    I have my own life hack that my whole family uses on all 5 of our horses, and even passed on to my lesson barn because it's cheap and works great! For thrush prevention, just buy a large bottle of listerine, the mint kind, and put it in a spray bottle. Then you just spray it on the hoof, but make sure it gets in all the little nooks and crannies. You can leave it as is in the bottle, or dilute it with a little water. It works wonders for thrush prevention!

  • @quasarsmom
    @quasarsmom3 жыл бұрын

    Cleaning your brushes with fence is great, my mother always had a large cooling rack up on the barn wall for that. While not a horse hack per say, Glycerine Saddle Soap spray works wonders in holding pony tails in super fine hair (much better than even extra strong hair spray, much chear).

  • @hannahhering655
    @hannahhering6553 жыл бұрын

    Definitely pick through the tail and mane with your hands before brushing and add plenty of detangle spray But whenever you brush out the hair, ALWAYS start at the bottom and work your way up slowly.Whenever you are brushing through a knot, you are pulling out a ton of hairs. If you run into a knot, pull it apart with your fingers until you an brush it though from the bottom.

  • @LeeBertgess

    I do work from bottom up, but I also twist the tail a few times and keep it twisted. For the life of me I can't remember where I read that tip, but it prevents any pulling out of hairs while combing it out.

    I also find that with thin tails or any horses tails if you do it in smaller sections starting from the bottom it doesn't pull out a crap ton of hair like it does when you brush the whole tail from the beginning. Also you can use a metal curry comb or shedding brush to clean out the body brush. Works so well!

    I use those disposable women's face and eyebrow razors to scrape off bot eggs. When they get dull for me, the go to the barn. I am telling you this is the best ever! One pass and they are gone! You can use a new one, but use a lighter hand because it might take a little hair with it. It will not cut skin though. I like the not too sharp, not too dull. If I don't have any in that category I will happily use the sharp ones. Schick makes my favorite, I get them from Amazon. While we are talking, these are the best to get the peach fuzz off your face and exfoliate. Makeup, Moisturizer and sunscreen all work better on a smooth face. Happy scraping!

    Instead of leave in conditioner for brushing your horses tail, you can use a solution of listerine (store brands work just as well) and baby oil. It helps to get rid of dandruff in their tails as well as conditioning them. Always works wonders on my horses tails.

    @@IT-zx5jc yes. Although i usually opt for the yellow store brand ones from walmart or target (much cheaper than listerine with the same effect) The mouth wash is to help with dandruff and cleaning the hair and the baby oil is to help with conditioning it. So you can kind of change the proportions based on what you think your horse needs more of. My horse gets a very dandruffy tail so i put about 60-40 mouth wash to baby oil to help get rid of the dandruff. It doesnt take much baby oil to get the tail looking really nice and shiny and conditioned

    I guess I sort of have a training hack/tip that is pretty obvious. If your horse always tries to run of at the mounting block or tries to move away, give them a treat every time you get on. It will turn a negative situation into a positive one. This worked with every horse I've tried it on😄. ** Make sure only to give a treat after the horse stands completely still**

    Best thing to keep tails long and thick is tail bags/boots/wraps. My horses live in braid in tail wraps or tail boots. Tail is braided and protected so it isn't getting tangles and ripped out. You don't have to take them out to practice. I only rebraid every 1-2 weeks. The tail wraps i buy (cactus tails) says that you can go longer in between. And then ditch the rubber bands and use black electrical tape. Way less damaging to the hair. Pretty much, my routine will all of my horses has been to redo the braids in the mane and tail once a week or every other week. I finish off the braids with electrical tape (biomane has a great video on this). And I put the tail back in its wrap or boot. And it seriously does wonders. Without changing her diet at all, I took a mare that wouldn't grow her tail past her hocks to almost 6 inches longer (in about 5 months). And the short hairs in her mane are growing out, making her mane start to look pretty thick. I am going to put her on biomane here in the next month or so and see if I can get it to grow out a little faster.

    You can also cut the cords of a hay ball without a knife, only using the power of friction between the ropes

    You can use a stiff brush to re-rough the rough out side of your saddle (mostly western saddles I think) when they're worn smooth. I've also heard of using sand paper or a wire brush but haven't tried it, I just used a stiff scrubbing brush and some elbow grease

    I like to use a dandy brush for the tail, it gets the shavings/hay/twigs and whatnot out without snagging the hair as much as a regular human hair type brush, and if you have the plastic curry with the longer slender really dense tendril bristles, those work really well in the tail, too!

    Mane and tail brushing hack: spray in a lightweight hair oil (not cooking oil! there's a difference!) before brushing. Using oil helps to detangle and moisturize the hair which keeps it healthy, without making it super-slick and hard to work with like most slicking/detangling/zero-friction products do.

    If your adjusting another bridle for your horse use the bridle that fits your horse to mesure for another bridle and also when training go at it like you have all day don’t go at it like you don’t have much time also when your horse starts walking ahead of you use a stud chain around there nose it’s bedder then a bridle and it works

    When I wash my horses I leave conditioner in there mane and tail for about 15-20 minutes just to moisten there skin cause I find that if I don’t do that they get very flaky. But I leave the conditioner in there they have nice moist crest or tail. Not only that but there hair just looks and feels so much better.

    If you live somewhere that it snows and you're turning your horses out, spray the bottoms of their feet with Pam or some kind of cooking spray beforehand, it keeps the snow from piling up and becoming giant ice balls that you have to wedge out later

    Really? Last snow I tried brushing on vegetable oil but it didn't work. My horses have shoes; does that matter?
