10 ArtFight Tips from a Veteran

U wanna go, bro? artfight.net/~sled
yayy my once-a-year upload has come! this time we're talking about Art Fight (Artfight ? ArtFight ? What is the official way to say it ?)... anyway, Art Fight is an art trading game where you are split into teams with ~100,000+ people, 'attack' people with art, and defend your team's honor (and points)! There is a winner in the end, but it's not really competitive, it's just a big, fun art trading event. With the team reveal coming soon, I wanted to talk tips both for noobs and for veterans like myself. Man, I hope the teams are Tropic vs. Arctic as many people have theorized. If so-- Team Tropic all the way, baby!!!!
ok time to list the tips, anyone still here?
1. Have fun!
2. Character Reference Sheets - don't need to be fancy. don't expend too much effort on them, especially if you haven't started yet!
3. Old Art is fine to show, don't be afraid of old art!
4. Stretch your Wrists (or suffer)
5. Experiment with your Art!!!
6. Try to thank everyone who draws your guys
7. Keep character biographies / descriptions short, some of us struggle to read!
8. Keep lore short, but definitely have it there. A TLDR (too long didn't read) would work if you want to keep it super super short. if you specifically want lore art you should say that so people know if there's required reading.
9. Use Character Reference Sheets and the thumbnail icons to show off your beautiful guy's personality. (this will help people figure out how to draw your guy)
10. Do artfight for you, not for others. I think this mindset will make you prone to burning out quickly.
Did I really spend half of my video telling you to keep your descriptions short only to write this word soup in my video description? YES! I DID THAT!

My biggest regret with my first few artfight experiences was feeling obligated to revenge. if someone didn't have any designs that interested me, but attacked me, i'd dread drawing the revenge and then all of my artfight activity would grind to a halt. i got way more out of artfight once i gave myself permission to not revenge if i didn't want to. and that's not to say i don't revenge- a lot of the time, i do! i just don't

This popped up in my recommended and I was like “Artfight? That doesn’t feel very relevant, Artfight isn’t even- IT’S IN TWO WEEKS WHAT O-o .“ Somehow af manages to sneak up on me every year and I only remember it when someone posts something like this

Don't feel like you have to do full body or fully colored/rendered art pieces! obviously these things are worth more points, but if you're like me and a lot of the fun comes from the chance to draw a lot of different characters, feel free to do sketch submissions, or submit head shots. I've been practicing a lot more on poses and anatomy, but there are definitely days where it feels like my brain completely forgets how to draw bodies, or my hands get too shaky to make smooth lineart

Another tip for the bio, use bullet points! It makes it easy to get your character's personality across in a simple phrases. It's also helpful to add height, or at least generally if theyre short/tall, because sometimes its hard to tell. Good luck in Artfight everyone!

    Wonderful tips!! The stretching of hands and taking brakes are so underated but so necessary! I should make an actual tip video one day. ;v;

I will not lie, I almost dropped out with how so many people think it is ok to cheat in artfight. The excuses always rubbed me the wrong way. I plan on not doing much art for artfight, I know my limits.

Not my idea, but you can put extra lore/design notes behind a spoiler, so people can expand it if they want to read more, but won’t get intimidated. Best of both worlds!

Tip 8 is good for people who AREN'T like me who are extremely uncreative ESPECIALLY when it comes to writing, some of my character bios are just like "they exist lmao"

Eighth year on the side myself, and I honestly absolutely agree with the last one. As much as you want to revenge every attack you get or have an insanely high attack ratio, you have to go off of motivation to truly have fun during Art Fight. If you're not feeling drawing a certain character type, that's okay! This isn't a commission and there's no obligation to.

I did almost 50 attacks last year, would’ve passed 50 if not for Comic Con, and I can’t wait to do it again. Normally, I barely have any motivation to draw, but during ArtFight, my life revolves around drawing. I already have almost 90 targets, some of which I’ve already drawn mentally, and there are still two weeks to go. I think my main motivation is getting to make art for others. I enjoy that far more than making art for myself.

my only tip for artfight that i can think of is to just not worry about making full scale drawings for people. not all drawings have to be big and polished, sometimes it can just be doodles and that still works :) it's easier to burn out if you try to force yourself to make every attack look pretty and polished
