    These training sets were cute as can be, and smart, too. This is exactly how you train any intelligent animal. It's how I trained my rescue dogs. Break every task down into simple, single tasks and put them together one at a time sequentially. Entice, don't try to force, and learn to recognize when the animal is getting bored or frustrated, and give them a rest and some play time. Patience, lots of repetition, and plenty of love and praise. When you work this way with animals, the sky's the limit for what you can do together, provided you're patient with them, and committed to making it fun and interesting for the animal first. Congrats! These are great videos. 💚

    Awesome video! I can't wait till I can teach my rats these tricks! It's been a little difficult to even teach the beginner tricks, as we had to spend so much time trust training. (They hadn't been handled by humans before I got them, and Tria was already 3 months old when I got her and full grown, Queen 2, Brier 1), but I hope someday to teach them amazing tricks like these!

    Fantastic videos for showing how to train your pet rats 🐀 to do tricks. I was at a rat show yesterday with 6 of my boys. Three of my boys was in the pets class and when the judges came to judge my boys 2 of them Nepti and Rio brought themselves out of the show tank and impressed the judges Nepti interacted with the judge and his surroundings and even was as happy to sit with the judge as well as exploring the table. Rio his brother took himself out of the show tank performed acrobatics 4 the judge and he was very alert, active loved 2 explore and he was very interactive with the judge. Stuart was more wary when he came out of the show tank once out and on the judge he relaxed after that he did have an explore of his surroundings and then they put him back into his show tank. Despite that he was the fastest rat in the curiosity challenge and came 1st with a time of 0:33:31. They were amazed how fast he was at the challenge despite him being a big rat. I just wanted to share this with you. All my 5 boys did well especially in pets. Nepti did ever so well in the different challenges that are held at the show each different section that the rat's are judge on according to the rat clubs rules. Nepti got reserved best pet, Rio was in 3rd position for best pet and Stuart got 5th position in the pets class. I did not do well in varieties I got a 2nd and Pinky did not get placed. Despite that I'm proud of all my boys and I love them all to bits. Thanks again for your wonderful and fantastic videos. Take care from Amanda and the pets 🐭😊.

  • @ShadowTheRat

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yup all these tricks can be taught to mice, and really any capable animal can learn them. Mice and rats are a bite special rodent wise though because they seem to catch on faster - I think part of it is because they're very social animals, and so have more incentive to work with you then lets say a hamster.

  • @ShadowTheRat

    I've always found he Cheerios and Gerber puffs broken into 2-4 pieces each work best. But any small treat that takes under 5 seconds for the rat to eat would work. I also use meat baby food when I want to give the rat extra motivation, as hey adore the stuff and will do anything for it.

    You are very talented with rats!! I have a question have any of your rats bit you?

  • @ShadowTheRat

    @ShadowTheRat

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes - I've had a genetically agressive rat (one of the black hooded rats seen here called Blackberry) and she bit me quite a bit. I worked with her a lot and she stopped biting outside the cage after a few months, and a bit after that also stopped for the most part inside the cage, but unlike most rats she was never fully bombproof biting wise and she definitely did not have a great pet temperament. She was a very smart rat though, and a lot of fun to train. That's mainly how we bonded - she was pretty indifferent about people (despite the biting) and trick training was a safe and fun way to interact with her. She was very talented at backwards tricks and loved to learn new behaviors all the time. I've also been bitten by other rats but those bites were never intentional and so I don't count them. They either happened when the rat was in immense pain or they happened with new rats when I didn't let them know when to stop nibbling (I'm pretty confident with them nibbling me so I've had a few times when I accidentally let it go too far - this mainly happens with rats with little to no human contact and is super easy to prevent if you just wiggle your hand to tell them when it starts to hurt). Overall I've found that even rats from pet stores like Blackberry that come from terrible pet mills still tend to be very friendly and never bite, but occasionally you do get that rat like Blackberry due to this breeding without regard to temperament and so the best way to avoid this is getting rats from a good source like an ethical breeder

    I suppose that's one way to see it - another way however would be to say that the more you practice something the better you get at it and the more you grow to enjoy it, to the point that you need less external motivation to do so because your internal motivation to do it is so heightened. Kinda a glass half full vs a glass half empty sort of way of looking at things 😉

