I would like to suggest that if you shy away from using some pens because they hold too much ink you could partially fill them. That also works with cartridges and converters. i frequently do this if I want a more 'in hand' feel for the inks I am testing; dip pens don't always tell the whole story about an ink.

That's a good point, Bill. Then I would still have the option to do a full fill if the need ever arose. Have you ever had the ink perform differently when you did a partial fill, such as it becoming more saturated because it's exposed to more air in the ink chamber?

@@gadgetstop321 just partially fill the barrel and position the piston so it contracts the volume to only the amount of ink you have in the barrel. Then, it’s no different than if you filled it full. Hope that makes sense. ? The beauty of piston fillers is the flexibility you have with the ink volume.

    1. TWSBI Mini with anodized aluminum section 2. Otto Tasche 3. Kaweco Liliput in aluminum 4. Sailor Pro Gear Slim with F nib 5. Platinum 3776 with F nib 6. Moonman M800 7. Kaweco Perkeo 8. Monteverde Poquito (misnamed Perkeo in the video) 9. Jinhao x750 with matte black finish 10. Bexley Sleeve Filler 11. Pilot Metropolitan Cathy, even though my preferences differ pretty widely from yours, I always enjoy your take on what you like (or not) in a pen. I have 7 of the 11 pens in your list, and here is my own take, given my preference for pocket pens with heft: 1. TWSBI mini - I love my 2 AL minis - one in silver and the other in mint. Both have stub nibs and I tend to use them with shimmer inks. I don’t fill it completely if I plan on switching inks sooner rather than later. 2. Otto Tasche - nice little pocket/planner pen. I don’t have any issues with slipperiness and enjoy the ease of the snap cap. Steady, basic performer. 3. Liliput - I have this in steel (which my husband turned into a fire blue) and copper. Perfect heft in these metals. I don’t love fiddling with the screw cap to open and post. 4. Kaweco Perkeo - Not a bad little pen, but I agree with you here - just not a fan of plastic pens in general. 5. Monteverde Poquito - pretty tiny! And, yes, it is slippery. I love the way it looks, but I don’t use it. 6. Jinhao X750 - I replaced the nibs with Goulet stub nibs. Sweet writer, but too large for me to use it for long. I never noticed an issue with posting because it’s too big and heavy for me to want to post it. 7. Pilot Metropolitan - I purchased one recently with a stub nib and was very impressed with the performance at that price point! No issues at all with hard starting, but it hasn’t gotten a lot of use. You mentioned two other pens that I also have in my collection: Ritma pocket pen. I don’t remember specific issues (it has been a while), but I was quite disappointed in this promising pen. I paired it with Monteverde Olivine ink and just found it a struggle to write with. I’ll give it another try before making up my mind. Conklin Minigraph - so tiny! I found the section impossible to grip comfortably and I like small pens. I consider this pen one of my worst purchases. 😂 Thank you again for this video and also for the previous one with the pens that made the “buy again” list.

Thank you, Janis! I should have mentioned that the only ink I've found that works properly in my pocket Ritma is Diamine Earl Grey. Everything else hard starts. I also tried Monteverde Olivine because, hey, it's a Monteverde ink, it should work in a Monteverde pen, but nope. I suppose it's not rational, but I still love the pocket Ritma (and I'm always on the lookout for other inks that will work with it).

Love this! I also like that you show which pens have replaced the pens you would not repurchase. Something that few other people mention but I've realized over time is that I prefer snap caps. I compulsively re-cap my pens (even for short pauses of thinking) which makes the screw caps bothersome if I can have a pen with snap cap.

Happy Sunday to you too! And I know what you mean about the Prera. When I first unboxed mine I was a little disappointed with how light weight it was. I think I equated its lack of weight with being fragile, but it has held up well over time and I got used to it. Which makes me wonder why I can't get used to the Liliput. I guess I like my metal pens to have some density. 🤷

There is an element of eye-candy about a lot of modern pens, having such a wide variety of styles and materials these days. As you point out though, the important thing is about the feel of the pen in your hand, and the way it writes. Have you thought about trying some vintage pens?

That is a good point about the aluminum Twisbi mini. I love the Twisbi Rose Gold mini, it's one of my all time favorite pens. Mine has an EF nib. 1. I love reviews like this chock full of well-expressed opinions, thanks. 2. It's completely insane how many slippery pens are made. Think, people! 3. This is a useful thought experiment to reveal how one's tastes have changed, or, better yet, become more focussed. Real pen & ink artists work almost exclusively with extra fine and flex nibs. It's been a learning process for me to get to a similar point, so were I to start over, I would try not to buy so many lucscious medium and larger nibs that are so delightful in hand but not actually that useful for the task at hand.

