10 FPV Trends That DIED

Ойын-сауық

Throughout the long and storied history of FPV, there have been many trends that everyone just HAD to do... until they didn't anymore. DRib and Bardwell cover 10 trends that went the way of the dodo... and have a few more hot takes of their own on which trends they think should die next.

    @@synkopa Why does everyone keep talking about the latency still? I went from flying with fatsharks for almost 3 years, and now the DJI stuff for the past month - the only latency is the number you see in the goggles, there isn't any thats noticable, and based on RC Shims latest tests, the actual difference is about 5ms, when using top of the line fatshark hdo2's with rapidfire, and ratel camera. If your analog gear is inferior to that, the latency ends up being more than digital. People forget that analog has latency too, you just don't have the ability to see it in your goggles, so nobody mentions it. Anyone that says they can feel the difference is full of it, or is finding some reason that doesn't exist to hate it. I've been hating on the DJI stuff for over a year, but now that I fly it, I can't ever go back to analog. Don't try it unless you can afford it, thats my advice to everyone. Analog is just fine, and I suggest folks stick with it until the price goes down and DJI has some competition.

    I don't know if it was just a thing in german fpv forums, but back in 2013 or 2014, some people were building camera mounts that could tilt up and down with a servo! They first tried using it as some sort of a built-in gimbal, but quickly found out that they then don't see how the quad is pitched. So they just changed it so that they can adjust it with the transmitter. So they could turn the camera up to go faster and then turn it downwards for an easy landing. That mini-trend died pretty quickly though, as it used a lot of space and weight on the quad and you couldn't just buy it, you had to build it all yourself.

    No... you must watch me make coffee, or go get a coffee on an electric skateboardy thingy, and then watch me endanger people on the roads while I yammer on about my mood lately in the driver's seat of a moving car, making disturbingly prolonged eye contact with a lens held at arms length. That covers the first 20 minutes. Next we're going to watch me stage a received phone call to arrange a meet with another KZreadr at a "bando" prior to my arriving at a solo warm-up spot to setup a tripod so you can bear witness to my pulling up to said spot a second time, cause Neistat. After another 10 minutes of complaining about gear and being excited about the bando, we're going to show 1m29s of low energy "freestyle", cause we don't want to break anything before the big bando meet. Also I don't actually care about drones, but it's my way "in"; (as in "INfluencer"). Another 10 minutes whingeing on the road and another staged arrival will bring us to the main event, where I get to moan in person to the guy we're all already tired of, from the phone call earlier. After another 5-10 minutes of "bro bruh bro" talk and feigned paranoia about "security", that's right... another 1m29s of sweet sweet slightly faster freestyle, this time with a more energetic song selection from KZread's acceptable catalog of tired ad-friendly modern musak. Then we'll close it all down with a 3 minute outro involving belligerent, obtrusive camera work during semi-drunken dinner time while psychologically abusing the wait staff in a "rando" ethnic eatery with some e-begging thrown in for good measure. There's the formula... don't abuse it! Or I mean abuse it, a lot. Like every single time. The loudest voice in my head happens to be a crass cynic, yet I still watch this crap like an addict. My reflections are surely a bit funhouse, I'm aware.

    I worked on F-14's in the Navy. The engines in that plane weren't soft mounted, but the IMU (Inertial Measuring Unit / gyro) was soft mounted...... that's definitely the way to go.

  • @user-zi8jn1go8k

    @user-zi8jn1go8k

    Жыл бұрын

    The thing is, soft-mounting needs some mass to be effective. Some things don't scale linearly, the mass goes down with size^3 so while it's fine to soft-mount the big & heavy IMU of a fighter jet but on a drone the flight controller might just not have enough mass on its own to be effectively soft-mounted. Not saying soft-mounted motors are the solution, but there is some justification to it.

    Not everyone can afford to go digital, obviously... This hobby took me into many other different hobbies that are hard on the wallet... My first quad was one that I built myself and I still have it, then 3d printing got thrown into the mix, and I was already building my own computers so I have a pretty awesome PC for running drone simulations... Its fun but anyone that says its an easy hobby to get into is a liar, because you have to have knowledge of many different sub-hobbies it can be pretty frustrating. Money can be an issue under this load of hobbies too obviously... I would love to be able to meet the rotor riot team and fly with them... I live my life in constant pain but when I fly its the only time I feel nothing at all, but the exhilarating sensation of flight that I dreamed of when I was a young child and im also a recovering addict so I hope this is never taken away from me... Almost 2 years clean and my biggest fear is the FAA fucking with me... Flying is my Sanctuary!

    I recently re-entered the hobby after a few years (had kids, didn't have time to tinker with FPV). I resurrected my old QAV250 and it literally had some of these trends! It has the slots on the top plate to angle a board camera (but I use a camera mount), it has a PDB board as a bottom plate (seems to be fairly durable though after many crashes) and I just removed the camera couch for my old Hero3 Black because that camera died and I bought a runcam 5 so I now have a new 3D printed mount for it. I also toned down the camera angle. Back in the day I remember super-high camera angles as being "the thing" but now it seems like around 20 degrees is more reasonable. I still have some of those glass fibre props so I'm going to use those up (probably in a flight or two) and then replace them with modern more durable props. I'd love to upgrade the VTX and goggles to digital but it's so expensive! My FatSharks do suck and my FPV camera is worse but they work. I'll replace them when they break.

    After 2, each extra blade experiences diminishing returns, theyre spinning in the slipstream of eachother. The sweet spot is between 2 and 4 i think. (For quad size props, different craft that are larger or smaller have different sweet spots. 3d fpv needs the same camera width as your eyes to see proper depth of field. Its doable on larger quads but smaller ones its a nightmare to set up. You can do it with optics too, mirrors and a small tube to the ends of the front motor mounts, but its not really worth the complexity. One trend that needs to come back is collective pitch quads. They have so much potential and they haven't been done much at ALL.

What will make it cheaper is not needing expensive focals/optics and all the stuff that's needed for them. You can also take out all HDMI in/out electronics.
