I'm probably reading too far into this but Toren the fairy guy's troops all wear soldier gear, which needs monster parts to be upgraded. You basically just have to prove your worth to gain more strength from the great fairy. Because they're the elite soldier group, they all probably had to provide their own monster parts to get good gear, meaning they really are just good soldiers and not just random dudes with good armor

Here's a more sad detail I've noticed. In BotW when you enter Hateno for the first time you're confronted by Thadd, a farmer who had taken it upon himself to become the town's guard. His wife is terrified of you at first, before apologising with an egg (from their many chickens) and rambling on about her family and her inability to not drop eggs. In TotK, Thadd is in Lookout Landing instead, longing to go back home. Hateno guard duties have been taken over by their son Tebo during the day, or his scaredy-cat wife at night. Both of them miss him (his wife is so lonely she briefly starts hitting on Link) and mention they watch the gate because that's what Thadd used to do. Most of their chickens are gone, having been sold to the ranch at the other end of town. Seems like the family has hit some serious financial troubles that Thadd had to look for work halfway across the kingdom.

i don‘t think so, don‘t their chicken just go up to hateno lab with the elderly man during the day? the farmer was a guard, so he probably has at least more fighting skills than the average hateno resident… i think he just felt the need to help out when he heard about the upheaval.

I really like how they went to some lengths of building Zelda up more as a person, leaning hard on her being an archeology nerd, but also just the world having bits of dialogue and writing and NPCs talking about stuff she has done. It builds a sense of time passing between the two games, like years have passed and many things have happened since BOTW. But it also succeeds in opening up this image of what Zelda is like as a person, as a ruler, why she is so beloved around the kingdom, without having us just watch her talk in cutscenes. It's really smart, subtle stuff.

Then flash back to where Princess Sonia and Raurur stand facing the races and getting the oath, followed by shocked Face by Raurur getting addressed as "King Rauru", only to Sonia locking confused about getting addressed as "Queen Sonia". (in my head, the Hylians as a race live in the principality of Hyrule under the Prince or Princess of Hyrule. The Kingdom of Hyrule is the unification of the races and King is just the Title of the ruler of the united forces. The title "princess Zelda" is thus not the lack of coronation - it is her proper title as ruler of the Hylian Race and "the Kingdom of Hyrule" is in fact formed in an oath every time with every ruler - not inherited) Sure, there are Zora Kings, Princess and Princesses - but that fits with real world history where "Prince" was a title distinct from "King", only because of Britain, we somehow linked "Prince" with "Heir", because their Heir is Prince (and ruler) of Wales.

An interesting tidbit about the BotW Great Fairy Fountain locations in TotK: while the one in Kakariko was destroyed by a Chasm and the one on the Gerudo desert buried under the sand, you can still find patches of Mighty Thistle and Silent Princesses where the one near Rito Village used to be. Quite an obvious one, but the original Great Plateau Shiekah Shrines have all been replaced by chasms, while the new Shrine location used to be a Bokoblin skull-base. And there's a hot spring in the Depths beneath where the Shrine of Resurrection used to be.

In breath of the wild, I always thought it kind of weird that the developers decided to place Link’s house and the broken heart pond (which is at the top of the hill next to the house) so close together. The devs have implied that Zelda and Link have gotten closer, and have now made this “Zelda’s house”. Since Zelda is - for all intents and purposes - dead in this game, suddenly the proximity to the broken heart pond made a lot more sense to me. Probably my favorite change is Granté(son). He’s Robbie and Jerrin’s son. In BOTW, you can find him on top of a house in Target Town after you complete it, performing the same job Cece does in TOTK, reselling the one of a kind armor pieces (and the Hylian Shield), in case you loose them. In TOTK, you still find him in Tarrey Town, but find he’s changed his name to Grantéson to work in Hudson Construction, and helps you build your house

I think my favorite change in TOTK from BOTW is how some of the characters have aged, such as the Gerudo girls from BOTW (Dalia, Pearle, and Kalani). They were such small things in BOTW, with Link towering over them. In TOTK, they grew up and are now at Link's height. I figure, in a few years, they will be the ones towering over Link. This isn't true, actually. Zelda doesn't refer to it as "our house" in Japanese. It just uses the character 家, which just generally means house, without modifiers or possessives. I don't know where this rumor started, but it's possible that it came from Google Translate. Japanese (and many languages) often doesn't require pronouns or particles in the same way English does, so in order to translate Japanese into valid English without context, sometimes information needs to be invented to fill in the blanks. It's possible that this idea of "our house" came from one such invention.

This is so interesting, because out of the monster control captains, Hoz was the one that I did remember from Breath of the Wild... it just goes to show how different things stand out to different people, especially since BotW and it's successor are so varied in the amount of ways players engage with them, and what order you can do things.

