Great video! I was the guy that wrote Atlantis so was obviously delighted that you enjoyed it so much. It started as a Friday afternoon coding exercise where I used a non-intrusive hardware debugger that I had developed (that was my day job at Philips research at the time) to optimise a standard ray caster down to bus cycle level to get it fast and smooth. A standard approach would get 2 fps but Atlantis typically runs at 20 fps. I literally showed the demo (which used !borrowed" DOOM graphics at the time to Dave Mac at Philips Media and the rest is history.

Great to have you comment here, Atlantis is easily the best game for the CD-i on a technical level, would have loved to have seen that engine exploited further.

Hello Paul. Have you ever been interviewed about Atlantis? It would make an interesting article! Do you have an online portfolio with contact details?

Seriously though, I've always wanted a CDI but even today I can't afford one and just finding one that actually still works is getting harder to do. It would be an awesome console to own ☺️

I've watched a handful of CD-I based videos but I was surprised to see a few games I've never seen mentioned before. Atlantis, Tetsuo Gaiden and that first game shown off at 0:15 were all new to me. Unsurprising to see both Mutant Rampage Bodyslam and The Apprentice on this list, as well as Hotel Mario, which most CD-i videos often praise and mention it's unfair reputation. Great video and always fascinating to learn more about these less focused on consoles.

The Wand of Gamelon & Faces of Evil had some serious Narm Charm (look it up if you don't know what I mean by that.) "YOU KILLED MEEEE!!!" "Good."

If a Sega Genesis can run Wolfenstein 3D on bone stock hardware then the CDi can do something similar. I say this because the CDi is more powerful than any other 16-bit console on the market (minus the Neo Geo AES) and has a similar, albeit better 68000 variant as the Genesis.

You say "there is no jumping on their heads like in other Mario games" while the video proceeds to show Mario doing just that!

Zenith is an awesome game, best game on the console for me.

Coming from a non fanboy perspective The Apprentice genuinely looks great and Zenith looks fun! A lot of the other sprite based games seemed to move quite slowly. I can't work out is that's by design or hardware limitation. Atlantis might be a technical marvel but just one enemy at a time?

There's no sprite hardware or anything to help it along, it's pure CPU, a bit like the Atari ST in that regard.

CD-i actually has a more powerful cpu than 3DO. It definitely could run doom. (3DO has a new home brewery version available now btw. Full screen and good..!)

Seriously, this might be the worst game system of all time. I think we can safely throw out the "not even meant to be a game machine hurrdurr" argument unless you can find sales numbers for that stupid add-on you had to buy to play vcds on the thing, which is kind of another moot point regardless since noone cared about vcd in the first place. Photo cd? Are you serious? Using a standard 480i 4:3 crt tv? Yeah, no thanks. I would rather play Jaguar games using the Virtual Boy for a screen.

  • @theseob

No one cared for vcd? That’s why systems like the saturn, amiga cd32 also had a vcd expansion. Please look further than your local market. VCD was pretty huge in Asia, where it was the video system of choice for lots of years, even when dvd was out. Seeing the rest of your reaction, you clearly didn’t grow up during that period.

Also, i had one of the VCR CD-i's, one pictured in the advert. somehow they bundled mine with a controller along with the shitty IR controller, thing was a Glorified CD ROM with av out, i sware XD but, had all Three of the Zelda titles, Mario hotel game and Voyeur, which came in pack with the System. But it was not as bad as most people make it out to be, The CD-i, i mean not Voyeur. Voyeur was a shit tier game XD
