With Tennant's outfits, I think I prefer his blue suit/red converse combo, particularly the variation he wears in Silence in the Library. Also, I think Capaldi's red velvet coat from the tail end of series 9 is a top-tier outfit

Yay, I rarely find much blue suit love in fandom, so it's so nice to see. Back in the day, fandom seemed to only love the brown suit, so I wrote a fanfic honoring the blue one, as it's my personal fave.

I think a really great thing about Smith’s purple outfit is the length of the coat, too. First, long coats are almost always cool. Second, it’s really cool in how it accentuates all the turn-on-the-spots that he had such a tendency to do, it would always swing around him and just add that extra little bit to his already wonderfully exaggerated movements. It was a case of an outfit not just complimenting the wearer, but actively adding to the whole.

I feel like Capaldi's coat in those last episodes is also slightly different, just enough to really feel the progression. It feels just a tiny bit more velvety, a bit more worn and just a tiny bit baggier, and it feels to me like it makes a shocking amount of difference that he never buttons the jacket like he usually did with that first one. It really feels like it's his first, most iconic look but just more worn, more comfortable and more eccentric and free

I would have included Christopher Eccleston for being the first Doctor to wear relatively normal clothes. Although I liked the 6th Doctor's colourful outfit at the time, I was glad that they were getting away from the gimmicky outfits like the 7th Doctors question marks (including the umbrella). I give Jon Pertwee a free pass because whilst it was gimmicky (velvet and frills), it was also stylish.

It's not strictly to do with the costume itself, but the length of Peter Capaldi's hair between the two variations--going from the shorter, more neatly combed look to the longer flyaway curls--makes a lot of difference, too. It really feels like you can track Twelve's character development through his costumes and how comfortable he looks in them.

I absolutely adore Matt Smith's purple/ maroon outfit from 7b, it has that classical Victorian time traveler look you mentioned of Mcganns first outfit, but pulls it off way more naturally and gracefully

This was a really neat little list! You made it especially fun with your explanations of the little details like Capaldi's undone cuffs. For me, I can't quite rank them, but my absolute favourite (in terms of wanting to wear something like that myself) is definitely the Purple Matt Smith, I just loved it the moment I saw it and am still thinking of getting myself something similar. After that it's a toss-up between Tennant's and Capaldi's various outfits. McGann's were cool, too, love me some good ol' Victorian stuff! If we're talking iconic looks then I should say that I like every single Doctor's outfit, even Colin's hilariously bad coat! Well, OK, maybe with the exception of Tom's burgundy outfit, that one was just weird. Going all monochrome on a hefty look like that doesn't do him any service. It looks much better when he takes the coat off.

What I like about 12's hoodie/formal combo is that it is a nice contrast between his more aristocratic Time Lord air and his more loose rebellious side. At the same time the hoodie itself seems like an inversion of a more ceremonial hood. I also like Peter Capaldi's reasoning for his choices for all elements of his outfit in that all the pieces are generic enough that it's easy to cosplay. You can take any white shirt, and black coat (red lining optional) and bingo, you're the 12th Doctor. Same with 11, take any tweed jacket and bowtie and you're 11. Take any pinstripe suit and long brown coat you're 10. Now this is kinda tied in my main problem with 13's outfit, regardless of how it looks despite how it looks being intrinsic to this issue (you look fabulous in it BTW). In order to look like 13, you have to get that exact coat with the rainbow trim, that t shirt with a rainbow strip, and with the pants, they're not as specific but turquoise 3/4 pants aren't that common. So you either have to buy official merchandise or get someone to make it for you. With the latter, if you have a friend who makes costumes and you can pay them for the trouble that's good. But with the former you have to potentially give your money to the BBC. Now saying all this, neither is a bad thing as we buy cosplay items all the time for other characters. It's just that for the Doctor, whose thing is getting their hands on whatever they can find and making something work, it feels a bit limiting to the fans for whom Doctor Who is something they love because it is accessible. I kinda wish they found a middle ground between her official outfit and the one she wore in her announcement teaser with the coat and hoodie combo, maybe a pale blue coat (without the rainbow trim)with the dark blue hoodie. The rainbow T-shirt and the yellow suspenders are fine. (Personally I loved her in 12's outfit!) If you love 13's outfit and rock at cosplay then brilliant, it's just something that bugs me personally.

