Corrupted my 20s. Still, thanks for having me, man!

Totally unrelated to this comment but you should note that Blood Meridian is not at all minimalistic, unlike The Road, so you may like it more for that reason alone

@@connorwatersmith5575 one should try not to confuse minimalism with simplicity. Think Hemingway or the Book of Job. I think The Road has incredible linguistic depth and it is not a purely plot orientated novel. It is as much about the decaying (and an attempt to preserve) language as it is the end of the world. Please give it another try R.C.

@@davidnorris166 That book tore me apart. So hauntingly beautiful. Maybe his appreciation will come with age? When I was around his age I tried to read people like Hemingway and McCarthy and I just didn't get what all the fuss was. But now in my late 20's I came back around to them, and have just been blown away time and time again. I think their stories because they're written in such straight forward simple prose and the way the narrative flows it makes you draw from your own life, the joy, the pain and all the things you wish could've been and you feel it oozing from these characters. I think just more life experience helps lol Hard to articulate, i'm not the writer here. Or maybe it's just not his cup of tea.
To be fair, "corrupting the youth" is a legacy that fits you very well, Cliff. Signed: corrupted young person

Yeah, it's pretty well known in Japan that Mishima derided Dazai's writing. Mishima embodied the (ultra-)nationalistic, restorative ethos of post-war Japan, whereas Dazai embodied the depression and soul-searching that followed from that disastorous period of Japanese imperialism and colonialism. Basically, Mishima thought that Dazai was too emo. I'm a fan of both, although I detest Mishima's politics.

I don't like nationalistic people in general. They tend to be big bigots in the end. More than they realize. If Mishima became emperor, there would've already be an ww3.
Sir Sargent and Sir Waldun collaborating, awesome, I'm gonna read at least one of these, especially Blood Meridian

wow, blood meridian is a modern myth... it's the secret sauce! From an Austrian reader!!! this book is glowing with beauty and violence
If your wife is into reading too, you guys should totally make a video about book opinions (if she's willing), that would be fun to watch! :)
Oddly enough I finished "No Longer Human" just 10 minutes before I started the video. I think you are in for something totally different than what you anticipate.

I like that you made this more of a crossover than the last one, must've been hard to make this one. Try read Mrs Dalloway in as few sittings as possible so you don't get lost, because bookmarks are hopeless in a stream-of-consciousness without chapters!
10 Books I Want to Read (or finish reading): Stoner by John Williams My Struggle vol 1 by karl ove knausgaard The Idiot by dostoevsky Outline by Rachel Cusk Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates Knee Deep In Wonder by April Reynolds In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O'Brien The Master & His Emissary by Iain McGilchrist Schoolgirl by Osamu Dazai Varamo by Cesar Aira
Another GREAT video, you guys! Your dynamic together really works well. Entertaining personalities and interesting literature. I read The Man without Qualities in Jan-Feb of this year and then COVID hit right in the middle of my read of The Twenty Days of Turin in March. The atmosphere of impending doom and disintegration in Musil's book eerily presaged what was about to happen in real life. Creepy. Thanks for the mention in connection with Bottom's Dream, Cliff! Best of luck on that journey!
Thank you for this star-studded collaboration. I'd love to read The Man Without Qualities. I read The Confusions of Young Törless a couple years ago and that really was quite something!
I love watching both of you guys. Thanks for always giving great recommendations.
If I'm not mistaken, the NYRB version of William Gaddis' The Recognitions is on the shelf behind Cliff. Would be really interested in a review of that!
"No Longer Human," Cliff 👍👍👍
This makes my day: I’ve actually read not one, but TWO books that RCW hasn’t (yet)! He’s in for a treat with both, and indeed, the rest on his fascinating list, I’ve no doubt. Keep up the good work, guys.
This is so lovely! It can be challenging to keep going with our own creative pursuits, but this is definitely an inspiration for my music.
I don't ever comment but when you announced you would read The Man Without Qualities I shouted as if the USA team had scored a goal in the World Cup. This led to my housemates to stare at me in a disturbed and puzzled manner. Embarrassment aside, I'm halfway through the first volume and I must admit it is a sublime experience. It is touted as a novel of ideas but I must note it is also a novel of emotions. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do Cliff!
Mrs. Dalloway is very good and important. But I think To the Lighthouse is her modernist masterpiece. The way she shows the utter despair and fragmentation of Europe in the aftermath of WWI through a simple story of a family and their spiraling thoughts on human nature is breathtaking.

