    The waste water from cooking is a great tip, I have something to add: Don't throw away the banana peelings after you eat your banana, instead put it in hot water for 10-15 min, wait for the water to cool and use the water on the plants, its great for the plants. Also the moisture meter is AMAZING, its super helpful to monitor my watering schedule from my calathea.

    I bought a ZZ plant for my darkish foyer based on another YT plant “professional” who said “just water it when you pay the rent”, i.e. once a month. Yikes! I’ve had this plant 1 yr. Obviously I stepped up the watering schedule, but she’s not a happy plant. After finding your channel, I realized my mistake and have moved her to an area with more light. At least I kept her alive, barely. I have high hopes for her success now that I’ve moved her! 😊 I’m so glad I found your channel. Thanks for your knowledgeable advice!

    I've been trying to find more answers about this recently. As far as I can tell there's nothing that plants _only_ do at night, but a few of the ones that flower use the levels of darkness to tell if they're supposed to flower or not. Be a fun science experiment to do sometime.

    Something about light that I don’t see people mention is that most windows in newer homes (particularly double pane) have UV filters built in which further reduces the amount of light our plants receive. I have lots of happy plants in a west facing window that receive direct light in the American Southwest, and I think that can partly be attributed to the UV filter. Just something to think about!

    I have south, or North facing windows. So it’s either death due to the sun, or death due to not enough. Good thing is that the south facing window is 3 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. I have cacti, succulents and Musa on the windowsill. And excellent indirect light. All me crazy, but I’m experimenting and have Alocasia Zebrina and caladium miss muffet in that windowsill. Let’s see how they hold up🤡 It’s been weeks and haven’t seen any scorching yet. I occasionally close the curtain and sit behind the window to get a “feel” and must say that it isn’t pleasant. I’m left feeling scorched and with a headache. Zebrina just put out a new leaf, and miss muffet is putting out a new leaf every two days.

    Ficus can be "convinced" to branch out by notching the stem at specific spots with a sharp and clean blade. There's some videos about it. Hard pruning is successful at causing the ficus to branch, but usually that branching looks wonky and may be concentrated in a single side. Notching prevents that by keeping the main stem

    The dark cycle takes place during the day too, it's only called that because it's the part of plant metabolism that doesn't immediately use light. Where the light cycle transfers light energy to energy carriers, the dark cycle uses that energy to make sugar out of CO2 (for energy reserves and as building blocks to make more plant). In the dark, no more energy is captured, and hence, no more sugar can be made; the dark cycle stops in the dark too. The plant then turns to it's sugars for its required energy. People are often confused by it. That said, darkness is still good for plants. Gives them time to make some repairs and reset (light is quite destructive after all).

  • @henkheijmen
    @henkheijmen Жыл бұрын

    It is not that plants only respirate during darkness, they do it during the day too, only the net O2 consuption is lower than the net production. Also not all plants strictly require darkness: some will do just fine and some will absolutely suffocate because they cannot breathe during day time. CAM plants (most succulents and some others) for example only open their stomata during night to minimize water evaporation during the day. A mechanism that helps them survive in harsh desert environments. however is there is a fulltime light source they can never breathe and they will end up suffocating from a lack of CO2. Other considerations is the flowering trigger for plants, some plants need a short or a long night to trigger inflorescence. Here it is important to keep in mind that it is the length of the darkness period that is the trigger, not the light period, so if you flick on the lights for a few seconds during the night, some plants might be triggered to flower.

    well. the dark part of photosynthesis is called like that coz it does not need light to go on, not coz it needs darkness 😅. however, darkness and it's amount sure are necessary and the light cycle regulates intracellular processes. also, indeed the respiration ( when mitochondrias are using glucose to make energy) happens in most plants at night. because during the day they are too busy with photosynthesis and making glucose. so if a plant is 24/7 under the light - it might get tons of sugar but no way to consume it and thus - starve.

    thank you for another helpful and informative video! there’s one thing i’m worried about now, after your mentioning a plant’s need for a light/dark cycle - i live far north, in scandinavia, and this time of year there’s no true darkness to speak of, let alone 8 hours of it 😨 how does this affect my office plants, who, unlike my houseplants, spend all day and night (such as it is) in a bright to low-light room with no shades or blinds? what could i do to help them? should i be moving them away from the window before leaving work each day?

    I'm awful at keeping spider plants alive I'm currently on my 3rd plant but I'm still on my 1st tropical pitcher plant which has more complex care requirements, but for the majority of my plants they're my 1st of them excluding my snake plants which were propagated from the mother plant. Do some them look harsh but people forget plants are extremely resilient if you don't give up on them. For example my Madagascar Palm suffered a massive sun burn from my grow lamp but now after 2 or 3 months it's popping out a lot of new growth because I didn't give up on it

    What I have found is that spider plants like a good amount of light, not direct light. They like some slight neglect on watering, and they like to be a bit root bound. Don't baby them. When they start getting root bound, they produce babies. They start drooping when they need water and perk right back up. I water about once a week and sometimes longer. They don't like constantly wet soil. They will rot at the soil level. The roots can become so large that they are a solid mass when you take them out of the pot. That takes years, though. You will want to put them in a bigger pot before that happens. The babies will grow roots while still attached to the mommy plant, but you don't have to wait for that to happen. I have cut off the babies off the stem from the mother plant and put the baby plants in a shallow bowl of water, and they grow roots.
