Cliche, I know , but it's my Mother :) she has supported my intellectual (and other) curiosities my whole life. From hours taking me to the library or driving me into the big city to go to the stores there. Letting me use her card online when I was too young. She was the main support of the family and so encouraging for me to seek what would make me happy and content while letting me make my own mistakes and hopefully learn a few lessons on the way 😊 Thanks, Mother!

My first thought is even though my mom died when I was a very little girl, the stories about her inspire me to live my life to the fullest. One reason I really liked this video was learning about the strength of other motherless daughters, it's always been a weird and alienating part of my identity, but I'd be lying if I didn't enjoy a sense of kinship watching this

By Jewish law (Halacha), that would make you, your mother's family, and any descendants through your great-great-grandmothers' lineage Jewish. The Neshama (Jewish soul) is transferred from mother to child.

Had to take a moment to type out Etty Hillesum's quote so that I can continue to reflect on such power: “It has been brought home forcibly to me here, how every atom of hatred added to the world makes it an even more inhospitable place. But, against every new outrage and every fresh horror, we shall put up one more piece of love and goodness, drawing on strength from within ourselves. We may suffer, but we must not succumb. I see no other solution, I really see no other solution than to turn inward and to root out all the awfulness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we have first changed ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from the war. That we must look into ourselves and nowhere else.” WOW. Makes me tear up and my heart expands. Thank you for such a great great great video. One of my favorites so far, it kills me how little history we have of powerful, spiritual women. Would love a video on your research on mystical women in other religions. Very grateful to you!

Thank you for this enlightening overview of how jewish women's experiences of higher consciousness has contributed to our knowledge of the 'mystical'...really, shafts of Light in the cave of mundane conscious awareness. My special area of interest is Near Death Experiences...how G-d's Presence and higher consciousness is revealed to us. Fascinating how Gershom Shalom has influenced jewish mysticism from his armchair perspective.

I am listening to you speak quite eloquently about Etty Hillesum. She has turned my life upside down ... I am smitten. Have read her diary...both versions over 20 times...and now treat it as a textbook to life. I learned after looking at youtube....there are very few videos about her in English. I have had to put up a couple myself... though im not nearly as eloquent as you. America is in dark ages... I am hoping you can take just the Etty section of your video n post it under her name. It would improve the selection about her vastly. Thanks so much. John Mathew Smith

I don't think it's repost just that clip, i would want to remake it and redo it afresh if i was to post. But... you're more than welcome to screen-capture that part of the video, or download it and cut it, if you know how to do that, and repost it from your channel. Let me know if you'd like to do that . With love, Zevi

Another great video - thanks! That intro was quite beautiful as well. It reminded me of my favorite Machiavelli quote as well as my own experience with my teachers which had died hundreds of years ago. I must say I was not familiar with any of these prior to your video. So thank you for getting their names out there! The contrast between what appears to be a lack of women Kabbalists and the extreme importance of the feminine Shekinah in mystical texts and practices has fascinated me I am of the opinion that women play a central role in the coming restoration and redemption of the world. I am awaiting as well as doing my part so that there may be two great luminaries face to face once again. That easily overlooked problem in the beginning of Genesis as well as the Midrash concerning it and some of Luria's ideas I believe are related to this passage have long fascinated me. Women having a more active role in the world be it secular or religious is a good indication of positive things to come. The works of those mentioned in the video could perhaps set the stage and pave the way for more women to engage in the more mystical aspects of their traditions And related to Scholem's point about the language and structure and pretty much everything about Jewish mysticism being masculine it's hard to argue otherwise . Though as far as the future goes it is said that when God speaks He speaks in the language of man. Now in the last century or even half a century the language of man, especially as it relates to all that is masculine and feminine , has changed so drastically. Perhaps now if one keeps their heart open and still cares to listen things would sound much different as far as the language of the mystics and prophets appear :) This is all just one man's opinion though I'm aware many would disagree. ;) All the best to you and thanks for the content as always!

Nice 😊 Sounds like what the Kabbalist and Hasidic mystics refer to as Devekut, Hitkalelut or Hitachdut. Something that most of the women in video presumably would have been striving for, or ever “reached,” as disciples of Kabbalah and Chassidut. And the others that don’t fall into those categories seem to be striving for unity via other mediums/traditions 😊

  • @theinkbrain

@@SeekersofUnity 'Striving" makes one a seeker. 'Reaching and achieving' makes one a Mystic. A mystic is not an 'also ran'. A mystic is one who is at one with God. I am sorry, I am ashamed to say I am ignorant about the Hebrew terms, and I don't know what they mean. Many mystics have searched and found in union with God in secret, and they have remained unknown to the world. They have no ego in the sense that we ordinary humans have. For Mystics the ego/personality is just a threadbare suit they wear while they keep their human form. They know that their *real nature* is nameless and formless and that their consciousness is undivided by name and form. A Mystic can impart Self-realization to a person who is 'ready' by a word, a look, a touch or a thought. Mystics know that the real is unreal and that it is the unreal that is real, but these are just bits inadequate bits of human language we use to try and describe the ineffable. P.s I have to find, dust-off and re-read my old copy of 91/2 mystics.

It’s all good, no need to be ashamed, we all come to here to learn. I find the way you write of mysticism, the words you use to express the inexpressible, quite beautiful. Thank you. 9 1/2 is a beautiful book, enjoy re-reading it. The thought came to suggest another book for you, although there are hundreds, if not thousands, of books of and on Jewish mysticism. I’d like to recommend Adam Afterman’s “And They Shall Be One Flesh”: On the Language of Mystical Union in Judaism. Enjoy, brother.
