I admire people who can own only one watch. Since the 70s, I have bought watches to commemorate specific events… wedding, birth of my kids, special trips with my family and memorable events (starting my own business). It doesn’t have to be an expensive piece… it must just capture the essence of that memory. While I don’t own a Rolex (and, honestly, wouldn’t want to), I have Seiko, Omega, Heuer, TAG Heuer, Hamilton and a solitary Tudor that document the last 50 years of my life. Looking and holding each piece takes me right back to that time, just like a piece of music does. My wife, on the other hand, has been wearing the same Citizen Eco Drive for the last 24 years while working, gardening, playing squash, and cannot understand my fascination with watches. When she asks, I just smile… 😊

They should absolutely be here and 100% deserve to be. It’s “hip” to shit on them because they’re very expensive and very hyped, and everyone wants to be a contrarian, especially towards watches that are out of nearly everyone’s price range, and are very popular. Call them overpriced all you want, but the truth is that they go for even more than the retailers sell them for, so they’re actually underpriced. They’re not just hype watches, because they’ve been incredibly popular for a very long time now, and are timeless, iconic pieces, that are also good investments. They may not have the most incredible movements ever made like an FP journe, though they’re still gorgeous, but the design language just perfectly hit the nail on the head. You said you were glad the holy trininity wasn’t here, but I wasn’t surprised at all. I’ve noticed the vast majority of watch channels are consciously avoiding mentioning those watches for fear of their audience going against them.

I feel like my latest pickup is my endgame watch. Seamaster Heritage in steel and Sedna gold. It’s about the best I can expect from a mass produced mechanical watch, and now that I have it (and am wearing it basically daily) anything else I see only at best triggers a “hey that’s cool…” response. Nothing else triggers an “I need this…” response.

I just got the C1 Moonphase with aventurine dial from Christopher Ward and it is magnificent. I wouldn't necessarily say it is my "endgame" watch, there will be others, but if I had to pick out the prettiest watch in my collection it's definitely this one

Speaking of putting it all on "red", I recently became the proud owner of a Grand Seiko SBGA493 "Katana", with the red (more burgundy, actually) dial. As you so rightly put it, the "smooth sweep technology" of the Spring Drive movement is a sight to behold.

The Seiko 5718-8000 Chrono Counter. Like the name suggests it has a chronograph and a counter which automatically advances at midnight so it can double as a big date if you so wish. Very rare as it was only sold in the Olympic village for the duration of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

My end-game watch is something complicated and in a timeless design. Just like so many Patek Grand Complications. But I also had Longines budget, so I opted for the triple calendar Moonphase chronograph instead with the black dial. And boy, og bloody boy is that a stunner. On the bracelet, it's a Speedmaster for James Bond's accountant when he goes to watch a sporty tennis match, and then on a black leather strap, it's suddenly what some classy bloke would wear to an evening drink at a yacht.

Got two of those pieces. End game means I'm over it. In which case you are fed up with the chase or you have reached peak satisfaction. Both states I envy as an end to the constant gnawing distraction of collecting. Put a gun to my head and say "choose one to have and one only" and it will a bullet or the 114270 explorer, which I already have and wear most of the time. Hmmm...maybe that's it then.

My Seiko sarb033 is going to be a lifelong friend. I've worn it daily on a brown leather strap for 8 years and it is starting to show the scratches and patina of a watch that could be handed down to the next generation and tell a story of a life of use. For me it's as beatuiful and timless as the Rolex Explorer but without the fear of being robbed or drawing too much attention. I'm currently living within sight of the Himalays and it feels right at home on my current advenutre.

I agree with the Tag Heuer Aquaracer proposition. Especially in quartz. Looks great, well built, and it is actually robust unlike mechanical watches so you don't have to baby it. It will last as long as you want it to. I believe it has a 10 year battery life, and you can change the battery quickly and cheaply. All you have to worry about is changing the gaskets once every few years (like every other dive watch). No high servicing costs or waiting for your watch to get back from a service. The price is great for what you're getting.

Mechanical watches are very robust. Quartz watches accuracy is very dependent to temperature, more than mechanical watches. Show me a quartz watch that survived from the '70s and I'll show you dozens of mechanical watches that are 80-100 years old and still ticking.

@@seabiscuit726142 Mechanical watches are by definition not robust, especially not in comparison to quartz watches. If you knew quartz watches, you wouldn't be asking for examples of working pieces from decades ago, including the 70s, as if that's some kind of a miracle.

Thought Lange 1 would be the grail watch, but keep on wearing the damn Rolex DJ because it’s an automatic and would die otherwise. So annoying.
