I love the observation and demo of Peter Hook. His tone is awesome. He uses chorus but never sounds like a bass player using chorus. He just sounds awesome.

I've been looking for this kind of content. Five Watt World-esque videos, but of more recent and less "classic rock" subjects. Talk about people and their gear, their history, and a showing a few demos underway. This was an amazing way to fill of 22 minutes of my day. Thank you.

The Roland space echo chorus that J . Greenwood's utilises was also what enabled Dave Fielding of the eighties band The Chameleons, his signature ethereal sound for which he was renowned also 😁 Like deployed 👍

Space echo is my favorite delay. I have three of the pedal versions RE-20, the RE-2, and the RE-220. I’d love to get the real thing, but they’re a little skiddish and need lots of maintenance, and cost a ton.

Oh at last - someone talking about the music and musicians I grew up with and loved. The one's who changed the musical landscape and our lives. Not the shredders and the technical geniuses - there are sooooooo many channels out there for them. But I had a rare 1960s Maestro Phaser with two controls - Balls and Speed - and two more bloody phasers and a boss distortion into a 70s Marshall Bluesbreaker. I created my own sound that allowed me to play and get away with it on tour regardless of how many drugs and/or drinks were inside me... It was all about making this unholy beautiful racket together with my best friends. We were tight as a ducks arse regardless of mine or the singers inebriation. It was truly post-punk and we never cared about "making it" and never did but... boy, we had a great time and I listen back to our recordings (high point a John Peel session lol) and feel proud that a bunch of dumb kids had so much fun with our clothes on. Oh and that Bob Mould sound - that was what I was chasing and still am. Kudos for your channel - subscribed as you are a rarity on KZread. Thank you for making the effort to make old post-punks like me smile 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎 PS: Johnny Greenwood's guitar tech offered silly money to me for the Maestro Phaser back in the distant past. No way would I sell it !!!

Hey Martin, welcome, pull up a chair, and all that! So happy to find people like yourself out there who aren't overly wowed by all the flash pyrotechnic types, and who still appreciate that generation of players and all the unique/innovative sounds they uncovered. You're in good company here! A Peel Session! Nice one...never quite got that far myself, but have a few friends who did. Still miss Peelie all these years later. What was your band called (if you don't mind me asking)? Oh, and someone I used to play with for a short time had a Maestro Fuzztain, which I think is from the same series that your Phaser was. @@discellany It looked like a metal cheese wedge. Was battered to death and had these wheels on each side for the Balls and Speed, which you could adjust with your foot while playing. A quite incredible pedal that defined my sound for years. Can't play that part accurately? Turn on the Maestro and headbutt your guitar a few times. Crowd loved it haha !!!

Cheers! Proper "Soft Focus" uses some parallel tricks, I think, so not just a single chain of one-FX-into-the-other. I thought I got the vibe of it fairly well, but it was maybe just a bit "spiky" sounding compared to the real thing. D

I'm always amazed how ubiquitous the Big Muff sound is, even outside of grungier/heavier music. Lots of use of it in a soul/funk context too. I find the Muff very tricky to dial in properly, but when you get it just right, it does indeed rule! Cheers, D

The MXR Blue Box/ Distortion Plus/ 6 Band EQ became a sound employed further by Warren Ellis from the Bad Seeds and Dirty 3.The original Germanium clipping components in the D+ have changed substantially over the years. Reuss makes a Rowland Howard sort of tribute pedal.

Yeah, I modded by D+ for a little more bass response (input cap swap), and I threw in an extra silicon diode (it was Si to start with) to tweak the distortion character and squeeze a little more volume out. I've been sorely tempted by a few of those Reuss "artist" series pedals. The Spacemen 3 one (Fuzz and Vox Repeater Trem) looks great, and I like the sound of the Steve Wynn one, too. Cheers, D

