I owned a 1971 Plymouth Duster (a good car, but not great) and a 1979 Olds Cutlass Supreme (an excellent car), and a 1996 Mercury Mystique (a crappy car). You didn’t show Pontiac, another extinct brand, but I also had a 1988 Pontiac Bonneville SSE (It was also excellent). The Cutlass and the Bonneville both had GM’s excellent 3.8L V6 engine. Sold the Cutlass at 95,000 miles and still looked new, then bought the Bonneville. The Bonny lasted over 160,000 miles. I gave it to my teenage son at 115,000 miles and he put another 45,000 on it. Would have kept it longer, but he wrecked it and it wasn’t worth repairing, so donated it to Salvation Army.

The GM, Ford and Chrysler heirarchy by cost and market target. GM- Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevrolet Ford- Continental, Lincoln Mercury, Ford. Chrysler- Imperial, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodgeas My father was an Olds man. He was a country doctor and needed reliable transportation because the nearest hospitals were fifteen miles away. The first car that I remember was a 1948 Olds Rocket 88 fastback coupe .He then bought a white over navy blue 54 Olds 98, followed by a 1956 white over tourquoise Olds Holiday, then a 1959 old 89 charcoal in color, then a white 1961 Old. 89, a 1962 metallic pink Starfire ( he was going through his mod-life crisis) andmy favorite a1965 Olds 88 with a huge engine..In 1969 he switched to Buicks and his last car was an 1985 Chevy . I and my family (3 daughters) have driven all of the GM cars except Cadillac, many Ford cars and trucksincludin three Mustangs, and one Mercury, a Chrysler New Yorker, Chrysler Imperial, and Dodge Van, as well as foreign cars, an Opel 1800, two Kia Souls, and a Mitsubishi.

Cocaine in the financial details... Not a good video overall. A PowerPoint production is thicker than a tweet. My mother had a 1950 Packard the Police stole for some guy my mother refused to sell to. I came home from school and it was gone and she reported it stolen in a week later told it was at impound. They pulled it out of her parking space four times and we were poor and she couldn't get it out anymore. I found it at the corner of gas station and grab the mail. I had taken the cigarette lighter to the speedometer when I was a kid so I had my mark on it, it was a 1950 with the new automatic transmission and he had some paper that said it was a 1949 and it was his. They stole my car I waited three lifetimes since I was 5 to drive. Seemingly that is how many in America get ahead. Yachts rust away and Jesus forgives but I'll never forget, any recovery from the economic damage, throughout my life, my hands cut off repeatedly, My, since I was 2 or 3, Long base (floor to play on in the back) 1950 Straight 8 Packard Tank, Boomy Bass AM Radio with rich thick harmonics, vacume powered windshield wipers stuggeled up steep hills, OD green. The Fashionable Colur of the Year, post-war. I am 64 noŵ. The Hourglass of time. I have lived 13 lifetimes since I was five, 5 being one lifetime in my calculation. Life is short. And I loved my Packard.

Every brand my mom had went "extinct." AMC Gremlin, Mercury Zephyr, Datsun 510 or 710 wagon, Pontiac Grand Prix, then Oldsmobile Aurora. Oh she LOVED that Aurora. She has a Buick Lucerne right now. At this rate, Buick better watch out LOL!!!!! An old lady around town here still cruises around in her long-passed-away husband's 1939 Plymouth coupe. She's really shy when asked about it. I'm curious who maintains it because it's in beautiful condition.

I told her *_DON'T DO IT!!!!_* "Cuteness" is only skin-deep. And I think those have Renault engines that nobody in The States is gonna touch. I'd rather see her get like an HRV, CX-5, Corolla Cross even. I had to tell her Nissan isn't what they used to be in the 90s, and she still thought I had no idea what I was talking about...

You didn't mention Studebaker. I drove a 1976 Oldsmobile, a 1948 DeSoto, a 1970 Plymouth Duster, and I believe a couple of others. All the cars you listed, except for the DeLorean, were rather common in the early sixties. The 1964 Mercury was one of my favorites. In had a top that was 'straight' in the rear, unlike the Thunderbird, that had a top that was sloped in the rear. One thing about cars of that era. One could tell the make and year of the vehicle from several hundred miles away, unlike many of the vehicles of today when one can't tell which car is which until they are close enough to see the logo.

I'm still driving my '97 Saturn SW2, still looks new except where in parking lots other drivers have deposited foreign paint upon its corners, great mileage, it never stranded me and it's never been in the shop. It's needed new tires once, a new battery once and once a year it gets new oil. It was my first new car purchase and I remember at the time wondering if it would be my last and that sure looks like it might come true. Yes, I'm pretty happy with it.

I guess I've been plagued by purchasing cars whose makers couldn't compete. My dad owned a 1946 DeSoto, the first car I learned to drive, I then bought a Nash Rambler, an American Motors Gremlin, and when kids came along, a Plymouth Station Wagon ( the one that rusted and lost body parts as you drove, including the radio antenna and the front fender reflectors, and eventually the passenger floor boards (replaced with plywood)), a 1992 Olds 98 (which made many trips from Ohio to Florida Universities where sometime during those journeys required two front end replacements, three complete brake job replacements, one complete paint job. I sold it with the sky roof rusted shut) and finally in 1993 I bought a Demo Saturn SC (after 23,000 miles an 2 yrs the engine siezed while being serviced at a GM dealer). I now have a top-of-the-line 2008 Mazda 6, with nearly 100,000 miles and no except normal maintenance (and as expected Mazda doesn't make this model anymore)

I am surprised you did not mention Studebaker, other than as the merger partner of Packard. They started out as a wagon and stagecoach builder, but exited the automobile manufacturing business not long after the merger. They were unable to complete with the GM-Ford price wars of the 1960's. One of their product lines that survives today is STP.