  • @ShadowTheRat

    @ShadowTheRat

    3 жыл бұрын

    A lot of early training will be pretty unfocused and all over the place because rats are just very hyperactive animals. They will gain focus, but it takes time and experience for them to build it up. The best way I’ve found to start building focus and training is to set everything up for success first. You want to first make sure that the environment you train in is familiar to them - I usually use the playpen I free-range my rats in, and I’ll have tons of houses and hides so that if they get spooked they have many bolt holes (which really boosts their confidence). Make sure that you really give them time to adjust to an area, and that you set them up for success with lots of hides and bolt holes, and ideally cage access as well. This adjustment process can take days or longer, and during this time just offer them treats whenever they approach you (use high value liquid treats like plain yogurt or meat baby food, so that they don't have to chew them and can't run off with them). Only once they are confident in the training area do you want to start actual training. Another thing you want to work on is the lure alone - a lot of people skip this but it’s so helpful to train it as it’s own behavior. To do this you can take a liquid treat or a bunch of small solid treats and show them to your rat. Let them eat a bit and then start moving your hand forwards while still letting them eat. Do this a few times, then start to hold the treat out of reach for a step or two before rewarding. Build this up to 2-3 steps before rewarding, then 3-4 steps, then 4-5 steps, and so forth, always varying how many steps you lure them before rewarding and working up to a consistent 5-10 steps each time. Once they have the lure down then you want to work on some of the easier body manipulation tricks. These will be things like spin, paw, jump to hand, backup, etc. Don’t work on complex tricks like fetch at first since your rats first need to build their confidence and focus with easy tricks before switching to multi-step ones. I usually teach spin or paw first, and in both cases you want to fade the lure as soon as possible. Each time you repeat the motion of luring your rat into a spin or paw you want to try and use it less and less - try not to get stuck on the luring step by overdoing it. Even if you do all this though at first it’s likely that your rats will run off ever so often at first. They really do have to build that confidence and focus with training and this is another reason you want to start by working on behaviors that can be picked up whenever they give you a few seconds of attention. Over time they will gain more experience and skills and they will learn to stick around and focus. Once they know about 5-7 tricks in my experience that’s when you start to see a greater focus and can move to harder tricks. Finally I have a video here going over how to start out training - again I would focus on easier tricks like spin, paw, jump to hand, etc. first to build their confidence and focus before moving to any harder tricks: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gWx62bWYm7ynntI.html

  • @ShadowTheRat

    Finger skateboards are too small for rats - even the wheels of this one are from a 10 inch skateboard (which itself was too slippery and poorly shaped for the rats to use). You might be able to use a few finger skateboards taped onto a cardboard piece in order to make a workable rat one, or do something similar to what I did and use wheels from a slightly larger toy hot glued onto cardboard to make one.

    Unless its a prerequisite tricks (such as backing up on cue being a prerequisite trick for teaching a wall handstand) then no, you don't have to teach tricks in any specific order. With that being said I highly suggest working on the easy tricks first simply because when you start training the rats don't know what you want and if you jump right into complex tricks chances are they will be confused and frustrated (as will you as the trainer). Think of it like teaching a kid to read - you could technically jump to full length novels mean't for adults, but if the kids hasn't learned the alphabet and hasn't worked their way through easier books first chances are they will be extremely frustrated and quickly grow to hate the task. I can tell you from my own education and that trying to skip the basics tends to go poorly no mater what species you are, and not working the basics and building confidence first before jumping in to harder things tends to lead to a bad association with the subject. It pays to build a good foundation of knowledge first before you move on to harder and flashier things, and this applies to teaching humans, teaching dogs, teaching rats, and so forth. Once your rats know a few easy tricks and few intermediate ones with a few steps then you can skip to these harder tricks because they will be confident with training and pay attention for long periods of time, and you will have figured out how to work with them as well.

  • @ShadowTheRat

    I don't like giving time estimates because I feel that makes people rush the process. I might be able to train something in minutes because I've trained it to 18 rats and know how to approach it, but a new trainer will likely need longer. Similarly I know my environment is one my rats are used to and not super distracted in but people often discount things like environmental distractions which make it harder for the rat to learn. I can give you a time estimate for myself, but I'd really encourage you not to rush training. All that will do is lead to confusion and frustration, both for you and the rats. With all that being said in my experience it typically takes rats new to training 2-5 minutes to learn easy tricks like spin, jump to hand, backup, and so forth. Paw takes even less time, needing only a repetition or two for most rats to get it down. Harder base tricks like fetch take a bit longer, often several 5-10 minute sessions which each build on the prior sessions. And tricks involving multiple known tricks typically take a 5-10 minute session to get down, and sometimes another similar length session to proof. (Keep in mind this all disregards generalization, which needs to be worked on separately) All in all rats are extremely fast learners but again there are so many variables involved and training is not an exact science. I gave you the times above for how long it take me now to typically train certain tricks in a certain environment but these are constantly changing, and in the past it would take me days or even over a week to train the same tricks that now that I know how to approach we can get down in minutes. And the more experience both you and the rats gain the quicker they learn - once you've trained a good few tricks the rats get incredibly intuitive about reading your body language and it feels so rewarding to train with them since it really feels like active communication on both sides. Again I'd urge you not to rush any training - as long as you are making some progress each time then you are on track and everything else will follow with time and practice.