Absolutely love when the two of you collab
Love the books and the way it's filmed. Super cool!
Fantastic editing here, you guys. Great video.
Finally broke down & ordered Story Of An Eye. I hope I like it as much as you do!
this is quite possibly,,,,,,,,,,,,,the best channel on YT. The collaboration with R.C. just perfect.
This is was a pretty cool collaboration definitely gonna check out some of these books
I just love and enjoy the duo of you two! You both should be doing more such videos often. Love and best wishes from India 💐💕
12:13 "until you're *DEAD* " 🤣🤣 Never change, Cliff!
McCarthy's prose is absolutely not spare and minimalistic. That's his late style that basically started with the Border Trilogy and became progressively more pronounced until The Road which is the most minimalistic. His earlier work, particularly Blood Meridian and Suttree, are the opposite of minimalist.
You will have so much fun reading Fear and Loathing. I laughed all thru it. I also had to go to Circus Circus in Vegas to recreate the carousel bar scene.
Nice! Another video awesome!!! I legit just tried to search all the books y’all mentioned at my local bookstore and they literally do not have a single one 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ one day I hope to live in a place where the local bookstore actually has things of substance
No longer Human is easily one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written.
Loving your videos, I’d be really interested to hear some other dark Magic Realism recommendations.
Five books I want to read (selected to not be obvious Better-Than-Food-viewer picks): The Ice-Shirt by William Vollmann The Aesthetics of Resistance by Peter Weiss The Unicorn by Iris Murdoch Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann Search for Destiny by Boris Strugatsky
Some time in past you mentioned that you are reading (at that time) Gravity's Rainbow, may I humbly ask if there will be a review of it soon? Cannot wait. Keep up the amazing work.

hey hey hey I recognize that big red book behind you!! :) I am soooooo looking forward to that review!! :)
Loving the collabs
I just started ‘the man without qualities’ a few weeks ago, so far so good!
Thankyou for this!🧡
I like the back and forth. I will have to try and do this.
Amazing work guys!
I sure like these collaborative videos :)
Wow a video going through books wanting to be read, with all books that are actually interesting! We don’t deserve them
Yes! You're going to love No Longer Human! Dazai was a genius. 😁
NYRB have another Josep Pla book called "The Grey Notebook" -- it's a memoir.
Hey! So excited that you’re going to check out catalan authors. I feel like it is an incredibly underrated and unknown body of literature internationally. Also, literary catalan language is extremely rich and beautiful. Feel free to get in touch, I’ll happily recommend you some books/authors!
"something to liven up the day" -says he will probably read on toilet or before going to bed-
Great collaborative effort! :)
I'm sooo happy!
Just wonderful!
Really enjoyed "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" both the book and the movie. Highly Recommend It!
Wow, as a Catalan speaker from Mallorca it was really surprising (and kind of nice) to see a Catalan author in the video. Props to Archipelago for translating Catalan authors. (By the way, I'm not sure if you care and I don't want to be the nitpicking commenter but it's pronounced more like "Jewsep " rather than José.)