The engine sounded like a sewing machine. The Nash looked like a upside down bathtub. It had a thermostatic controled heating system and a Packard Interceptor engine. Bought it in high school in 1984, sold it to a friend in 1986 (and regretted it immediately), bought it BACK from him in 2014, 30-years and the same month as the first time. Still runs and drives, fast as heck and have collected a lot of new and old parts for restoration which I'm hoping to start in a couple of years. Since I'll never part with it again the family joke is that I'll be buried in it.

Owned Oldsmobile,Pontiac, and Saturn. I had 4 Oldsmobile Cutlasses 1993 Saturn SW3 wagon and the Pontiac Bonneville spanning from 1969 to 2000. Grew up an Oldsmobile fan. Saturn was a unique car company. NO PRICE HAGGLING. Service was very good. I really wanted Saturn to succeed, but GM starting to cut corners. Saturn was their big baby to fight the small car imports. That was one of the vehicles I had fun driving. I had 4 Oldsmobile cutlasses. 1969, 1974, 1976 and 1985. 1969 was the best Cutlass I’ve owned . 1974 Cutlass Supreme was the worst. 76 was the most sportiest (442 appearance and handling packaged). My 85 Cutlass Salon was the best handling. The 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SLE was the sportiest sedan with good handling and comfort. After 2000, I’ve owned 4 Subaru’s and a Hyundai ELECTRIC VEHICLE. I was loyal to GM from 1969 - 2000. GM was not loyal to me. That’s why I decided to own imports.😩

I feel old, I've had a car from a manufacturer on this list. My Mercury Sable had a cool feature I've not had on any car since: it had dual visors. So you could pop one visor onto the side window, and then pull a second one down for the windshield. Great for when you're making turns and the sun keeps "moving" back and forth between the two windows. Another manufacturer that should be on the list is Pontiac. My first car was a Grand Prix.

You missed the AMC Javelin. It was a really sporty car with some good guts. One of the things that helped the DeSoto to die out was that it was the Chrysler "test car." New ideas were tried out on the DeSoto and if it worked out it would be used on the Chrysler. The last thing that was tried on the DeSoto was to change the wiring to all copper wiring. Didn't work out and the electrical problems killed it for sure. My dad owned a 51 or 2 DeSoto. I remember the hood ornament that lit up when the headlights were on. Mercury was a good car with a good engine. Many times when someone was rebuilding their Ford engine they'd get high compression Mercury heads. They seemed to be better for power. My brother had a 52 Mercury Montclair. It was a really nice car and I liked it a lot. What happened is he was in the Navy and sending money home to my mother to take to the bank for him to pay for the car and she was using for other things. Only a single mention of the Studebaker? Studebaker manufactured horse-drawn wagons even up to when it was manufacturing cars. Studebaker's designs in the 50s were way ahead of their times. They were also one of the first to introduce 4-speed manual transmission for their cars. Almost bought a 55 Studebaker Hawk with a the 4-speed manual on the floor. It was quite the runner with the huge engine it had. Don't be so glib about the Plymouth. I had a 59 Sport Fury. It was a really great car. Good engine with good power. One thing I really liked about it is the swing-out front bucket seats. They were really convenient to get in and out. I wonder why they were discontinued? Sadly, it had a difficult time competing with Ford and Chevy. I recall racing a Ford 312 cid with my 318 cid and taking it. I had a Saturn as well. It had a really good engine that got quite good gas mileage on the road. But in town, it was a bit off. It was a really sporty 5-speed that could cruise nicely at 70 on the freeways at 38 or so MPG. Where's Pontiac? The Bonneville was quite the top of the line car. And just can't forget about the GTO. It's still a sought after car. My dad had a couple of Pontiacs. It had a hood ornament that lit up like the DeSoto as well.

I still own a '96 Plymouth Breeze. And, I also own another orphaned brand that you didn't mention. Also in my driveway is a '58 Edsel Corsair. And, here's a fun fact about Packard. Although their sales were starting to decline in the early '50s, they were still in strong financial shape until they bought Studebaker. Studebaker was in a horrible financial shape, and they hid that fact from the Packard personnel until after the buyout. (I know that most people call it a merger, but it was actually a buyout by Packard.) Packard wanted Studebaker for two reasons. 1) They wanted to diversify their lineup. 2) They wanted access to Studebaker's dealer network, which was larger than Packard's. Unfortunately, Studebaker's sad financial shape did nothing bu completely doom Packard.

There are 250% MORE American car brands that no longer exist than the one's that exist...Duesenberg, Marmon, Fisher (pre-Chevrolet), Fleetwood (yup BEFORE Cadillac), Duryea, Cord, Auburn, Franklin, Essex, Detroit Electric (DELCO), the list goes on...
