As someone who has lived in NYC for over 13 years in her adult years after college and was born here and raised by true New Yorkers. All my extended family both on my mom and dads side are all New Yorkers this video is ALLLL correct. Listen to him. He knows exactly what he’s talking about. He nailed all the points others tend not to talk about when visiting or even living here. Very well done video. Everything is 100% accurate. Tourists, take notes and hope you enjoy our crazy, awesome, expensive, intense, weird but wonderful city!

4:15 That's a really great point, celebrities are everywhere especially in Brooklyn, but it's kinda of just like a head-nod "I know who you are, what's up" kind of thing as you pass them, rather than "OMG I NEED YOUR AUTOGRAPH". Growing up in Park Slope, I lived down the block from Steve Buscemi, and sometimes I'd see him at like 2-3 in the morning when I was out walking my dog, and it would scare the shit out of me tbh. He is a great actor, but also a creepy looking dude to see strolling out of the fog on a deserted street at night lol

I agree with your time vs. money comment. I've stayed in lower Manhattan (several times), midtown (several times), Queens and Long Island City to name a few. The commute is significant in some of the outlying (cheaper) areas. It is imperative to keep this in mind as you plan your day.

That video is spot on ! Every tourist visiting Manhattan needs to watch this ! I like the fact you don’t sugar coat things ! I am just back from New York and all of this made so much sense .I found New Yorkers to be great and very helpful , they remind me of Londoners , they are straight to the point and no nonsense but always willing to lend a hand if you are stuck. Be respectful to them and they will respect you. I do feel New Yorkers get a really bad press . With regards to your surroundings and dealing with certain people , just be streetwise , and use common sense ! Like Barrio says always go with your gut , if a situation feels wrong get yourself out of that situation ......it’s not Disney world ,thankfully .

My cousin from Peru was visiting NYC and she freaked out when she saw a large homeless person flaying their arms and taking to themself on the subway platform. I told her that is the norm. That was during pre-pandemic times. Now you need to be on your guard if you venture in the bowls of the city.

A lot of the time that's an intimidation tactic - they're trying to see if they can get you to react. Best thing to do is ignore and keep walking (but watch out of corner of eye - try to keep your distance if you can, beware of the elbow jab to ribs or stomach so they can mug you; they are trying to put you off balance so they - or a partner - can rob you). Of course sometimes they're just off they're meds

My husband and I have psychiatric backgrounds as we both worked at a crisis center for years. We hear yelling and will instantly say, “psych patient” and keep going. We also worked with a lot of homeless patients and have deep compassion for those in need. Being in Houston, we become accustomed to that population and often wonder what they do for their homeless. Memphis was different. They had quite a few resources. Not enough but we were able to help many of our patients. Love your videos. We’re coming to New York next. I’m learning so much!

Hey Jon. I travelled to NYC for the first time before Covid and your videos were super helpful, I managed to avoid most tourist traps. I stayed in a hotel in Long Island City close to the E train, 15 minutes from Midtown, an ok location with more reasonable priced hotels. I saw a lot of weird people, specially in Midtown, but I think that's quite common in most big cities. Can't wait to visit again and If I see you, I'll definitely say hi. Cheers from Brazil!

One thing about Broadway shows, check out the preview tickets because you can often get tickets below $100! But make sure to schedule it towards the end of the preview run because the production has usually worked out any kinks by then. The previews are just a dress rehearsal for the production. Also, the previews sometimes do extra songs and scenes so you get to see more of the show! :-D

I’m totally with you my friend. “The City” is in my soul. The Army has me on lockdown for a few more years, but once I retire (at the youthful age of 46) I plan to move there for at least a year or so depending upon what I find and the overall cost of living. I don’t want to waste my savings on over-inflated rent when I can use it to travel the world instead. Your videos are always on point and when talking to people about visiting NYC that have never been, I always refer them to your channel. I plan to visit sometime this summer. I have a musician friend that’s from Brooklyn, if she has a gig someplace awesome like Tavern on the Green or Blue Note, you and the wife should join us for some music and drinks. Keep up the great work!!!