Yeah, outside of tape-based flanging in the studio, flange was really "the" new pedal effect of that post-punk era, so you can see how it only took one or two guitarists showing what you could do with it (McGeoch, Levene...heck, even Andy Summers) for it to really connect with people like Smith. I notice you like your Filter’Trons! My No. 1 guitar is an heavily modified Gretsch Electromatic Jet. I’ve gone from high-output humbuckers (in my youth and heavy metal days) with a Fender Twin (which I used as a pedal platform), to the Gretsch with a Vox AC30. I play far more acid-rock orientated tunes now, and along with an army of pedals, this rig sounds stellar. I find Filter’Trons incredibly versatile; with a flick of a switch, an adjustment oft the volume/tone knobs, and a quick change of pedals, I can go from razor blade-chainsaw punk rhythm guitar to gorgeous, melodic, Knopfler-esque tones. I’ve another (semi hollow) guitar loaded with P90s, which I also love for 1960s-type Beatle sounds, but she doesn’t tough my Electromatic for sheer versatility. I’ve noticed Filter’Trons are enjoying a resurgence in popularity over the past 5 years or so, especially.. While it diminishes my uniqueness, I’m glad to finally see other guitarists, especially studio pros-recognising this underdog of a pickup for its inimitable qualities.

Well that was fantastic.Obviously a Labour of love. It takes a lot to talk tech for 20 minutes & hold my interest. You’ve picked 8 of my favourites (never moved by Radiohead) Funnily enough I was thinking of doing my favourite Jangle guitarists ‘Marr’ ‘Deebank’ ‘Verlaine’ ‘Reilly’ etc...which would have just been me holding up some record sleeves & talking. Safe to say after watching this that video that is now on the back burner. I’ve always been intrigued how Poison Ivy got that strangled sound on The intro to The Cramps ‘ You’ve Got Good Taste’ but I guess that’s just technique maybe. Bob Mould does something similar just before the chorus of ‘It’s not funny anymore’ Again, brilliant video.

Cheers. Between the guitar recording bits and all the editing, this one nearly did me in! Bit of a balancing act too, as I could have got bogged way way down with all the nuts and bolts of the technology of flange, chorus and tape delay. Radiohead aren't exactly a massive favorite of mine either, but my wife loves them, and as a consequence I've developed a grudging admiration for a lot of their stuff. Greenwood is rather good. Honestly, just go for it with your own video. There's a lot to be said for being able to talk at length without descending into the "ums", "yeahs", "kindas" and "y'knows" the way I do. I could honestly edit this stuff in half the time if I were a bit more "fluid" in front of the camera. Poison Ivy? Not sure. I know she's a SuperFuzz user, but I think that bit you're talking about might be all in the fingers. All the best, D

Good vid…I found to get a half decent JAMC sound is the Big Muff and a wah on full treble. Closest I could get.

Yeah. I can see how that would work...full treble on a Muff gets quite painful, and that notchy filtering of a fully cocked wah will bring some of that inherent nasal middy thing you get with a Companion or Superfuzz. I'll have to try that with the Sovtek Deluxe Muff I was using...it has an extra footswitch for more mid control (boost or cut with sweepable Q), which effectively recreates that "wah" filter thing. @@discellany yeah the full treble is a real ear-splitter but with bass underneath mellows it out a bit with the semi-hollow fantastically feeding back all over the place. I think the Reids used more than 1 guitar on the recordings anyway. Thanks for the reply, mate.

The Earthquaker Devices Terminal fuzz is a circuit clone of the Shin-Ei Companion with a wider range of gain and a master volume, and I can confirm that running it into a wah will curl your teeth... In a good way.

@@discellany I did, in fact, use the Terminal as a bass fuzz in a math rock band I gigged in over a few years! It was pushing an Ampeg B2R head through an Avatar 1x15 cab, and it had enough bite and cut to keep the big speaker from farting out or getting muddy.

Never sure what fuzz I'm hearing and where with Shields, to be honest! He used a lot of Fuzz Face type circuits too (those Roger Mayer "spaceship" ones), and that huge board of his is a bit tricky to "decode" on a song-by-song basis. Cheers, D

The Fuzzrite works best for single notes, lower output pickups and/or turning down the volume on the git.

It's a signature version made by Tym Effects in Brisbane, Australia. They've done a couple of versions, and they tend to build in small batches and go out of stock quite quickly. Yes. Either a stereo chorus pedal early on, or a harmonizer rack to double/chorus/detune (with a small delay) across a pair of amps/cabs run in stereo. I hear less "overt" chorus in his newer stuff, but I think there's still some doubling/thickening with a little detune applied. Cheers, D

I use the Fredric Super Unpleasant Companion (or I would, if I had it) which is a switchable Superfuzz and Companion in a slimmed down wedge enclosure. Great pedal, with no volume drop! Cheers, D

