10 Hidden Video Game Gems For The Sega Saturn

Ойындар

Identifying hidden gems on a console that is something of a hidden gem in itself is an interesting conundrum. With the possible exceptions of Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter, and Daytona USA, pretty much every highly-rated Saturn game could be considered obscure in the bigger picture. So, set aside Guardian Heroes, forget about Panzer Dragoon Saga, and let's take a REALLY deep dive into the Saturn's best kept secrets of all. Here are 10 Hidden Video Game Gems For The Sega Saturn!

The Saturn was an amazing console that I feel like has gotten a second life and a complete re-evaluation over the two decades or so since it's been around. People understand that 2D is superior to 3D now when it comes to the old stuff.

My youngest brother got a Saturn for his birthday shortly after it ended. You could get it cheap at FuncoLand (now Game Stop) so it was easy to for him to get games since they were all going for cheap. He actually had Mr. Bones and Powerslave. He still swears that Mr. Bones is brilliant for its unique story used to cobble together a series platforming and minigames. Considering there are levels where you hit guitar riffs to convent an army of skeletons to your side, a one where you had to hit buttons in the right order to tell jokes in order to win a boss fight, and a level where you are a skull and spinal cord bouncing on shards of glass in the center of the universe as the soundtrack is a guy explaining the meaning of "The Blues" I would say it was pretty ambitious for its time.

I got Dark Savior after mistaking it for Vampire Savior, and BOY, I didn't know what I was in for. The weirdest part about the divergent storyline is that it unfolds somewhat organically as the player's skill level increases. So you naturally get the whole story as you play and replay the game. And GOD, I love Dragon Force. Cleared all the kingdoms one grand summer in my youth. The Sega Saturn feels to me like the first time quality was cast aside for novelty: these 2D graphics still hold up rather well today, while a lot of "cutting-edge for the time" 3D looks like crap.

Yeah, if you go back and look at a lot of the reviews of things back then they would praise 3D games just for existing while constantly spitting on 2D games every chance they got calling them old and obsolete. The Saturn definitely got the last laugh as far as I'm concerned as I may have played more PlayStation back in the day but Saturn games hold up infinitely better than the terrible blocky 3D that was the height of popularity back then. Same goes for the Dreamcast as far as I'm concerned. I'm still hoping we get power Stone in a collection or something sometime down the line. (I know there was a PSP version but I can't really count that)

This reminds me of a point that someone made about Sonic Mania; if a 2d Sonic game like that had been made for the Saturn, it would have probably been crucified by gaming journalists who would have had issues with it being 2d regardless of how fun it was or how much it built on the Mega Drive games. The contemporary critical responses to a lot of these games provides evidence that their assessment was right. It would have been neat to see a 3d Sonic game on the Saturn apart from Sonic R but Sonic X-treme seemed like it would have failed to be that good due to how slow it seemed (which would have potentially been less of a problem if it wasn't a Sonic game).

@@tempestfennac9687 Yeah unfortunately something Sega did quite often and actually unfortunately still did occasionally all the way into and through the Dreamcast's short life was do ports with little to no extras. Unfortunately Sega was at their heart an arcade company and more times than not they would do a straight up arcade to console port and the port itself would be compromised in some capacity and on top of that would have a lack of content. A double slap in the face.

Albert Odyssey feels like an old Tales of game, if you're into that kind of thing, except everything in the game is inexplicably drawn out. Sega never should have been forced out of the game industry, of course that's what Sony has been doing to other companies for 25 years now. I grew up in this time, and witnessed many times when Saturn games were given biased reviews. Or were simply paid off, take your pick. I mean Castlevania SOTN should have been the superior version on the Saturn, but of course that didn't happen. It's a system loaded with great shooters, rpg's, and great games in general. And I conspiracy theorist? Not likely, I mean I've only been doing this since 1980.