That's actually an interesting perspective on it, hadn't thought of it like that before. I started off hating 13s costume, its sort of grown on me a bit although those 3/4 length crop trousers still look a bit odd. She totally rocked in 12s old costume and the tux in Spyfall. At the moment I prefer the dark version of her coat from Once Upon Time to the standard grey one and its a shame the hoodie from the announcement didn't make an appearance or some combo as you mentioned.

Great video! Hard disagree about Matt's outfit though; I thought the purple jacket and waistcoat made him too stuffy and a bit out of place--like he was in the back end of season 7. My fav is his series 5 outfit by far. It's got a few quirks about it; the suspenders look great on the occasions when the coat is off, and bowties are cool. LOVE your cuff discussion about Peter Capaldi, and agree. I would add that the difference in the hair also made that look. One of the things I love about 12 is that how the length and wildness of his hair throughout his run is a good indication of his character arc. And YES to everything you said about Jo's Doctor. I was a bit surprised that 9 didn't come up. His outfit was such a departure for Doctor Who and a perfect signal that the modern show was going to be modern.

What i like about the twelth doctor's cuffs in his last episodes is that in twice upon a time at the end of his speech before the regeneration, the last thing twelve does is adjust his cuffs. I know it's a tiny detail and probably i should't think much about it, but i've always loved it

I think Capaldi’s outfits are top tier. Best is his Red Velvet suit I’d say. Ten I think always looks great, 11’s works rlly well for him thematically as well. Also Capaldi’s series 10 lie of the land suit is incredible. Tom Baker’s is rlly cool as well. Idek. Also can’t lie 14th doctors suit looks sick and Jodie with the Capaldi’s regeneration clothes on looks amazing.

Capaldi has so many killer looks. I recently re watched the Extremis trilogy, and I was struck by how great he looked in his "villain" ensemble for "The Lie of the Land." It's a bit drab for a full series, but It really worked for the story beat, and There was something about the angular, weathered look to the coat that suited him so well.

What's interesting about the Fugitive Doctor's outfit, in particular the shocks of colour, is they are intended to reflect Jo Martin's roots. The costume designer, Ray Holman, discussed it with Martin herself, and it was a route they wanted to go down. He actually did a similar thing with Mary Seacole, having subtler Jamaican colours in her costume. A lot of thought goes into it, and it's good see a proper appreciation for the skill and craftsmanship of it all.

Nice list. A lot of great choices. My own would be: 10. The Eleventh Doctor's purple outfit. 9. The Tenth's Doctor's blue suit with the coat (I really emphasize with the coat) 8. The First Doctor's full outfit (once it loses the cloak and hat, it immediately becomes much less interesting to me) 7. The Third Doctor in "Planet of the Daleks" (he has this really beautiful purple coat) 6. The Seventh Doctor in season 26 (his final season) (the brown coat) 5. The Fugitive Doctor 4. The Twelfth Doctor in "Extremis" (I love his more semi-formal style as opposed to his more...for lack of a better word...generic style. And I think that particular style worked best with the red coat) 3. The Fourth Doctor in Season 18 (his final season) (with all the burgundy, and purple, and the new scarf) 2. The Thirteenth Doctor in "Once, Upon Time." (the blue coat) 1. The Sixth Doctor (A specific variant is tough. The coat is constant, but the waistcoat and cravat changes all the time. I think, if I had to narrow it down, probably his "Terror of the Vervoids" costume)

