10 ESSENTIAL English Expressions

Today we've got 10 useful English expressions and idioms that you can use every day.
If you're learning English you need to learn some expressions and idioms. But don't try and learn every expression there is. Even native speakers don't know them all of course not. Instead build up a toolbox of useful phrases. Divide them into categories and take one out at the right moment. these are my personal favourites or at least ones I use all the time. All of them are useful and are suitable in a number of situations. Where I know the history of the expression I'll explain that too.

It was excellent that you mentioned the actual origin of some of these expressions, for example "the world is your oyster" and "to go dolally". Quality is what characterises your lessons.

Many of those expressions are identical in American English. We would say, “Wake up and smell the coffee” instead of “wakey-wakey” though. Also, I’ve heard, “I’ve got to see a man about a horse” used by an actual cowboy in Texas - he was using the expression to indicate an immediate need to find a toilet.

You're an incredible teacher. Really going to the next level with these idioms. And the English language has a lot of them. Thanks again. To answer the question, I once heard about “crying like a church on sundays” which means complaining excessively. Not very common said to me a welsh teacher, but terribly idiomatic.

Well, to honour my beloved deceased mother, I'd like to remember something funny that she liked to say in some situations (in Spanish): "That's not that Maria was washing and ran out of soap," to refer to a problem that was not simple.

Some of my favourite expressions in English from the top of my head: 1) I failed my exam for the 4-th time. When I finally told my mother, she really *went ballistic* . 2) He was already angry, but when he learned that his wife is having an affair he *went postal* . [The phrase refers to the 1970s workplace rage mass shooting in the US postal offices] 3) *Prospects look promising* 4) *Reciprocal benefit*

I'm a New Yorker and we have enough English, Yiddish, Dutch, Spanish, etc expressions to cover most everything, but one I like to borrow from British English is "bumf." There really is no other word to elegantly express "irritating and useless papers or paperwork created by a worthless bureaucracy." It's not quite the same as "red tape," which usually means paperwork and processes you need to go through to get something done. "Bumf" is more just paperwork for the sake of paperwork, as I understand it. Unfortunately, I can't use the term much here, since no one here speaks British English!

To go doolally, great expression!. Similar to 'to go bonkers' , 'péter un plomb' in French, to blow a fuse. About 'red tape', how interesting!. It seems that Charles V of the German Empire aka Charles I in Spain, made some interesting contributions to the European culture. The Belgian city of Charleroi is named after him and it literally means Charles-King. He also defended Viena from the Ottomans. He did not burn Luther straight away, as was usual with divergent views then, but asked him to explain his theology first, which gave Luther time to evade and write his bible in German, signalling the emergence of modern German. Charles V also declared the natives of America as worth evangelizing and tried to protect them. His father was the great Maximilian, also German emperor, a fine Renaissance man. Then, Charles V gave a king to England, his son Philip II, yes he was king of England during the reign of Mary I, as a consort King without political powers, and his portrait hangs on the walls of the British Parliament. This English King persuaded Mary I not to kill Elizabeth I during the reign of the first. This is the same Philip II that later tried to invade England with the Armada. Finally, the word 'dollar' came to the Caribbean 'Spanish dollar' through the German word Thaler during the XVI century, as Charles V was also king of Spain. The thaler was silver coin and the Americans took the term for their coin because it was the most know term for coins in America due to the Spanish dollar.

By the way, I forgot to explain that the know cocktail 'Bloody Mary' is named after Mary I, Queen of England, as she was a catholic and persecuted Anglicans very violently, killing many. When her half-sister Elizabeth I became Queen, she did the same with Catholics...but there is no 'Bloody Elizabeth' cocktail...

Thank you for this video. I was wondering if any of these expressions were usable in America?

Finally I know what " going to see a man about a dog" means. Edward Petherbridge says it in one episode of his fascinating interpretation of Lord Wimsey - Dorothy L. Sayers detective- your lessons on English expressions are my cup of tea. thank you.

Thanks! Nice one. After trying to do business in East Africa i certainly know what red tape is. So, one of my favourite expressions is GET LOST.

Thank you for the video it has been extremely useful and I especially liked the explanation of the origins of the expressions. My favourite is "as easy as abc " and " it is not brain surgery". Now I know another one with the same meaning.

June Summer there’s also, “it’s not rocket science.” I have a friend who works at NASA who says that all the time.
