10 Free Software That Are Actually Great!

Ғылым және технология

For this year’s edition in our “Free Software” series, we made the criteria quite simple. The program must be free of cost with the essential features that people want included free of charge. Every type of free software was considered for this video except for those only offering free trials. To weed out the bad, I will show you 10 free programs in a variety of categories that are actually great! All of these can be installed on Windows computers with some also being available for Linux and Mac.

Sordum Power Run - www.sordum.org/9416/powerrun-v1-3-run-with-highest-privileges/ Drag Everything.exe to Power Run UI, you can open cmd windows, run regedit, drag bat/cmd/reg files to the UI and everything gets Elevated permissions. Very Powerful :). Sordum and Nirsoft are real goldmines for free and very useful programs, i have no financial or otherwise stake in either, im just a home power user :)

I use NextPVR all the time. It's best if you have a TV card. I use it all the time with a Hauppage card and a remote, although the remote needs a little programming to control the program. It's a media player, but also works as a PVR. It can also be used as a backend for a TV card in programs like Kodi. It's greatest strength is as a PVR. It current runs in Windows but they're developing a Linux version.

I mean, doesn't Open-Shell's search feature kinda sorta do the same function? "The start menu can search for programs, settings, files, email, and other documents. In the Classic style you can also register custom search programs (like Agent Ransack of Everything) that let you search for files anywhere on your computer. Also you can register search tools like Google and Bing to search the Internet. Read the documentation for instructions and examples."

I've been using Everything for years. This is a program that has evolved into an incredibly powerful tool. I literally use it every day in one way or another - the more you learn about it the more useful it becomes. Some free software I use that is imo the best, and has consistently been reared as the best or among the best are: 1) OBS It’s not just great for streaming, but also recording your PC to make videos. Lots of customization but is t the easiest to learn. There are variants of this that try to dumb it down, the only drawback being they often loose some advanced functionality. 2) DaVinci Resolve This has been consistently rated as the best free video editing program, and in several rankings even beat out programs that cost as much as $200 US. Very powerful, and actually not terribly difficult to learn. A nice U.I. that makes navigating it easy, and the workflow is easy to understand. 3) Libre office and Open Office Imo the best free alternatives to Microsoft Office. A little dated in the U.I. But very powerful overall. Both work well and are quite powerful in what they are designed to do.

For those wondering Visual Studio Code is not an IDE like Microsoft Visual Studio, it is just a streamlined codeeditor with support for development operations like debugging, task running, and version control. It aims to provide just the tools a developer needs for a quick code-build-debug cycle and leaves more complex workflows to fuller featured IDEs, such asVisual Studio IDE.

All of my software is free. I am reluctant to mess up my Windows registry with another program install when there is a portable version available. For that reason most of my software comes via portableapps.com . As a bonus, they provide a downloader and launcher program and it also can update any of the software it downloaded. Very handy! LibreOffice, Notepad++, Password Safe and BabelMap are the portableapps programs I use most. I do use a few programs from other sources: Palemoon browser and AutoHotKey are the most notable. Oh, and I've used ClassicShell ever since Windows 8. I forget that it's not the native start menu.

ArsClip Clipboard Manager FreeFileSync A File and Folder Sync application that not only can automatically and manually create multiple syncing relationships but can create executable batch files that can be called or scheduled by the OS or other programs. Playnite A very nice and regularly updated universal launcher for game store launchers and game emulators with a pseudo Steam-Like interface. Much further along than GOG Galaxy 2.0 and completely independant of any store so there are no worries about issues of features an integrations being cut off due to worries about the launcher being put out by a competing storefront. ConEmu An Open Source project to unify as much of the command line windows with more features in a tabbed UI that is highly customizable including my favourite feature, a Quake-like drop down Terminal Window. It can't grab as many windows in Windows 8 and 10 that it could before, but hopefully it is on the roadmap as I would love to use it to manage some of the game servers I admin. FileListCreator This makes a text list of files or a filtered subset of files based on what you want output, and boy is it fast and good at what it does. For example I admin several servers that are modded of the game ARK:Survival Evolved. In that game as you advance you get points to spend on the ability to learn how to make new things, like a rifle or a set of SCUBA flippers. These are called "Engrams" and some mods add or modify them. Also they may require you have one or several other previous "Engrams" before you can take it. As an admin you may have to remove or alter one of these engrams, and the game uses the Unreal Engine so every separate is a file, and it name always starts with "EngramEntry". Looking for them using Windows Search, Windows Exploerer, or Everything is a pain. With FileListCreator I simply drag the folder that I know it is in, then tell it to filter by "EngramEntry" and it will show every one in that folder. I then can put them in whatever order I want, tell it to add or remove info on those files, save those settings and any time I have those settings on, any folder I drag onto it will instantly make the list. I then can save that list as a file for later use or cut and paste info straight from the interface.

I like a program called "the file splitter" 1.31.. it's been around a long time but works great if you want to break down bigger files and store on a data dvd, etc.. then when you want use them again, the program puts them back together to original large file.. It don't do folders, but if you convert them with 7zip first it will :o)

Belarc should be on this list. Tells you everything about your computer's hardware, (extremely useful if you buy a prebuilt system), about your motherboard, (model #, serial #, Firmware version and date). How much RAM, lists all your drives and manufacturer. Shows if your Windows Update security and Antivirus is up to date. Downloads the newest Windows Defender definitions. Tells you about your what's on your home network, your IP address, etc. Way more info about your computer than you'll ever need, lol.
