10. Tawi Tawi Crocodile
In 2017, a fisherman who was working in the waters off the coast of Tawi Tawi island in the Philippines saw what he thought was a large log floating in the ocean. As he approached it, it began to move, and it dawned upon him that this was, in fact, a giant crocodile.
9. Jaws III
Jaws 3 was, until his death at the age of around 45 in January of 2020, believed to be the largest crocodile to be held in captivity in Asia. He was born at the Madras Crocodile Bank in India in the 1970s when the park was intended to become a crocodile farm. Its purpose soon changed to become a wildlife sanctuary and, at its peak, had more than 8 thousand crocodiles of 14 different species on the premises.
8. Puento Noire Crocodile
This is the only image that exists of the Puento Noire Crocodile… an enormous Nile crocodile that had been causing problems near Puento Noire in the Republic of Congo. It was seen as a major risk to the local community, especially to fishermen who worked near to where it roamed, and it had already been blamed for hunting farmers’ livestock.
7. Gomek
Gomek was a saltwater crocodile that was captured in Papua New Guinea at some time in the early 1980s. He was purchased by a couple in Florida in 1985, and they kept him at their home for 5 years before he outgrew his pen and they weren't able to care for him any longer. They sold him to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in 1990 where he became an instant favorite to visitors.
6. Cassius
Named for Cassius Clay (AKA the boxer Muhammad Ali), Cassius the crocodile was once recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as being the largest crocodile in captivity at a length of 18 feet and a weight of 2,200 pounds. He's a saltwater croc and had become a severe problem in the Finniss River of Australia’s Northern Territory.
5. Yai
Siamese crocodiles were once common throughout southeast Asia, but thanks to habitat destruction, and hunting for meat and also for safety, their numbers have rapidly dwindled in recent decades. If you want to see quite how large and fearsome these crocs can be, however, you can visit the Samutprakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo in Thailand.
4. Brutus
Brutus the crocodile is just over 18 feet long and lives in the Adelaide River in Australia’s Northern Territory. He’s a saltwater croc, and has become somewhat of a local legend thanks to a series of incredible images that have been taken of him.
3. Bujang Senang
Deadly monsters often become a part of local folklore, and in Malaysia, near the Pelaban river, people long spoke of a crocodile called Bujang Senang. According to the legends, he was a human warrior who, while trying to rescue his wife, was killed by her kidnappers. As his body floated away, a shaman turned him into a crocodile so he could get his revenge on his enemies.
2. Dominator
Despite his fame, Brutus isn’t actually the biggest or baddest saltwater crocodile in the Adelaide river in Australia… that honor goes to another one called ‘Dominator’, that lives just a bit further down.
1. Lolong
The Bunawan creek in the Philippines is somewhat of a hotspot for giant crocodiles, and in 2011 residents were fearful for their lives thanks to an absolute monster that was roaming the waters. After attacking boats, and suspected of killing a fisherman and a young girl over the previous few months, authorities had no choice but to find a way to remove him.

Hey, Katrina and Origins Explained crew! I was pleasantly surprised and happy to see Gomek on the list today! St Augustine is my hometown and I grew up within walking distance of The Alligator Farm, where Gomek lived the good life for MANY YEARS. I even worked at the gift shop inside as my 2nd job ever at 16. Wow! 20 years ago. I still frequently drive by The Alligator Farm to visit my mom. 😍🐊🐊🐊

Shout out to me from the 🇵🇭 Trivia: Lolong was named after Ernesto "Lolong" Goloran Cañete as one of the veteran crocodile hunters from the Palawan Crocodile and Wildlife Reservation Center, who led the hunt. After weeks of stalking, the hunt for Lolong took its toll on Cañete's health. He died of a heart attack several days before the crocodile was captured.