My personal favorites: -The Fifth Doctor: I always though Peter Davison was a pretty snazzy dresser. His outfit looks costume-ish but not to the point where it stands out too much. He really pulls it off. -The Sixth Doctor's Mindwarp/Ultimate Foe/Trial outfit: The red/white checkered waistcoat, red cravat and pink watchchains have more of a matching color scheme and work with the coat better, creating a version of the outfit that's a but more...well, I hesitate to use the word "subdued." -The Eighth Doctor's TV Movie outfit: It really suits the character. Like he's a Jules Verne-inspired Edwardian adventurer traveling though time and space. -The Tenth Doctor's blue pinstripe outfit: My personal favorite of his. -The Twelfth Doctor's original outfit: It's like a modern version of John Petwee's season 7 costume.

When Time showed up as 13 but in a darker coat I realized just how much better that looked. Jodie’s look is fine but that dark coat really brings everything together and makes her look more mature, and I’m sad it won’t get a chance to be her official outfit. I love Capaldi’s velvet outfit. There’s something foreboding about it, which works extremely well in the final episodes of season 9. But as a whole his outfits are just really good and are a great look into his current state of mind at any given time. Love what you pointed out about the cuffs as well. I love what you pointed out with Tennant, I never realized all those little details. The coat is definitely the most iconic part for me, really brings it all together so I’d definitely include that. I honestly find Smith’s first outfit to be quintessentially The Doctor in a similar way to Baker’s. On top of the fact that I just find the look instantly iconic, I think it’s a perfect symbol of the contrast within Smith’s Doctor-somehow the most young and playful yet also one of the oldest and most experienced people in the universe. I’m mixed on his second outfit, in the same way I’m mixed on his second tardis interior. It worked well for The Snowmen but as a mainstay I’ve never quite settled on my opinion. I really like the War Doctor’s outfit, I think it worked surprisingly well as a visual shortcut to how long he’d been fighting. The 8th doctors outfit I always enjoyed but it definitely worked fantastic in The Night of the Doctor. I’m mixed on 7, for me it has a bit of the same issues as 6 where there’s elements that just feel a bit too try-hard. I’ve never liked all those question marks for some reason. Haven’t looked at 3 much, don’t have an opinion there really.

What a cracking topic - and video of course! I'm absolutely *not* into fashion whatsoever but I do love talking about the different Doctor's outfits, their variations and the thought processes behind them, when the topic arises - it does seem a bit of a niche so doesn't happen too often aside from the initial announcements - so this was really fun! I'm not sure I could rank them myself, they all have merits and perhaps most importantly signify each of their Doctors - some more recognisable than others at a glance. If pushed I would probably agree, 12s costume in World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls / Twice Upon a Time is really nice and 13 really rocks it, tatters and all post regen. But I knew you were going to put 4 at the top because its _the_ costume that everyone, even non-Whovians think of, the scarf! Its all about the ridiculously long scarf! As an aside, I could tolerate 6s costume sans the coat, the waistcoats underneath are bearable and just quirky enough to be Doctor-y but the coat is the thing that burns into the retinas!

I’m going to defend Six’s outfit, because, even it’s an unintentional meaning, I think it’s genius. Think about it, what’s Six’s core personality traits?: well, he’s arrogant, has a superiority complex, but primarily, he often judges others whilst being forgiving towards his own actions, and, to me, the outfit perfectly reflects this. Of course Six would find everyone else’s appearance bad and weird looking, but be completely unreflective and defensive of his own weird look. As for some of my favourites, I'd have to go for 4th Doctor season 17 look, a simple yet sharp look, very explorer, Capaldi's The Pilot costume, casual yet formal, his burgundy Heaven sent suit, flarish yet subtle, his World enough in time and Doctor Falls suit, much better than his original suit, Troughton's cosmic hobo outfit, especially with the abominable snowman coat, Matt Smiths purple/ lavender frock coat, Ruth Doctor outfit, authoritative on the outside yet exciting on the inside (much like the ruth Doctor herself).