I think you may be right! There are a few in there I remember him demoing...the Geiger Counter, definitely! Of those I can identify, I have owned one or two of the less "exotic" ones over the years (the Ring Thing, and the Zoom Ultra Fuzz are popping out), but I have to set myself limits! D

really nice video, but OMG @8:27 i had a flashback that Ibanez brought me right back to the Guitarstore mid80's , i wanted it so bad (first guitar) but it was out of my range, still remember the smell :) edit: funny @10:09 that is the guitar i bought a year later (candy red with binding) when i played in a somewhat successful local band (japanese reissue with single coil in neck, you must have modded it)

Thanks, and well spotted! Yeah, it's an '87 Roadstar II...great Japanese build quality, and the most ridiculously skinny neck of anything I've ever played! Seemed like a good fit for a Mould demo (midway between his Ibanez Flying V copy and the Strat he ended up switching to). And yes, the Tele is a Japanese custom reissue from about 20 years ago. The neck pickup was really microphonic and I got the modding bug a few years back...that's a Gretsch HS Filtertron in there now, and I think it works really well with the classic Tele bridge sound. D

That's probably going to be a bit much! I swap things out a fair bit, and I'm in the middle of a mini clear-out. I guess I have a few simple rules... (1) If you're a big reverb/delay user, then don't skimp, pay what you need to get the sound you're after (2) Go cheap with drives/fuzzes/distortions. The circuits are usually so simple that they're just not worth the boutique pricing. (3) Analog chorus/flange is way better than digital in my opinion A handful of specific pedals (but not all!)... Delay: Absolutely love tape echo sounds, and not playing in a band right now so don't need tap tempo...Belle Epoch Deluxe just sounds/feels perfect to me (the preamp is KEY to this), plus I've had bigger digital delays with lots of deep-dive menus, and they just end up annoying me. Reverb: Neunaber Stereo WET...3-knobs, deeper options tucked away behind an app (set and forget, basically), great range from mild to spacey, TRUE stereo...plus it sums to mono, meaning you only have to pull out one cable if it's end-of-chain and you have to switch to a single amp setup. I will never change this one out! OD/Dist: WH Red Lllama - bright, gritty, fuzzy, not mid-focused, superb mild breakup sounds, my "go to" drive...Hotcake - a DIY clone, run low as a boosty drive, I like Voxes and it likes them...(a specific one here) Animals/Ninevolt I Was A Wolf In The Forest Distortion - not sure of the circuit but Marshally sounding, thick, good low mids, none of that trashy tubescreamer high end, great stacker, cheapish...DOD 250/MXR Dist+ - again cheap, easy to build, boost-to-fuzz, nice character, another great stacker Fuzz: Not into Muffs, so I'm gradually selling off the few I have. A good trashy 60s-style fuzz is always nice...Fuzzrite, Superfuzz...but I don't use them a ton. Quite like Fuzz Faces but they're a bit finnicky about placement...I've got a homemade Si FF that works fine for me when I need it. Mod: Like stereo chorus and the old Arion SC-1 is cheap (plastic!) but sounds phenomenal. The Mooer Elec-Lady does the EHX flanger thing absolutely perfectly, so no need for anything fancier. ALSO... Don't really get on with pitch-shifting stuff. Don't use Wah. Like Orange Squeezer type compressors (all mine are DIY kits, all work a treat). Don't have an EQ currently (used to), but will probably pick up a cheap 7 or 10 band one sometime soon. Always use an isolated power supply (a cheap "Fame" branded one...it does the job). Is that OK? Sorry I can't be more exhaustive...lots of other DIY/kit stuff in "the drawer" (tonebender, harmonic perc, treble booster). Cheers, D

Incredible. Not only do we have similar taste in music but we also have the same pedals or kind of. I only use Vox amps, plus DOD250, MXR Flanger (because John McGeoch), Boss CE-2 - both analogue, I have a Marshall type drive pedal too, only boutique thing is my Belle Epoch, etc!! Also own a Tonebender, Red Llama and Harmonic Percolator but they don’t get used much! I tend to prefer Tubescreamer and Blues Driver (because John Squire, Robert Smith, Billy Duffy and Swervedriver). Boy oh boy. Thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciated!!

