How liberating was the mind of a small child (the young Einstein). In childhood he dared to reject some useless courses in school and he even stopped attending them. I never dared in my childhood to express my negative judgments on those useless courses that I had to take in the grade schools; I only suppressed the hatred and attended the courses I utterly hated. But deep inside I wished I was as brave as Einstein and just stop attending them all together and only read and learn what I loved to read and learn. You see this is the difference between ordinary ones and heroes. Einstein will always be my hero. The man who mastered calculus in childhood and was a skillful musician. The man who revolutionized the science of physics and made us see the world from a different dimension. The man who rejected the presidency of a country and modestly based his rejection on the fact he wasn't good at dealing w/people. And we all know how difficult it is to deal with people, but we deny it, because we are ashamed anyone to know we have difficulties dealing w/people. But he showed us it is not a shame to have social difficulties; it's just a fact of life. Einstein was more than a great physicist; he was also a philosopher and psychologist. He was a clear writer too. I don't understand why after he died scientists took his brain out and examined the physiology of his brain, which they mainly hoped to find a larger brain (a shortsighted assumption of someone's mental capacity; size). And I don't understand either why people go in a museum today just to look at his brain (if it's truly his brain). I think it's a superficial way of observing his knowledge and ability by just looking at an organic substance, his brain. Knowledge and ability are inspired from the tangible world, but they can only exist freely in a different realm, mind. To look at Einstein's greatness one should only read his books and tries hard to learn his discoveries. His books are his recorded mind for us, not his tangible brain in a museum.

Very well put! Einstein is a perfect example as to why our education system needs a major reform. We should find out what a child likes and excels in and allow them to further their studies in the field that they choose. Had Einstein "gone with the flow", he would have been held back from making the strides and accomplishments that he was known for. I personally enjoy Einstein more as a philosopher than a scientist.. he was a very wise man.. his morals will never fade, ever. The things he said then will always have relevancy in every future generation. You're right, there is way more to learn from Einstein's words than what we can learn physically from his brain.

Top10Archive Thank you. On the problem of education, something revolutionary should be done soon. "Education" nowadays is not for enhancing minds any more; it's just for getting a "job". I think learning is an automatic and natural mental phenomenon, but before it happens there should be a personal interest in what every individual is motivated to learn. And there is such thing as self-taught(by using the books of the great people). But what initially moves one to go and pick up a book (without being compelled or having any sense of obligation) to read and learn is the necessity for learning, and without it no learning would ever happen. ("You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink").

+Top10Archive | Einstein had no morals. He was an abusive husband, sleezy womanizer and a dead-beat father. And oh yeah, he happened to also be a real hypocrite. Preaching world peace at the same time as he beat his wives...

***** Believe me, I could have lived just fine without the theory of relativity. And I have no need to praise a man, who bullied his wife into leaving him and let his young sons (a 10-year-old and a 4-year-old) live in poverty. And as for his second wife, she only decided to stay with him because he became famous, but he abused her as well... Nope, Einstein will get no love from me. I used to like him, but now I just despise him. It is one thing to have flaws, but he was a complete asshole!

Furienna I don't always think it's about loving them enough but it's about loving them in a way that is acceptable and augmenting for the kid as well as the parent. I understand E.'s son had some "issues": (it used to be called "problems" in my day) that made it difficult for A to relate to his son. I'm not fully aware of all these complex issues. Theoretically, one SHOULD love one's kids, but practically I've seen lots of regrettable methods of trying to show that love.

Furienna Thank you for relaying this story. I will always say that unless we ourselves were there, and/or we get reputable substantiation from those who were who have nothing to gain from repeating these things, we can't really know & understand everything. Great gifts are given and often great lack occurs in other areas of life: I know those with schizophrenia who are almost impossible to sustain relations with. Pardon my grammar, please. It sounds all so tragic. I had to abandon relationships with 2 people in my life who were diagnosed schizophrenic. Both were engaging, brilliant, and charming. Both became obnoxious, scary, & impossible to relate with comfortably when they ditched their meds, One young man committed suicide, & I had to take out a restraining order against the other. It is a complex, baffling illness for which we still know relatively little - still less so in Einstein's day.

I'm with Einstein. I see no reason to live if I can't take care of myself or have quality of life. What I'm seeing these days is people in their 60's trying to deal with an elderly parent who is 85 and over. My husband was 61 when his 90 yr old father passed. The stress for 10 yrs prior was overwhelming. My husband ended up with cancer so it made it twice as hard to deal with his dad. What this taught me was I'm NEVER going to do this to my kids if I can help it. I would end my life rather than burden them. I have a strict rule. If I can't wipe my own ass and I'm not going to get any better, I want to be GONE. I think that's more than reasonable.

He's the only scientist in history to do that. 4 revolutionary papers in half a year. Most likely others would be discovering one paper of their own. Then general relativity 10 years later was considered to be like 100 years ahead of its time and is considered to be one of the most brilliant things to ever come out of a human's mind. you must be ignorant. 2ndly, in 30 years, it's said they may have the processing power of our brains, but being creative, conscious, emotional, is a diff story and can be hard to speculate when such a feat can possibly be achieved or if even possible. However, i'm not really sure what computers have to do with any of this. LASTLY, and more importantly, how does anything you said answer "J.Sleeka's" comment? you're not too bright are you?

ah... so .... you do know that different languages pronounce words/names differently right? and "Einstein" is nearly the same in german and english ... i am assuming you do know that. that then begs the question: why the hell would you get upset about it??

2:37- If only everyone could have this philosophy. The elderly have started to overstay their welcome on this planet in the past 30 years, ultimately harming our access to resources and employment while marching the human race to its dreary end. If I ever turn 70, I hope I will die within that year. Otherwise I'll hopefully have the courage to commit suicide. The vast majority of people should not live past the 70-75 year mark, and that's stretching it. Medicine is only valuable in preserving the young and able; not the scared, weak, and useless elderly. I love and care about people, but I don't think that our current lifespans are natural or beneficial. It's rude for us to take more than we deserve.

And I think douches like you should be used for medical testing instead of animals potential harm shouldn't go to innocent animals. Just the really stupid sub humanoid creature the likes of you.

King Zork I think Dave Bryan is completely right. Don't get me wrong I love my grandmother and would be very sad if she died but the elderly have no use past 70 unless they are providing a significant amount to the community. Don't get me wrong though, I can't even punch someone I don't like without feeling bad but the elderly just take up space that could be used in a better way.

King Zork The vast majority of medical care in the U.S. is given to those over the age of 65. Every year, billions of dollars go towards preserving elderly American lives. This year, I witnessed my 80-year-old grandfather break his ankle, scowl, and involuntarily shit his pants in front of a team of doctors and nurses. He was humiliated, and ever since has wished for his own death so that he might join his belated wife in the afterlife, or at least just be dead alongside her. I don't suggest that we kill anyone; I only suggest that we accept death when it comes time. This 75+ average lifespan is a shameful result of a greedy indulgence in modern medicine. Unless, that is, you openly welcome a warm pants full of daily diarrhetic shit in your final years