You did a top job with this list. The fourth and fifth Doctors were 'my era' doctors, the ones I grew up with (just carbon-dated myself there!) so I was thrilled to see Tom Baker's outfit hit the top spot (that scarf is truly iconic.) I think one thing most of the outfits that made this list have in common is that they have a slightly 'steampunk' vibe to them, (the waistcoats and long coats, the rows of contrasting buttons, the tailored shirts and ties/cravats) which fits perfectly with a man who travels through time in a 1950s-era police box. And I think the third Doctor's scarlet and red combo is so ingenious because of the subtext it communicates. As you said, it's the combination of the scarlet and purple that feels a little subversive, and that's because it... kind of is. Back in the day, the two colours that were the most expensive to produce, due to the labour-intensity of obtaining the dyes, were scarlet and purple. As a result, only the nobility and royalty typically could afford to wear those two colours. But if you picture any kings, queens and nobles in their full regalia, you'll have them in EITHER scarlet and ermine OR purple and ermine - but not BOTH at the same time. That would've been considered vulgar and ostentatious, even for royalty. And I think that's the subtle message the third Doctor sends by wearing these two colours together - "Hey, I don't need to follow no stinking protocol - I wear both at once because I'm BIGGER than royalty!" Which absolutely fits the third Doctor's personality.

For the 8th incarnation, I enjoyed the later outfit in Big Finish. He had the shorter hair, blue jeans, a navy blue leather peacoat and a newer steampunk Sonic Screwdriver with the blue light. A decidedly more blue collar Doctor in line with McGann's vision and echoed with the 9th.

Four is always my number one, my Doctor, and my default image, the Doctor who was around on PBS and indie stations in my childhood. I completely agree that something about the Doctor's look should always be a little "off". Tom Baker down to a loose white shirt and trousers in "The Deadly Assassin"... be still, my 12-year-old heart. And Capaldi was always elegant, with hair to rival Baker's.

Even peter davisons slightly different outfit for his final season, replacing the off yellow cream jacket with the grey one and the new cricket jumper with thicker stripes on the stomach and cuffs. Capaldi's first outfit is great, and matt smiths purple outfit, ahh so many good costumes. Miss you're classic who reviews :(

Of course we all had fun speculating about costume ideas. That's when my teenage yank ass learned that _suspenders_ in UK vernacular is what locals here would call a _garter belt,_ while one keeps one's trousers up with _braces._

I might be the only one who actually prefers Matt Smith's season 5 outfit. I get why everyone loves the purple coat, it looks great. For me it looks a bit too good on him and the whole outfit is a bit too sleek for me. Yes, we got it at the end of 11's run, but I still think he is too all over the place and scatter-brained to pull this outfit together lol Also: I 100% agree with you on the uncuffed Capaldi outfit, I love that look, especially because it has this progression to the worn-out and battered version which he ultimately regenerates in.

I think elements which give a bit of flare when the Doctor is moving (read: running down a corridor) make a big difference. 10 and 13's coats, 11's purple jacket and, of course, 4's scarf. Honestly, one of my favourite single images in Who is from 'Utopia' where we get to see 10 and Captain Jack running together with their glorious coats flaring behind them. All that said, I think the War Doctor's outfit is my favourite because it's a blend of 8 and 9 but with little military touches that express what that incarnation is all about.

