Since this is a list that could (and should) find many new players, i guess it's always good to remind that NO game SHOULD be a stepping stone to a "heavier" one, the goal is to have fun, you can play just "gateway games" and it's ok

@@shayanaminnjad5354 I think the term "gateway," is fine, but totally agree that because it may be considered that type of game certainly doesn't mean people should eventually move on to heavier stuff...or even if you've been in the hobby a while and now love heavier games that you can't also like the "gateway" games.

That also works the other way around. You don't have to start by playing gateway games. If a HEAVY game appeals to you, go for it. Some people just like the challenge or just vibe with a game so much that the weight rating hardly matters. For example, some people i would have never imagined playing Ark Nova just clicked with it, sat down and just tried and asked questions until they got it.

Great list! I also want to add, if you're new to boardgaming but you feel more attracted to heavy games, don't feel intimidated and go for it! I got into boardgaming at the end of 2021 and got Scythe very soon, and Mage Knight (for solo) 6 months later. These heavy games actually made me love board games! Lighter games wouldn't have done that for me. If you want to dive into the deep end straight away, and you're looking forward to learning something complicated, go for it!

This is a really good list with a good approach to variety. I would pick different games for a lot of categories, but Cascadia, Wingspan, and Just One are definite cross-overs with mine. A game I was quite surprised not to see here is Everdell, it's got such great theme and art, is relatively approachable at a baseline, and can grow into a really satisfying midweight euro once you start adding some expansion content.

I own most of the games on this list and have introduced my family to a number of them. Instead of Clank, we play Cubitos for the push your luck mechanic. My family really enjoys it and the expansion will likely help get it to the table more often. I have tried some heavier games but feel like I enjoy games at the weight of Lost Ruins of Arnak best along with some of the lighter games like Space Base and Wingspan. This hobby is such a great one in finding fun in a variety of complexities and mechanics.

This is a great list. I'm not personally a fan of Arnak, but I know it's very popular. Another thing to consider including would be one or two small box card games like The Crew or Parade. When I started my collection, I got drawn into the hype of big games with tons of bells and whistles because those felt like the "real boardgames" but over time I've come to appreciate smaller, simpler games that have still have some strategic depth but also foster a more social experience. They also tend to be easier to teach, easier to get to the table, cheaper and they take up much less space. Also BGA is a great place to try out a ton of different games. Playing online might not be everyone's cup of tea but it's a fantastic way to try something out once to decide if it's worth spending the money and attempting to talk your friends or family into playing it.

Here are my 10 games if I was starting a collection today: 1 1. Azul 2. Castles of Burgundy 3. Mission: Red Planet 4. Race for the Galaxy 5. Isle of Cats 6. Pan Am 7. The King is Dead 8. Forbidden Desert 9. Codenames 10. High Society Honorable Mentions: Sea Salt & Paper (would be #1 but not available in US currently), Scythe (might be a tad heavy), Parks

@@xabulense Completely agree that it is not a gateway game. I think many people in the board gaming community don’t recognize what non-gamers view as complex or introductory. I set up Lost Ruins of Arnak and played it with my friend who plays heavy Lacerda games and he had fun and was easy to teach, but my family looked at it and were so intimidated and scared to try it. The weight rating is so subjective that it’s hard to give it any real credibility.

Hey great video! Man I LOVE Lost Ruins of Arnak! Feel the need to add my two cents. 1. I usually suggest the Century games for a great place to start a collection. The 3 games alone are good representations of their genres, but also their combinations are a great exploration of modern trends of combining mechanisms. These games aren’t GREAT, but always a good time. 2. Long time owner of Lords of Waterdeep. Really enjoy the game, but the intrigue cards “take that” aspect always kinda annoyed me and lead to kingmaker situations. However lately, I’ve been playing 2 player with a buddy using the app, and it’s now my preferred way to play! Its nice to have an obvious target for these cards, rather than someone feeling targeted due to arbitrary whims.

Really great list. In addition, I would highly recommend games that are enjoyable as solo experiences. When I entered the hobby 8 years ago, I had delusions of playing with my wife, my son, and friends… It’s usually just me - lol. I would also pay attention to the game mechanics and not lean too heavily into one. For example, one of my first purchases was Mice and Mystics; charming game. However, as I have grown with the hobby, I prefer games that rely less on dice. Hope this helps any new table top gamer.

Yes, i also had that kind of delusions 😅 Now, when i'm buying new games i always check if is there a solo mode or, at least, if it plays well with just 2P... That's why, for instance, that 7 Wonders is not in my list.Regarding mechanics, dice is not a big problem for me, but i do agree that sometimes relying on dice could be really frustrating so, that is a good piece of advice. Happy games!

Some of the early games I was brought up on were Rise of Augustus, Survive, Excape, Carcassone, and Ticket To Ride. All great 'starting out' games. Good lists! I have to vote for Dead of Winter because my name is in the credits. 😁 I was a beta tester. My favorite game was Lords of Waterdeep, a great worker placement/resource management game. It's been replaced by Dune: Imperium which has many elements of Lords of Waterdeep but adds deck builder mechanics. My area control game is Tyrants of the Underdark. It satisfies my need for a Risk style game without any die rolling. It substitutes a deck builder for die rolling. Oddly enough, another new game in our rotation is Galaxy Hunters. Think of it as Pacific Rim in space. It is also worker placement/resource gathering game. The game our game group has played more than any other game is Clank. We also played the full campaign of Acquisitions Inc. Clank. It's a legacy version of Clank. Also, I have to give a shout out to Ryan Laukat. I love his games and I'm blown away by his doing the art for the games as well. I've played Near and Far, Above and Below, Sleeping Gods, Roam, and Eight Minute Empire. I have really enjoyed them all. Finally, pet peeve time. Game companies, please quit using canyon trays in your packaging! It is just plain lazy. Give me appropriate trays and packaging to keep components from rattling around in the box. Don't force me to buy a third party game organizer to protect my game components.