I agree with you in regards to liking pens with smaller ink capacities so you can stitch out inks frequently, but you don't have to fill piston pens up all the way. I never fill up my piston pens all the way, it's pretty easy to control how much ink you put in the pen.

Thanks for the great work. For the Pilot Metropolitan, here in Canada, they sell the section with nib, feed and a Con-B convereter for around $10 CAD (roughly $7.50 US). I purchased a several in F, M, CM to swap out the nibs in my Explorer, Prera as well as well as a replacement unit for my Metropolitan. Some of the chinese pens like Wing Sung also use the same nib. I've seen them at Blesket and Wonderpens in the Toronto area and Stylo out in Quebec. I am not sure whether this is a Canadian exclusive, but I don't remember seeing this on any website in the US... Shipping may be an issue, but if you pair it with something else, I think it's worth it getting a couple.

This was great Cathy! Thank you soo much. I'm with you on the slippery sections, uhhg! My first fountain pen was given to me in the 90s by my father, but I pretty much hate using it because of the section! It's a limited edition Pelikan from that time period and I like the nib enough as well as the body and color, but it about slips out of my grip if I write more than a few sentences! So it's a pen I keep out of sentiment only... 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @jamesaritchie1

Try putting a thin strip of double-sided carpet tape around the section. Two strips, if it has a long section. This is a good way to still use a sentimental favorite that has a slippery grip.

I purchased the lovely white/rose gold diamond mini and it is one of my faves. I syringe fill it and often use less than full volume. Just twist the plunger to expel excess air so the barrel capacity matches how much ink you have in the barrel. The grip is not slippery and the medium nib and stub nibs from Twsbi are SMOOTH! I swap them out as my mood dictates. But! Big note: not sure TWSBI offers replacement nibs in Rose Gold yet. So, a replacement nib won’t match, but I haven’t let that get in my way!! You know, my fingertips must be bad. I have no clue how plastic "feels" cheap unless it bends or squishes. Really, you aren't even feeling the plastic, you're feeling the coating, and it's thye same coating used on much more expensive pens.

  • @MummyBrown

@@jamesaritchie1 The Faber Castell Grip feels very light and not very substantial. It’s weighted like a cheap toy. Since it’s a stub nib, it has a certain angle it needs to be held in to get a proper line down with it. The lack of weight somehow makes it a little more difficult. It’s like a Kaweco Sport vs a Lamy Safari. The Kaweco sport is a little too light, but the Safari has a little more weight to it. It’s more than likely just my preference. I tend to really like metal pens or those heavier acrylic pens so it could just be me.

@@jamesaritchie1 The plastic on the Perkeo doesn't have a coating. It's just colored plastic. It feels like a cheap plastic toy...the kind you might find at a Dollar Store, for example. And...if I squeezed it a bit or tightened the cap a little firmly, I seriously think it would bend and crack. It's difficult to write with because, even with the weight of the ink, it's just uncomfortably lightweight.

I don't have many good things to say about Kaweco in general for their inconsistent QC, fishy business practices, and the low-quality materials used in their lower-end pens. I had two gateway pens when I was seven. A Parker Duofold Button Filler, and a Conklin Crescent Filler from about 1912. Now I have gold nib pens ranging from a hundred and twenty-five dollars all the way up to a street price of twelve-thousand-dollars. My three daily carry, take anywhere and everywhere pens are the Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, the Scribo Feel, and the Kaweco Brass Sport with a gold nib, which cost a paltry two hundred and forty dollars. But I probably own twenty Metropolitans and I do use them a lot. I use them primarily as art pens, but I also love the way they write, and there are very, very few pens with steel nibs that I can say this about. I do like TWSBI nibs. Probably too much because by the time the Covid lockdown was finished I had twenty-eight of them, but that's about it. I think the Metropolitan is far, far more than a gateway pen.

Definitely pull the trigger on a Sailor 14k MF nib. My main pen is a black Sailor 1911s with a 14k MF nib. I like how the MF nib allows for some color variation along the stroke. I use a pigment based blue-black, too, and I've never had trouble with nib clogging/cleaning. I have a Sailor 1911 Compass with a steel MF nib, which writes finer than the 14k gold MF (INSANELY good pen for $40!). My new Sailor Pro Gear slim with a 14k MF nib is due to arrive today, so I'm a big fan of these nibs.

The pen I have difficulty holding onto sometimes is my Kaweco AL Sport in Golden Espresso. I don’t regret purchasing it, but I cannot always hold onto it very well; maybe it’s my arthritis problems. The pen(s) I wouldn’t buy again would be 1) ANY Conklin because they are such ink starved pens! They were the first purchases, but I definitely wouldn’t repurchase; 2) Jinhao X750 because it’s been problematic in keeping either a cartridge or converter stay on it; 3) a Maiora pen - unsure of the model - but it dries out quickly and doesn’t write well. Definitely wasn’t worth its price; 4) TWSBI Go - I just hated that pen and gave it away; 5) Diplomat Aero, only because I have difficulty holding onto it. These were easy for me to think of. There might be more, but these would be the definitive first five that I wouldn’t repurchase or replace.

