    It's interesting to compare your car hassles with ours in Australia. It's much the same. I subbed a while ago because I own a South African-built Ford Courier Crewcab with the V6 4.0l SOHC engine, and you did a video about them.

    @@samuelbernards7453 As always, the best recommendation here is to have a thorough pre-purchase inspection on the particular unit w/ an exceptional technician. However, pre-2010 Q7s had several serious first-gen problems like the timing chain failing prematurely, etc. If you research, you’ll see that it’s safer to buy a post-facelift Q7, which was 2010 and up as Audi resolved several of these critical issues.

    Excellent work. Bottom line: buying a car cheap does not translate to cheap maintenance. BMW, Audi, Volvo, Mercedes still remain to be luxury brands that require resources to maintain. Keep up the good work.

    Some trivia for you. I decided to replace the thermostat housing and the water pump on my Courier. Someone before I purchased it thought the fan bolt that attaches to the water pump was a left-hand thread. It had been forced to a point where it had welded to the pump. I wanted the water pump pulley, so beat the pump and fan to death to get at the pulley. In the process, I warped the pulley. So, I went hunting for a new water pump pulley. I hunted everywhere in Australia. Parts stores, wreckers, Ford dealers. No one had one. I even had friends across Australia asking wreckers and dealers. I had to buy one from the US. Oh, and if you're wondering why I destroyed the clutch fan, I found a Nissan twin electric fan unit that fits the radiator (with some modification...see my KZread channel) and so I don't need that, just the pulley for the serpentine belt.

I must say the maintenance costs were high, oil change had to be done with the original Castro oil. parts esp for S40 were expensive, XC90 was a favorite since I was able to source second parts..

    I used to own a 2003 Toyota Caldina, which had the 2 litre D4 engine. The reason why they are so unreliable is because they are early direct injection technology, which was prone to carbon build-up. Rough running and stuttering were common. Mitsubishi had similar issues with their GDI engines. Toyota fixed their engines by adding port injection, so something like the Toyota Mark X with their direct injection V6 engines are good cars.

    I drive a 2012 qashqai/dualis manual, 10 years, still drives like a dream, same engine, gearbox only changed some suspension parts. I know many owners who had the original from 2007 still same engine and gearbox. I can fault only a few things like boot handle breaking, and radio screen fading. And changing spark plugs is a pain. My car is in better shape than my brothers corolla that we bought at the same time, I guess it depends on the owner. I feel the car doesn't deserve a mention alongside most of those cars especially the BMW 116.

    Hapo kwa Dualis I partially disagree. The MR20DE is a reasonably reliable (if not slightly uninspiring) engine. The reason people complain about overheating is because it has two thermostats which most mechanics dont know about. So if the second one fails they start the usual 'kuweka fan direct', toa thermostat business until the engine severely overheats and blows the head gasket. If you replace this second thermostat this engine will serve you for a long time with just regular maintenance. As for the CVT, it can serve you for some time but ujue one day it will call you with your three names. Either way its still alot cheaper to replace a CVT than to pay the Toyota tax.

    @@RadBunny2269 people exaggerate how bad they are. If you take care of it and change the CVT fluid every 50K or so they can last you for a reasonable amount of time. But these transmissions dont like abuse so dont use them for towing or heavy duty applications.

  • @RadBunny2269

    @RadBunny2269

    @@skrevox I hear what you’re saying but it’s been proven that JATCO CVTs are actually poorly made straight from factory. I will disagree w/ you on that people are exaggerating because I’ve seen the failure rates for these trannies and they are that bad. Even Subaru had to abandon using them and move to the Toyota one after the pic failures they had. CVTs can last if you don’t thrash on them but Nissan CVTs are flawed by design.

    On #1, it’s not exactly the case. That’s a myth. It depends on the model. For Fozzies, for example, anything 2018 onwards that’s JDM has zero steering rack issues. ‘07-‘12 Fozzies also had zero gearbox issues. Zero. It’s the early ‘13-‘15 CVT ones that employed the Nissan CVT (I know, I know). 2015 onward Fozzies w/ Aisin (Toyota) CVTs are okay as much as any CVT can be okay. For ‘18 & later JDM CVTs across all models, it’s not the entire transmission that fails. It’s a particular spring in the torque converter that comes w/ a faulty TCU setting. There’s someone locally who has developed their own small circuit board to undulate that spring as needed & have deployed it across not Forester and Legacy CVTs w/ optimal results. For USDM & EDM Foresters it’s the torque converter solenoid that fails. And since Subaru won’t sell it as a stand alone part you have to buy the entire torque converter, which people are replacing successfully. Let’s keep problems in context. It’s not a wide scale transmission failure.

    Toyota mark x uses 6 iridium spark plugs costing 3000 ZAR, the four shock absorbers from Toyota dealer cost 20 000 ZAR

    These numbers aren’t shocking, you know. Genuine Toyota parts are actually never cheap. That’s a fallacy that the African used car market falls for because they’re buying knock offs. Genuine Toyota parts cost an arm & a leg compared to some other Japanese options but they last until Armageddon.

    @@RadBunny2269 I was there, ran to Mark X for the fun to drive V6 and rear wheel drive experience. That thing costs more to maintain than my Turbo SHJ. Do a suspension job you need 8 bushes per wheel, that's 32 add the adaptive shocks and your pocket gets ripped open

    Mark X is reliable but if it breaks down, those parts are very expensive. If you put the 'fake' parts you'll cry buckets of tears
