One tip that really helps me break things up is to see things in shapes rather than as the objects they are. A tree might be a series of triangles (one for each value) for instance. This works really well for landscapes and faces. Instead of seeing mountains and trees or a coast with cliffs, I try to see the shapes that values take. It pulls me away from the details of the object.

Up until now I've largely focused on realism, borderline hyper-realism, so these tips are a huge help. I'll probably add one more tip for those like me. Watch a couple of useful videos like this one, but then get on with it and start practicing. I've often been too caught up in getting every possible tip before starting, that I never get started before the day is actually over.
Which was your favourite tip? 😄 also I didn’t mention it the video but I have just opened a Patreon 😍🥳🤩 so if you’d like to visit the link is in the description box ❤️ thank you everyone for your support!! X

Squinting, ref photo far away (I majorly get hung up on details), grip the brush nearer the end, focus on values. Going to try some plein air soon, am near-sighted so I could try taking off my glasses, really excited to use my near-sightedness as a useful tool 😂

Squinting is definetly one that has helped me alot that i have been able to apply already, but instead of squinting i just slightly cross my eyes so it gives the same effect but people dont think i look weird unless they r looking straight at me😅
Fabulous tips! My favorites: Squint, stand, “think like an artist” and teach yourself to see things differently!
I’ve tried using bigger brushes and it really does help! Less tempted to add detailed and get to have fun with the brush strokes - Thanks for the tips!! 💛💛

I’m going to try this! I usually end up using tiny brushes for the whole painting.
I really like your tip on using a timer!
My favourite tip was less paint for a smoother background. It makes sense. Least favorite was giving myself a short time limit. I think I would end up with a big mess! Thanks for your inspiration. You are definitely the most inspiring artist on you tube. You make me want to paint.
Thank you. God bless you and your family. ❤
Favorite tips: big brushes, time limit, squint, and stand up, stand back :-) Thanks so much! Love this tips list! As a beginner, I am needy for all tips and info :-) jokingly kinda said to a friend I am making things blurry like seeing without my glasses on 😁 that idea makes it easier for me to make marks with paint cuz fuzzy unclear is fine 😱💕thanks for your help!
I love standing to paint (although it becomes tiresome) but once I get into the movement of the painting, it works so much better than sitting! Focusing on the basic shapes and base colours of the subject/reference photo also really helps to ignore the details if you're trying impressionism or abstract. And then building on the colours, so that you still get a layer effect and texture will make the painting look interesting and professional, without going into the fine details of what you're painting. Thank you Katie for your tips! Cheers :)
Taking breaks from the reference can help too! I never tried painting so far away from the canvas, now I just *have* to try it out! Thank you for sharing 🖤✨

The timing tip helped me. Until you said it I had never thought of timing myself.
amazing advice!! ❤️ i always find myself grabbing a small brush wayyy too soon so I think I’m going to lock them away for my next piece and only use larger brushes!!
You are awesome , thank you so much for this video. I was struggling so much, but you made it so clear. The first thing I did was to take my glasses off. It helped tremendously! 🤓
How about listening to music while painting? I have a coworker going to give me a large wooden easel…will try painting standing up. Thanks for the tips!
I will use new tools and big brushes... Thanks
Part of me didn’t realize what impressionistic means, and just realized that’s the style you use to paint with cause of this video. Very interesting! love your paintings!
Congratulations and thank you for your generosity, Katie

Awesome tips! You're such a wonderful teacher. Your video was motivated me to try to paint and it turned out more spectacular than I ever thought it would. I watched your huge Peonies picture first... where you just put in colors and then outlining with whiter color highlighting brought it all together! Fantastic... wish you lived closer! I am in the US.... blessings to you!
Wow, I did not know these tips and can now see what it is I love about the impressionist's era. Making th objective subjective. thanks and cheers from you friendly lion.
Hi! Katie Jobling. I'm here because you are so beautiful 😍😄 and your paintings are beautiful too😍😍. Who like me, raise your hand!😂😂 Thank you for sharing!
Using a big brush was my favourite tip. Never realized that is one of the integral things of the technique.
First time I heard of keeping the reference photo further away - that's a great tip :)
Cool! Very valuable and practical tips, straightforward and very clear instructions and you are so beautiful! Thank you for sharing. God bless you more! And by the way, I like all your tips!
I paint whit himi miya gouache 56 colour set and acrylic gouache from liquitex😊 i love you,re paintings. I love to paint in my canson xl aquarel sketchbook and on my canvas boards 😊
Wow you're the first person to mention the squint thing. It really helps to divide out proportions equally
like your upbeat love of painting. Your encouragement along with the tips will help me experiment. Thanks again.

Thank you Katie, love these tips. I really appreciate your sharing. You were my first youtube art teacher and I still love your tutorials. I love the squinting tip, it really does work ❤
Thank you
I love the painting in the back! is there a video about it?
Hard to know which tip is best. The whole package is great. I guess working quickly through squinted eyes ...oops that's 2 hints. Thanks heaps. Love your videos ....succinct clear & easy to understand. 😍😍😍🤗
Great advice. I’m just a hobby painter and not a very good one at that. But I enjoy it. But it’s true about when you’re talking to someone and you’re thinking about how to paint the building behind them etc. I look at things differently now since i started. How the sun hits a hillside or wispy clouds vs big fluffy clouds. I definitely try to paint realistic even when I try not to. Very irritating.
I’m going to play around with bigger brushes and standing while painting! Thanks Katie😍
I like that this was to the point! Thank you! I’m excited!!!
Comes in the right time. Want to paint impressionistic landscapes and struggle. :) ❤️ Thanks Katie.
I giggled at 3:35 at your, "...that can help you input some of that BUHA into your painting".... I agree completely! :)
I definitely will try squint more (even if I'll look weird) and put the reference photo at a bigger distance. Thanks for the tips! ^_^
Love your humour and infectious joy. Even your eyes are smiling! Feeling inspired 💝
Very good tips…. Thank you ! Last tip was the best.
Thank you for these, your tips sound super useful! Going to try them!
The size brush is a very helpful tip and how to hold it

You're so cute 🥰 and the tips are great! I've tried big brushes, it gives really an impressionistic look to the painting. I'll try other tips too, thanks!
Excellent advice. I loved the squint tip. I wear reader glasses & I hate wearing them when I paint. So now I won't... & two problems have been solved. ps. I love your work. It's beautiful.
Thank u

Great tips and love the sorry to the basket. Since I have been I poured by your art and channel I am slowly letting go and enjoying the freedom of loose brush strokes. It’s feels good to be free
I love you so much 😩❤❤❤
Every tip is a learning step.
I was searching up some impressionism today, really nice video again! I can't wait to try some tips, especially the last one. I should buy myself more canvassess to practice though 😁
Great Tips Just what I needed
I'm in 10th grade and we were tasked with painting and I chose impressionism, The problem is we'll do it in school and on our own sits (we Don't have art rooms and it's just an assignment but I want to do great) which is SUCH A SMA SPACE 💀 and we'll do it on a paper that is not even that thick or even a watercolor paper 🧍🏻♀️🧍🏻♀️🙎🏻♀️
Great tips, thank you!
Thank you Katie!! I needed this info today❤️

That's really important and fantastic video😍👍
Thank you for sharing. so helpful for a self-learner. I have a question about tip 4, to focus on the value and intensity of color. I couldn't understand what it meant (I'm not English speaker). Do you mean that even if it's a landscape at a certain distance, still we need to create an edge for it?
Great tips. It can also help if you blur your reference photo using the app, so you can't see the details.
This is so helpful, thank you❤️
I love your studio.........