How do you feel about TSWBi Mini Vac? About large capacity -- I do not really understand the argument -- you can always fill it half or only a quarter. If you take your pen somewhere and do not want to fill it away from your desk, fill it up with more ink than any cartridgeconverter... I tend to favor the cheaper TWSBIs since the cap broke where the clip is mounted of my 580ALR.

Regarding your Sailor Pro-gear and its f nib, would you be willing to replace the nib with a different size or style of nib, rather than ditching the entire pen? Lots of people change nibs, and they are widely available from several dealers. Contact one you trust, and ask them what would work in your Sailor. They may even take your gold nib in trade. As Hannah Horowitz, creator of the advice column "So Help Me,Hannah", an expert on disappointment, buyer's remorse, and gold will tell you this: "The worst they can say is 'no'. Well, the worst could be 'hell no!' but that's just the same as no, when you consider." She's right, of course. That Mrs. Horowitz is always right.

It is interesting how tastes change and become more refined. Part of that may be because the primary uses of my pens have changed (less work/more leisure). My Bexley nib does have tipping that has been ground into a stub.

You can email Philip at TWSBI and for the cost of shipping he will send you a plastic section. Also,. I don't understand the beef with a large ink capacity. All it gives you is the OPTION of a full full. Just put a little ink in it. They are so easy to clean--no more difficult than a converter.

Well, I agree about how much ink to put in, but I find they are much harder to clean than a cartridge/converter pen. Not crazy hard, but using a bulb syringe I can clean a cartridge/converter pen in fifteen to twenty seconds. This just can't be done with a piston filler. Depending on the ink, it takes me at least five minutes to clean a TWSBI. Often ten to fifteen minutes.

I like my 1911 with a medium nib, but I think the medium-fine on the Slim Mini is my favorite. Since they're both gold colored I should be able to swap them out. 😀

I find TWSBI pens easy to clean, and you don't have to fill one all the way up. I go through a TWSBI fill in three days or less, but I have friends who just don't fill the pen all the way up unless they have an ink they know they want to use for weeks. I don't find the anodized grip at all slippery, and I think I know why. Smooth, metal grips used to give me problems, so I would put a thin strip of carpet tape around them, and it worked well on most pens, assuming there was enough room between the cape and the grip to let the tape pass. Then I switched to Lava hand soap because I love the way it gets fountain pen ink off my hands.. The old Lava that has no oils in it. Now those same metal grips are not slippery at all. I have no hard evidence that hand lotion or soaps were oils in them makes grips slipperier, but my fountain pen group seems to bear this out. As for Kaweco, I greatly prefer the Brass Sport with a gold nib, though even the steel nib is fun. I have pens that are many, many, many times more expensive, but the Brass Sport is one of my favorites. I don't buy ANY Chinese pens because I think they all have blood on them, if indirectly. Some of the money goes to the government, which uses it to buy weapons and bullets they use to commit genocide. And to build thousands of nuclear weapons, and many other horrible human rights violations, but I have had to test a LOT of Chinese pens. Now, truthfully, they're all junk. Even the "brass" in a 750 doesn't quality as brass by western standards, and their "resin" and acrylic" are just cheap plastic they make look expensive. Even most of their pens that are supposed to have a lacquer finish do not. The finish is actually extremely thin, but pretty strong, shrink wrap plastic. The nibs and tipping are both made from the same very low-grade stainless steel, on and on. But I guess it's hard to expect more when many of them, such as the 750, cost under a dollar to make. Others cost even less. So I buy as few Chinese products as possible, and never fountain pens or ink. I'd hate to know I helped fund a Taiwan invasion, or even WWIII. India has too many pens that are far better made, and that won't fund these things. It's funny, but in many years of repairing pens, I have never seen baby's bottom on a stub nib. As for the Metropolitan, I think it's just wrong to not buy another pen because one has a problem. By that rule you could lose out on pens that cost many thousands of dollars. There will ALWAYS be lemons. My most expensive lemon was seven hundred dollars, but the company hastily replaced it with a perfect pen. I have friends who have had lemons that cost much, much, much more. Anyway, I have eight Metropolitans that I use as art pens, and they get a LOT of use, and frequently get thrown into a bag and clank against each other nearly all day. I've beat them to death for years without a single problem. I will say that of the Pilot means you mentioned that have the same nib as the Metro, the nibs are similar, but not necessarily the same where quality is concerned. The Kakuno has the reputation of having the smoothest, most reliable nib of the bunch, and I've certainly found it so. Most of my Metros are wearing Kakuno nibs, and they are amazing.