    The animals in this video are actually rats, however you can feed both rats and mice the same treats. As for the treats I am using here those are plain yogurt, plain cheerios broken into bits, gerber puffs broken into bits, and occasionally meat baby food. In my how to start training video here I go over more treat examples and general training tips as well, so if you want to know any specifics training wise this video may be helpful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gWx62bWYm7ynntI.html

    How long does it take for you to teach the rat each individual trick? ✨

  • @ShadowTheRat

    @ShadowTheRat

    3 жыл бұрын

    It varies based on a lot of things, such as prior known behaviors (teach a rat to fetch from a drawer if they already know fetch and to pull a string will be easier than teaching it to a rat that has neither of those tricks down and has to work it from the start instead of just chaining 2 behaviors), prior experience (rats with more experience training will learn any new behavior faster than inexperienced rats), the trainers experience (if you've worked with rats before you'll be better at reading their body language and better at quickly increasing criteria to the entire trick), the environment (the less distracting the environment and more familiar it is the easier it is for them to concentrate), and so forth. My advice is to always try and increase criteria as quickly as possible, keeping an eye on the rats body language to see if they understand what is going on and adjusting your training accordingly. You don't want to have a preset time limit in mind because that will just end up frustrating you or the rats - instead just make sure you are making progress each time and if not take a step back and try and approach the trick from a different angle.

    How many days it takes before rat can learn one trick?

  • @ShadowTheRat

    @ShadowTheRat

    4 жыл бұрын

    What your really asking is how many sessions and how long they’d need to have and really that all depends on the trick your working on and the rats prior experience. For example teaching spin to a rat with no prior training can be done in 1-2 minutes during their first training session, but teaching a rat with little prior training to fetch usually takes me 2-5 sessions lasting 2-5 minutes. But I’ve had rats learn fetch within a minute during their first training session as well so it can vary - some rats just pick up certain behaviors easier than others and a lot depends on how well you as the trainer can convey what you want. Honestly I’ve gotten a lot better at communicating with my rats and as a result training goes quicker and is much easier. The first time I taught spin it took me an entire week of several sessions daily - but now I can teach it in just 1-2 minutes to any rat (and have taught it within that time frame to my last 12 rats). Also you have to consider what the rat already knows. Say you want to teach the fetching from a closed purse trick - if your rat has already learned fetch in the past then they don’t have to learn that part and you can teach the money fetching part within seconds. But if they don’t know fetch then you have to teach that behavior as it’s own part and it’s going to take much longer. So while it might take me 10-15 minutes to teach a rat that knows the key components of this trick to do the entire thing, it’s going to take much longer to teach if they don’t know any of the necessary behaviors.

  • @ShadowTheRat

    Your guy is at a really good age to start - rats are just very energetic and spontaneous animals by nature, and no matter if you are starting with a 6 week old or a 6 month old the first few tricks tend to be the hardest because they have to learn to actually concentrate and pay attention. In my case I've started rats between 4 weeks old and 1.5 years old (plus trained older rats started at a young age), and really once they wean onto solids at 3-3.5 weeks they can technically start learning. With that being said its always best to give them an extra week or two with mom past weaning, and only labs really start them so young (labs typically get them at 3-3.5 weeks, and my 4 week old girls were feeder bin babies hence the young age). Most of my rats have been between 6-12 weeks when I started training, just because that's the age I typically get them at. Sometimes I wait a few weeks if they are extremely timid, but otherwise I like to kickstart good habits from the start. All that is to say you can start now, or you can wait, but either way there will be a learning curve. When you first start out the first thing you want to teach is how to follow a lure or target, then once they have that down you want to work on some easy tricks like spin, come, jump to hand, backup, and paw. Once they have 3-5 of these tricks down you will then notice them start to concentrate more, and stick around more. Usually for your first few tricks they will be running off every few seconds, because they don't have a habit of training yet. This is why you want to focus on those easier tricks because they can be trained in small chunks whenever the rats stop by, and don't have too many steps to master. And as they master a few of those tricks they will start to figure out why they should stick around, and start to build a good habit of concentrating for longer periods of time. And once they can concentrate for a few minutes at a time then you can start training more complex stuff like fetch, which has multiple steps to teach and requires more attention on their part to make significant progress. If you want you can check out my rat training guide video here, which goes over the training basics like environment, treats, methods (how to train a lure/target/how to clicker train/etc.), and so forth, along with a few things like how to generalize behaviors and what some example tricks for each method are: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gWx62bWYm7ynntI.html And this video here is one showing how to train spin, with some 4-5 week old babies showing the entire process: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoOZyMl-Z5zYmrA.html Finally I know this doesn't have to do with your question, but does your ratty have a friend? Rats and especially young rats really need to live with other rats, and no matter how much time we put in to them we just can't make up for that. Rats spend so much time playing, cuddling, grooming, and just being together and so if your guy is living alone I'd really consider getting him a same aged, same sex friend.

    I have no problem with this. Rats are not abused for fun of people. But it's only the principle of conditioning.Rats are only interested in food. I have seen a documentary about conditioning Elephants, that are also beaten by their trainers to paint and to break their will. As long the rats like it, no problem.