@@BetterThanFoodBookReviews I think the interviewer probably uses both Josep (Catalan) and José (Spanish) because Pla also wrote some of his work in Spanish under the name José Pla. In the interview he says (in a rather thick Catalan accent that sometimes puzzles the subtible engine) that he doesn't really master the Spanish language ("Castillian is very complex for me,,,"). This makes me laugh a little, because the relatively few thing he wrote in Spanish hardly reveal any deficiency in that regard. The opposite, in fact. He also says (brace yourselves) that he believes anyone over the age of 35 who reads novels is a cretin. I think his most important book is the Grey Notebook. Just an opinion (though widely shared). The only problem with reading Pla in English is that his style is really one of the magical things about him.
Hope you enjoy Josep Pla, one of the best catalan "classic" author of a culture that has to survive between the Spanish and French's ones. So not an easy thing. A current other reference in catalan is clearly: "Confess", by Jaume Cabré. Maybe the most outstanding novel in Catalan of this century.
Hi Cliff. I just wondered if you had come across or considered A Girl is A Half-formed Thing by Eimar McBride? It is one of the darkest novels I have read, with some very harrowing themes so I thought it might appeal.
6:00 You are gonna love Josep Pla. Great catalan author, and not independentist like any inteligent catalan intelectual.
It’s interesting how both men communicate as Cliff speaks in a more conversational English and Waldun tries to sound erudite and learned
Cliff picks books like I pick wine. "Honduras? Never had a bottle from there before".
Thought the same about the road
Sedaris is great. I read all his stuff. Also Chuck P. Need to look into his latest. Blood Meridian is so excellent. McCarthy's best. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to read Story of the Eye, Hellfire, and Salt Water. Did Jerry Lee Lewis die? I didn't know.
We need more Bataille reviews, while I wait I think I'll go buy some eggs...I have some ideas
my favorite David Sedaris book is Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls
Maybe I should re-reads Mrs Dalloway. I have reads a few of her books since. The next one I have to reads is actually The Waves.
LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A DUO
I was trying to find your review to The Recognitions, to no avail. Did you take it down?
@Cliff you should read 'Difficult Death' by Rene Crevel, he was also one of the surrealists - great prose into a suicidal mind.
Great!
You would love Thomson 'Kingdom of fear'
Cliff: you’re gonna like Hellfire!!

One I am reading "The lowland' by Jhumpa Lahiri....
Great duo
Hey, man! Have you read "The Enchanted Wanderer" by Nikolai Leskov? No one apparently has! Neither have I as yet to be sure. But it would be great if you were the first to review it...
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is so good. Everything good in the movie is taken directly from the book and the whole book is like that.
Blood Meridian will absolutely change your life!
I’m reading Blood Meridian now...... geeezzzz Louise
You should read “Os lusíadas” by Luis de Camões, it’s the story of the Portuguese people written in a form of and epic poem, it’s amazing, not so sure you’re into history stuff, but the way it’s written seems like it’s right up your alley! Also, you helped me get through lockdown, i binged your videos ahha thank you!
Mrs. Dalloway is a great choice! I hope R.C. enjoys it :D
Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe is worth checking out
I was thinking about buying that Leonora Carrington book, after falling into a KZread rabbit hole about her. There are some good docs about her later life in Mexico. I was going to visit the surrealist gardens in las pozas and her museums nearby, then covid happened. Got a refund, bought some kayaks instead.

The Milk of Dreams is also good. you can find ebooks with googlefu.
Robert Musil is amazing, I recently started reading it, just take it slow!
Unrelated to the topic of the video, but these two are quite the handsome pair.
Completely agree with RC's take on The Road by McCarthy. It was a drag and is one of the few books I have DNF'd.

Mishima, Dazai, Kawabata, Akutagawa... Actually, it turns out a lot of influential Japanese authors have committed suicide, or otherwise died at a relatively young age from illness. Very unfortunate.
I just started Call of the Wild. Really brutal.
Nice
Are you still in Detroit? I live nearby. I have a personal library of around 3000 books. It’s difficult to find people who are really passionate about literature.
Does Waldun do book reviews anywhere ?
Dazai and Woolf, was it intentional or just an accident?
best episode
Sr. Waldun
I suggest This books 1) secrets of Sanatan Dharma 2) Habits, wisdom and mindset of highly successful people 2020 .both books available on Amazon and kindle
Your guys are so funny. "I hope you get to page two. No, really"
That's really well put. You definitely corrupted my 20s as well.
Sedaris is not from Portland. He’s from Raleigh North Carolina
Hello sir lots of love from India❤️❤️
Cliff, read Hellfire!!! Tosches is my favorite author. Hellfire makes Dino pale in comparison. Hellfire doesn't contain mundane information in an appendix as big as the book itself. Hellfire is a fist full of amphetamines washed down with a swill of whiskey. Though humble beginnings of The Killer are included in this amazing biography, the book opens with Jerry Lee crashing a car into the gate of Graceland. So, strap in and enjoy a ride into the Hell of a Pentecostal preacher.
I can see that you have a vast and versatile list of books to read but do not sleep on Provinces of Night
Have you read "Either/Or" by Kierkegaard?
