Civil War! Who is saying no other country has made movies stereotyping Americans or Europeans ? This is an American channel geared twds Americans. Of course they’re going to be talking about American movies.

No one cares about American propaganda but us. Thus the rest of the world is busy making American jokes and enjoying themselves.

@@Skute I feel like even on a global scale whenever offensive movies are talked about they only talk about American movies. And yeah I know this channel is geared more towards america but there have been a couple of American movies in the past 15 years that were pretty much only made to stereotype white people and no one kicked up a fuss

GWTW was a product of its source, and its time, and its racist undertones were historically correct. You can hardly expect today's politically correct, diverse, woken sentiments to be portrayed in a story set in the 1860s. Besides which, Hattie McDaniel won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 1939 for her role, the first Black woman to do so.

A lot of people in the comments are getting offended at other people getting offended.. or something.I think what they are going for is otherwise straightforward films mostly (not satire such as Blazing Saddles, Tropic Thunder or God forbid Team America) Most of these just sort of throw said stereotype in for no particular reason, like an early attempt at diversity gone horribly wrong. I don't know why Soul Man didn't make the list though 🤨 ...And Big Trouble in Little China kinda is satire.

No one is offended that others are offended. People are sick of hearing about social injustice. People are looking through movies that are 30 to 50 some years old to find racism. That’s a sign that’s things are just a little bit overboard. Seems as if the left crave their daily fix of social injustice lol

Cason point! Lethal weapon. First time, Mel Gibson shows up at the house of Danny Glover as his new partner, Danny Glover’s daughter walks into the room and says, (do you remember this part? Get ready!) “Are we being audited again?” Lololol! Racist? Damn Skippy! But hilarious!

The reason James Bond dressed up like an Asian man was because they were trying to pass him off as the husband of the Japanese agent he was working with. The point of going undercover is to go unnoticed. Since he is European, he would stand out more in Japan.

Came here to comment on Big Trouble in Little China BC I've been watching that movie since I was a little girl, it's my fav movie ever... I embraced Chinese and Asian culture, and have been in awe with it ever since because of this film💞 The biggest advocate for fair/equal opportunities for Asian actors, and Asian and chinese actors being recognised is James Hong, and he nor any of the Asian actors had an issue with this film nor think it was racist... The "undertone" may be there, but to anyone who really knows the actors, director, and the film, they'll see how this film is just amazing and any claims of racism is already dismissed by James Hong, Dennis Dunn and others!

It's official. The Asians you mentioned, speak for all Asians. Therefore it can't be racist.

Every time I hear the word “Asian accent” by Americans, I’m really confused. Even if they mean Eastern Asian in most of case, Chinese speaking English, Japanese, Korean etc. all they sound quite different to my “Asian” ears…