Tulin had one more line in BOTW. He was waiting by himself for his dad to come home from work. It was so soul crushing cause he knew that what his dad was doing was important, but he wanted him to come home and spend time with his family. That's why it was so nice to talk to him after the quest when he talked about how his dad is home ♥

One person I'm sad to say didn't make it to TOTK (to my knowledge) is Nell. He's the man who stands watch at the base of Akkala Citadel. He fights a moblin each blood moon, but when you aid him, he thanks you and pays respect to the fallen knights of the kingdom (which includes the presumed-dead Link). He would have been a great pick for a Monster control team captain (or even just member) in my opinion.

It makes me wonder how many other Hudson employees changed their names.

Tulin actually got some development in Age of Calamity's DLC when he accidentally gets sent to the past with his father and his time spent with Revalli makes him more confident in learning how to control the wind like him. AoC timeline isn't canon to BotW or TotK, but I think the future champions going back in time to AoC and returning is somewhat canon. So Tulin being the sage was kind of foreshadowed by AoC.

Loone was a Shrine Quest character in BOTW, she was obsessed with this ball, then with guardians. In TOTK, she ventures around Hyrule to document the Great Skeletons. Hino was a character around Dueling Peaks Stable. He will tell you the phase of the moon and go wild during blood moons. In TOTK, he is trapped in various monster camps trying to study them. He also tells you moon phases. I have not witnessed what he does during blood moons.

I took Toren's growth from fairy-shy traveler to Control Squad Boss to mean that he *did* end up going to her after you left and has been leveling up his gear like you do. I Like the idea that us running his errand (and probably coming back with stronger armor, later) inspires him to do more. I keep checking character names everywhere I go, wondering if I know a particular NPC from somewhere. Granteson, for instance, I'm 99.9999999999% sure is Grante from BOTW, a guy who hangs out on the balcony in Tarreytown and sells you armor (including both snow & sand boots after their quests), so having him build my house made me smile - Grante, do Jerrin & Robbie know you changed your name so you could stay in the weirdo box-house-town to sell build-your-own condos?

Did anyone else notice that out of all the four Champion descendants that help you in BOTW, Teba is the only one who got replaced in TOTK? All the other three became sages, but Teba got stuck being the elder, and some of his dialogue hints at him not even wanting the position. I mean, I get it, Tulin’s cute, I do wonder why Teba couldn’t have a bigger part in TOTK? I also wonder if he’s ever jealous over being the only one who got replaced, or is he glad that he doesn’t have to be the one to fight this time? And we know he’s proud of Tulin, but I’m surprised he’s not stress-preening himself bald from worry. After all, his only son is fighting Ganon, the most dangerous entity in Hyrule (with the possible exception of Link when he’s being played by a sadist).

Considering how he would prefer to have a simple life of simply hunting and taking care of his family. I don't think he would be stoked in the slightest to know he is a sage. He would be responsible and take up the role, but I guess the questline would be somewhat changed as it would involve psyching him up in some way I guess Actually his desire for a simple life and lack of enthusiasm for anything major was probably why it was his son that awoken as a sage, not him. -Maybe after fighting armies with his machine gun bow back in Age of Calamity he thought "man this just isn't for me", despite somehow only being triumphed by a supercharged guardian in gameplay-

At first I was baffled at that picture detail in Zelda’s House…at least until I found out it will recognise the BOTW save data/ Champion’s Ballad DLC after beating that and then Calamity Ganon. So I deleted my TOTK save data/game data, started BOTW again with Zelda’s horse, all Divine Beasts, got master sword, did the trial, completed that, beat the arduous Champion’s Ballad and got the Master Cycle Zero and beat Calamity Ganon. And THEN, I finally got the nice photo Zelda happily kept on the wall for us. I know it would be a pain, it was worth completing all 120 main shrines for the opening to make perfect sense as well. Brilliant.

Even though everyone calls it “Zelda’s house”, I’m pretty sure it’s because link is humble and quiet and doesn’t draw attention to himself. He’s literally always by Zelda’s side and Link can sleep in that bed in the game, which he can only do if he lives somewhere (or an inn). Zelda even writes in her diary (WHICH SHE KEEPS IN THE WELL) that she can’t hide Link’s improved tunic where she is and puts it in the castle likely because he’ll just find it super easily. They absolutely live together.

Actually a bit of Tulin's preview of his future abilities were shown oddly in Age of Calamity's DLC missions Its a mission where you need to find Tulin in the Lots Woods with Revali and Teba, after completing the misssion it's shown that Tulin wants to be a great archer like Revali and his dad and actually has some sort of control over wind like Revali, feat that Revali actually praises for Tuling to to have an inkling of an idea at his young age.