Points 8 and 9 in this vid are so relatable to my 2 trips to NYC haha. Stayed in Bed - Stuy first time and man is it a trek to get to Midtown or Central Park, didn't make that mistake next time and stayed in Astoria, went from 30 minutes to Central Park down to 10 minutes. Also weekend subway changes, pain in the ass. Arrived on a friday night, forgot about the subway works on the weekend and tried to get the subway to WTC from Astoria. Spent half the morning changing trains because line A was now line N, line R was now line X etc etc. And the speakers in the carriage are so quiet you can't tell which is which.

In general yes, but there are countries that take better care of the less fortunate ones. E.g. in Switzerland, you see drunkards and outcasts at trainstations but never with all their stuff/belonging in a cart or so, they all seem to have a save place to put their belongings. But then it's Switzerland, NYC has more inhabitants than the whole of Switzerland, and any country has their issues. In the States I've been to Austin, Boston and NYC, where I currently live, and in every city there were homeless people, but Austin was the worst. Easily every 3rd person in daytime on the commercial streets was homeless, and every 10th was a social worker. Felt really wired shopping. New York has its hotspots too, but due to the sheer amount of people they seem to go under in day to day life. And here most are friendly and not... let's say unpredictable, to put it nicely. But mayor social change would be necessary to help those who have written themselves of any chance in this anti-social system.

I have been following Sarah Funk and Mickey Chen for ideas. The last tip was very good. I am collecting destinations into different itineraries depending on weather and boroughs. That way a wet day in midtown can still be fun.

I’m originally from NYC but now live in Florida. I think this was fantastic advice for anyone! Great reminders for those who are familiar and excellent advice for first time visitors. I’m wondering if you have any pandemic specific tips for those of us visiting right now? I have a trip planned in May (I usually stay in midtown Manhattan). I’m planning for a ‘quiet’ trip- visits to the parks, museums but that’s about it. I usually visit GMA, go to broadway plays and just enjoy the crowds but I’m expecting a much different experience next month.

Thanks for mentioning the jigsaw that can the MTA subway and train schedules - especially on weekends. I have a regular church gig out in Long Island and I have to check every week for services changes -- even though I live walking distance to several subway and bus lines as well as a 35 minute walk on the LIRR that services parts of Eastern Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island, I have found that sometimes it would be best to simply walk the 30 or 40 minutes to the main train line you want to get to (be it subway or LIRR or for those in Manhattan and the Bronx the Metro North) instead of using entirely public transit which takes longer. One thing Barr, you got to do segments on using MTA bus lines to explore NYC. Sounds corny but it isn't. On a summer weekend taking one of the buses from the Met to Union square is probably the most relaxing thing one can do and get oriented to the sites. I suggest avoiding the heart of rush hour but say take the m1 at 11 am from the Met to the East Village, or on the West side one of the buses up to Harlem from Columbus Circle. Bring a snack and water with good company or alone and you get to do some wonderful people watching and a view of some iconic sites in an air-conditioned and generally pleasant bus. Plus it is cheap - $2.75 versus the expensive double decker tour buses. If you want to know something about what you are seeing bring along a guide book and prep yourself beforehand by marking those sites you want to be on the lookout for (for the Met to East Harlem 5th Avenue bus lines some are: Met and Museum mile, Central Park West, Pierre and Plaza Hotels, the great retail fashion stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, St Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, New York Public Library/Bryant Park, Saks Fifth Ave, the design and artisan stores in the low 30s and 20s, some wonderful cast iron buildings sprinkled here and there as you approach the Union Square neighborhood /East Village area. Get off at Union Square to enjoy the park and the excellent shops there). You can also get off sooner at any time - 34th Street to go to the Empire State Building and enjoy Madison Park with a walk farther West to chelsea if you have the time and energy).

Totally agree with point 8. I made the mistake of staying in the deep Bronx with 1 hour subway commute each way. In the winter, daylight is short and will possibly get snowed in. Too little hours to explore.