I love your channel and I love your content, but the entire problem with a list like this is that it conflates gaming with collecting. If I knew someone just starting out, I would suggest that the rent or borrow or go to demos or play online and play as much as they can BEFORE buying anything. Get in the habit and mindset of buying once you know you will enjoy it and know you will play it. That’s the huge difference between “games you should play” and “games you should own in your collection”. Gaming should be about having fun and connecting with people you like, not a financial burden or obligation.

My list would be Ticket To Ride(Set Collection), 7 Wonders(Drafting), Dominion or Paperback or Clank (DeckBuilding, i would tend to sway lighter if I could only have 10 because they are easier to get to the table, but Dune: Imperium is a great pick here too.), Just One or Codenames(PartyGame), Architects or Raiders of the North Sea(Worker Placement), Wingspan(Engine Building), Welcome to(flip and write), Cat in the Box or the Crew(trick taking), Atlantis Rising(coop, again I’d tend to sway lighter but really Spirit island is the best coop imo, also only game I really enjoy solo), Dice Throne(mainly for 2 player, but just straight up fun dice battler)

I think its very important to take into account if you are most likely going to be playing predominantly with 2 players or 3+, some games scale well at 2 players and some really dont. With this taken into account I would recommend the following; 2 Players only (or at least most of the time); Splendor Duel 7 Wonders Duel Carcassonne Azul Ganz Shoen Clever Patchwork Pandemic Encore Stardew Valley Junk Art MicroMacro: Crime City 3+ Cubitos Codenames Survive: Escape From Atlantis Akropolis 7 Wonders Uno Flip Kingdomino Ticket To Ride Catan

Great list!!! Love the channel and your energy together. Flamecraft...I feel like the publisher did a whole lot of paid content contracts, thought this immediately after the second play. The hype was way too much for an okay (and that's....yeah) game.

Oooh, if I had to make a list... I think Sound Box would be great. Really silly and very simple. It's cooperative codenames but with soundmaking. No Thanks is a game that leads to that "ooooooo" moment after the first round. I think the Estates and Modern Art would also be good contenders, but they're bigger and little harder to find. Ra just came back and might also fit this bill. I'm not a big social deduction fan. Often times, can feel too intense for me but ScapeGoat is just funny. And honestly makes me feel more paranoid than any other game. I find Horrified absolutely charming. MicroMacro continues to amaze me. There's some real detective work to be done with basically no rules overhead. Dungeon Fighter is another silly game. But it gets people practicing dice throwing like a sport. I've never seen people try so hard to be so good at something so ridiculous. I didn't expect so many coops on my list, but guess those are the ones that I like to showcase when trying to show people how fun board games can be

Yep, thats the list. As a newbie in the land of boardgames I started with most of the games mentioned here. except for a few i did not like which are apparently the most popular.....Azul and Wingspan. If I had to make a top 10 list with honorable mentions it would be. Clank, Paint the Roses, Love Letter, Ruins of Arnak, Just One, Ark Nova, Fallout Shelter, Bargain Quest, Sheriff of Northingham and Cascadia. Honorable mentions would be Scout, Red Dragon Inn, Cockroach Poker, Bang, No thanks, King of Tokyo, Hive Mind, 6 Takes and Concordia.

I've not got room for more than 10 larger games, so I had to think really hard about this. I needed to hit all the big pillars and have a mix of light, co-op and heavy. I have settled on Carcassone (I have the 20th Annaversary Edition) Catan Pandemic Ticket to ride (I have Europe but honestly America + the expansion is better) Small World (Of Warcraft) Viticulture (Essential Edition is a must) Marvel United Alhambra Scotland Yard Ark Nova (Terraforming Mars, Scythe or Wingspan might be better for some people in this slot) I recommend a Muchkin, Lets Summon Demons, a Fluxx, A Tiny Epic and Port Royal as small games to add to those 10.

Here are ten games I could see being a good way to start a collection depending on the gamer with the understanding that some of these might too pricy or intimidating for some while being a perfect early purchase to others. Carcassonne Ticket to Ride Azul Dixit Wingspan Pandemic/Wrath of Lich King/Clone Wars Zombicide* Takenoko Cartographers Santorini (2p) / Santorini NY (2p+) There aren’t any worker placement games on this list because I don’t think I’ve played enough good entry level ones to recommend. I love Viticulture and it might be a gateway for some but I have had poor luck introducing new people to it. Maybe I’d suggest Raiders of the North Sea.

The games I played first that got me into the hobby were Carcassonne (the actual start to my collection), Ticket to Ride (not my copy), Zombicide (not my copy), Takenoko, Azul, and Wingspan in that order, and they would all make my list though Zombicide might be too pricy for most new gamers. But social deduction betrayal games were almost an “anti-gateway” to me on the other hand. I’d recommend them carefully because the ones I played almost scared me away. I cannot handle that kind of social pressure. I noticed a lack of lying or betrayal games in this list too (including honorable mentions) was there a reason for that?
