10 Hour Road Trip For A Base Model Honda Rancher 420.. | Goodbye CAN-AM

Ever since selling my Can-Am Outlander 650 XT (Which I loved..) I have been on the hunt for a replacement. My favorite thing to do on a four wheeler is play in the water so it only made sense to go with a Honda.
The ATV market is on fire right now and after a couple long weeks I came across an amazing deal on a Rancher 420 4X4. One problem, it was in NEW YORK! But if you know me, I can't pass up a good deal so we loaded up the Grandpa mobile and headed east to pick up this barn find of a 4 wheeler.
Thankfully it was worth the drive so without further ado, here is my brand new Honda Rancher 420! We talk about why I made the switch from Can-Am and ultimately my plans for the snorkel build. Already taking it through some deep water we need to get started on this build ASAP!

Soo, I bought, and still own, a 2007 Rancher 420 ES. I completely agree with everything you have said. I threatened to lemon law the machine as it was back to the dealer 7 times for the electronic shift in the 1st year. However, they finally got it fixed and hasnt been back since, for that. My transmission went 2 yrs ago, and just did an engine rebuild as it was blowing smoke like a 2 STROOOOKE! However, I love the ride. Doesnt do bumps particularly well, but is small and nimble thru the woods. Never had a huge issue with the straight axle, but ground clearance is pretty low, I was always the first to get hung up. I think 14 yrs of plowing snow may be the culprit for the transmission failure, thats a lot of shifting from 1-2-1-R and repeat...im really interested in seeing how a locker works out for you

There is a hidden Dif Lock on the 420 just lightly squeeze the right brake lever and the 4 wheel will start to grab and spin. Honda doesnt tell you this but trust me it does work.

I drove a 3 hr round trip for a brand new 2023 Honda rancher 420 4x4 foot shift (Red). I got it for $6,600 cash with 1.2Hrs and 2 miles. It was from the Honda of Palestine giveaway somone won and it bought it off them. I recently put a 3,000lb winch and a Honda back up pull start and a 12v Honda acc outlet.

Had a 2003 honda rancher with ES never had a single problem out of the electric shift. I put it threw everything, still running strong to this day and still no shift problems from the electric shift.

Some people don’t realize that Honda will only last forever if you keep fluids in them and if you put synthetic oil and dif fluid they will last forever

My rancher with ES I ran hard for over a decade without ever having a problem and loved the electric shift. Those foot shifters are a pain in the ass when you are riding in the mud and bog. I have had a couple Honda’s with foot shifters and I honestly loved the ES. Awesome new aTV Tanner

I've got a 2000 model Rancher ES 2X4 that will probably outlive me. She still runs like a top. Honda ATVs are virtually indestructible. Excited to see your build progress! Keep em coming bro!🇺🇸💪🏻

You can lock the differential by pressing the front brake and that will lock it when you need it.

I have basically the same "boat" but a 2008 (fuel injected) with ESP. Mine works for a living (and plays here and there) and the ESP has been FLAWLESS. I think the people that have problems are banging the gears with full power upshifts or completely dumping the things in mud holes. The one thing that I LOVE about the ESP is how you can have big ass moon boots on and not have to worry about foot shifting. The 420 is surprisingly sporty and is one of the most bulletproof machines out there! You'll have a great 3 months with it, LOL! Enjoy bud! Hope you're doing well.

I bought a Can Am, after owning a couple trouble free Honda Ranchers (I sold the last one because I was not riding much anymore, and then I moved and now I live on an ATV trail), any who, I decided to try a Can Am 420 5 years ago because they were 1000 less than the Honda. From the start it had an issue with almost stalling whenever the throttle was initially pushed or when it was about to be let go, and eventually it would occasionally stall. It was not a consistent problem, but happened often enough that I sold it recently because I didn't want to get left stranded. I bought the extended warranty, despite it being brand new when I bought it, and I brought it back to the dealership repeatedly to ask them to find the issue and fix it, and all they kept telling me was that they couldn't duplicate the issue and that it was just cold or had bad gas. Are you kidding? In my opinion CAN AM CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS AND IS NON EXISTENT, THEY DO NOT STAND BY THERE PRODUCT LIKE HONDA DOES! I sold the defective ATV (fully disclosed that to the buyer) and had to take at least 500 off because of the issue that CAN AM REFUSED TO FIX!! NEVER AGAIN will I buy any CAN AM products!!! Planning on buying a new ATV in spring and it will be a Honda this time!
