I work on a tugboat and it has twin Caterpillar V12's, each single turbo. When you get on the throttle and they shake the whole boat, the sound is amazing.

very accurate description. Wish there was still a company that made aircooled engines just for nostalgia purposes... Cars got so silent today that its just not fun. Back in the day, even the slowest cars had badass soundtrack. Now you have to install pipes that usually make the car sound stupid not badass (Im looking at you civic with the fart can)

Deutz is also air and oil cooled I use to work in the tear down bay of a shop that only rebuilt them hella simple but could be torn down and rebuilt on site as long as it didn't mess up the crank separate cylinders and heads so you could take off what was broke off replace and fire it right back up. The 12's never sounded good imho in the dyno's tho 10's were decent sounding and the 3 was just odd. Good work horse or generator power for there age.

What makes them so loud is that most of the tatras were naturally aspirated. Turbos for the most part will make your exhaust volume very quiet . Becuae they are air cooled does not effect the loudness of the exhaust note.

Can we just stop and admire the rear suspension design on the Peugeot? Torsion bars integrated into the gearbox case (probably the best way to mount them) with a T-pivot blade type anti-roll bar mounted between the bell cranks and potentiometers. Also look at the angle of the dampers, very high motion ratio.

Factory cars or street legal cars? Cause if its any car or any street legal car, then it will be a drag racing video only. Modern 2000+ cars E60 M5 V10 or the Veyron at around 10 MPG. Hemi cars had 5 MPG from the factory isch, some big trucks back then had 3 MPG. All Factory non-modded cars, Bugatti Royale Type 41, had a 12.7L engine and came in at about 1.91 MPG.

Jaguar made a V12 for the XJS in the 90s that got about 6 mpg (if even that) Pretty much any Rolls Royce or Bentley (L-Series engine or older) is measured in “Gallons per mile” rather than “Miles per gallon”

The reason the Kharkiv V12 has different stroke lengths is because it uses a master-and-slave conrod setup. On the master side, the rods pivot directly off the crankpins. But the slave rods, instead of pivoting off the crankpins, they pivot off a smaller journal attached to the master rod. On the Kharkiv engine, the pistons on the master rods have a 180mm stroke. The pistons on the slave rods have a 186mm stroke, but not only that, they sit higher at TDC and lower at BDC than the master side. Their TDC timing is also slightly less than 60° instead of being equal to 60° if they used side-by-side or fork-and-blade rod setup.

When Iraq war in 1991 started, american soldiers were wondering how the czech tatras keep going, while their trucks boil water and the convoy needs to stop. The air cooled engines have huge use in military aplications. I think Indian military is using large quantity of Tatras. (And is about to buy more.) Our special anti-chemical unit was participating there and then, we joined Nato 7 years later.

Connection rods from one bank are connected not to the crankshaft, but to connection rods of the other bank. "Прицепные шатуны" - i don't know how to translate that to english properly. This was caused by undeveloped soviet industry of the time. They could not easily adapt to production of more complicated traditional V12 crankshafts which have longer crank pins and are less rigid. This kind of connection rods was quite common at those times, especially on O aircraft engines.

The coolest fact of the 40x later the 42x and finally the 44x (including the 404 424 and 444 V12) is, that this engine was developed together by MAN AND Mercedes! It originates the new regulations of the 70s where Germany changed its laws for heavy lorries from which point the regulation said, that a truck needed at least 8HP per tonne. That was a problem because until then they've been using naturally aspirated V8 Diesel but they couldn't manage to get 320hp out of them so they needed a V10 for the 40t lorries. The 402 V8 was for the cheaper 32t versions. After the 42x series MAN left that project and sold their part in the engine factory to Mercedes. These engines are damn reliable, have a reasonable fuel economy and are easy to rebuild. There's a reason you can still buy these engines new for marine use or for Gensets. Practically being a 70s product. It's not unusual to see 100.000 operating hours in these without a rebuild!!! A 100.000kms are 1000-3000 operating hours, just to have a comparison for you.

The good thing about at least modern diesels (about 16:1 compression or less) is that they should be "fairly easy" modifiable to run ethanol without knocking it.

Nice video, as always, but I saw a mistake on the Cummins V12. You gave the specs for the 2300 cid K-series, but the engine you showed running was actually a V-1710. Visually the engines are identified by the cylinder heads. The K has an individual head on each cylinder, and the V-1710 has cylinder heads that each cover 3 cylinders. Bore and stroke is 6.25x6.25 for the K, and 5.5x6.0 for the 1710. The 1710 is basically a doubled N14. It is weird in that it has a 45degree bank angle. Normal rated power was 800hp@2100rpm.