I don't have many opinions on classic era outfits. they were what they were. I am gonna give my rankings and opinions on the modern era outfits as I see them. 7: Ecclestone- I like him as the Doctor and I get the idea behind the outfit. I always feel it is meant to be like the PTSD look with the buzz cut, the dark colours, the tougher fabrics, the stompy boots and stuff like that it's meant to signal that he used to be a soldier its just missing some of the fun for me. 6: Capaldi 1- His general outfit from series 8. The more sleeker buttoned up look when we first meet him. I know that Capaldi took inspiration form 60's mod culture for his look but this one is just again a little too boring and plain. lacking in fun. 5: Tennant- I know he's popular and his look is cool the suit with the converse and the big coat I am just kind of over it. I think it's over exposure. Like I have seen so many cosplay's of this look I am kind of done with it. 4: Smith 2- The purple coat with the waistcoat. the more Victorian style look from season 7. I just don't vibe with it. while we still have the bow tie it just feels very generic Doctor look. 3: Whittaker- I love this look. I love the boots and the long coat and the top and the culottes style trousers. I know from interviews that Jodie based the look on an old photo she found of someone wearing a similar look and she liked that she couldn't tell if the person in the photo was male or female because there was a sense of androgyne to it and I get that vibe from her outfit. Also my comment on the initial photo of the outfit was featured in a magazine and that still makes me giddy to think about 2: Capaldi 2- The hoodie and the varied jackets and the check patters trousers and the sunglasses. It gives me aged rockstar vibes. Like Rod Stewart or Ronnie Wood or Mick Jagger or Brian May. It totally suits Capaldi's personality and I feel more evokes that 60's mod style vibe that Capaldi was going for. 1: Smith 1- The tweed jacket, the braces and the bow tie. This is exactly how I picture the Doctor. like a mad professor. It has that mix of whimsy and formality that I love and it totally fits that incarnations personality. For me it's just perfect.

Tom Baker's Scarf - I think the best part about it is that it resulted from a miscommunication. The BBC hired a knitter to make a striped scarf for Doctor Who, provided her with a bunch of wool and... She didn't realize they didn't expect her to use all of the wool, resulting in her knitting a ludicrous 13-and-a-half-foot scarf. (They removed the blue/grey stripe between filming two serials, meaning it's only that long in Baker's first season in I think Robot and The Sontaran Experiment) The rest of the changes because I find these quite amusing because there's a trend that then suddenly reverses - It was trimmed down to 12 foot for the following season, and then down to 10 foot for S14 (with a new version made to match, depending on the serial depends on which was used on location and which for studio shooting, but I get the impression the older version was viewed as a 'stunt scarf' by that point - worn for things that might damage the costume). Until this point it's gradually shrinking to be more manageable in size, basically... ...Then they made a new 17 footer - And wider as well - for the end of Leela's run in the show which was used for 3 stories, before conjoined the trimmed down 10 foot original and replica of it into a 20 foot monstrosity, before switching to the burgundy scarf (originally 20 foot but during filming it got stretched to 24 foot apparently) for the final season.

I’m so glad the Thirteenth’s costume is on here. I’m sick of all the hate she gets just because Chibnall sucked. Jodie Whitaker was a great Doctor, and everything aside from the scripts in her run has been great, especially her costume. I adore how high the pants ride, how high-wasted they are, the suspenders, the shirt all tucked in, topped with a gorgeous coat. Honestly, as a nonbinary person, her getup is just,,, _gender._ It’s really androgynous in a way that I love so much. I also agree BIG time with your take on the Eleventh Doctor’s costumes. The purple suit is leagues better. And personally, I specifically prefer the version with the vest. I was always SO attracted to him in Journey to the Center of the TARDIS when he went basically the whole episode without the coat, just the vest over the shirt and the slacks lmao

Also love the 5th Doctor's during his final season. Weirdly, some of your favourites would be in my "bottom 10" least favourite - Peter Capaldi's hoodie ( not Doctor-ish enough) as well as his initial costume ( too austere). Also not keen on Jodie Whittaker's or Jo Martin's and I always thought Tom's final purple outfit was a bit off, too. One of the (many, maaany, maaaaany) reasons why Peter Capaldi is also my favourite Doctor? He’s, basically, the first Doctor since Tom Baker to have a distinct *style* … but NOT an actual *costume* (I blame the notorious JNT for that change, which I found very silly and jarring at the time… and still do, honestly). I mean, post-Tom Baker, the Doctors have *occasionally* had a few, different coloured shirts or ties or something. But that’s just not the same. (And, yeah, I’m basically ignoring Smith’s near-total redesign, as it was just too short-lived… and, honestly, I just found it to be too abrupt of a change to make so late into his tenure.)