@@matthewpollard2843 You're welcome! If you use Voxes and haven't tried a Hotcake, then you owe it to yourself to try one. Mine's built from a pedalparts kit, and I can highly recommend it (if you're OK with DIY). To me they have a little of the Blues Driver sound, but the tone control is specifically tuned to Vox amps mid-frequencies. They will do a blown out fuzz at high gain, but they really excel at that boosty-edgy driven sound. Flipped so much stuff over the years...Source Audio, Strymon, Hudson...but I'm fairly comfortable with what I've got right now. Trying a "slimmed down" board at the moment...6 pedals max...going easier on the dirt. My tinnitus has been a bit of a problem lately, so dialling things back, not stacking drives, is giving my ears a bit of a break (after a lifetime of abuse!) Cheers, D

I’m the same again, slimming down after quite a few years, sticking to two overdrives, 2 modulations and tape delay. It’s probably cos we are the same age, same generation. There are a few albums / bands I haven’t heard (of), but generally we come from the same background of Peel, NME and melody maker. I started around 1987. Been playing guitar since then too after a gig by The Mission in Bradford. Not sure where you’re from but I’m northern from the days of Wedding Present, Pulp, Cud and Age of Chance. Really like your videos/channel there’s not enough indie, especially when it comes to gear / demos etc. the Mooer stuff is all great in my opinion, great drives, I have the Rat clone, compressor and analogue delay and used to have others. It’s cheap as chips too and they sound great. Cos I’m an 80s indie kid I guess that’s where I started, around 1989 I got an amp and first pedals were Boss - chorus and blues driver. They’re still some of the best pedals out there. I also have the turbo overdrive Johnny Marr played in The Smiths (not his, just the same pedal). Belle Epoch is even better than other delays that company makes in my opinion. Thx for the tip about the Hotcake I’ve never tried that!

It's a cheap SX JB copy...I think they call it their "vintage range" or something. The bass player from Khruangbin has a much modded one in yellow, but mine's all stock bar a new set of strings. Cheers, D

Yeah, the pickups and playability are very good. Only black mark for me are the electronics...nasty taper on a lot of the pots. One of these days I might bite the bullet and put a whole new wiring harness into it. Cheers, D

Some viewers out there like to view a list without "spoilers", whilst others prefer skipping to the bits that interest them. On balance, I think if you're the kind of viewer that is happy to skip, you're probably okay with skipping without chapters...whereas adding timestamps spoils it for those who prefer to watch a list "reveal" as it plays out. That's how I see it, anyway. Cheers, D

To be honest, I'm very mindful that the channel stays mainly music-focused and doesn't become overly guitar-focused. I'm really happy to operate at that crossover point (and the analytics suggest that a lot of people appreciate that too) , but I don't want to tip over fully into "gear" videos. Plus, I don't consider myself a good enough technical player to pull that off full time! Cheers, D

@@discellany Ok. That’s fair enough. I see where you coming from now. There’s not a whole lot on new wave post punk and the technical/gear side - not as much as rock/metal for eg (about which there is waaayyyy too much). Although this is partly ‘cos there was a total ‘don’t care’ attitude in some cases re. which guitar or amp or pedal is used. I remember back in the day there being one band who never ever brought any of their own gear to a gig. And by that I mean I think the drummer brought a pair of drum sticks and that was it.

Yeah, I seem to have accidentally hit on something which is working for a lot of people here! I'm trying to stay music/player,-focused, to just try and illustrate what it is in the gear that they use that contributes to their specific sound. The idea was to appeal to folks who maybe aren't musicians, and give them a window on FX and equipment that wasn't too nerdy...hence the odd "tech warnings" to flag up where I was sailing a bit close to that sort of thing. And yeah, many punk/post-punk musicians were such novices that they stumbled onto stuff by accident, creating a signature tone by sheer luck. I can certainly appreciate that. The first pedal I ever bought was a Boss Flanger...picked purely because I liked the purple colour! Cheers, D

Ha. Yeah, just one of those Twitter things that was always gonna get picked up by the "blues lawyer" crowd that tends to congregate at the TGP. Just Steve being Steve! D

I remember seeing MBV back in the day. Probably the only gig that made me feel ill! I guess i wasnt taking the correct drugs to appreciate them. I saw Dinosaur Jr in a small club. They really should have brought less amps. My ears were fatiqued two or three songs into the set! I saw Sugar at an open-air show. I dont think i realised how much i idolised him until then. Still only have about three albums from his entire career though.

MBV were the one live band I saw back then (the Loveless tour) that properly affected my health. It took me a good few days for my hearing to return to anything like normal. I was genuinely a bit scared at the time. The only other band that came close to that (for me) were Godflesh, who felt like they were pushing those "brown" frequencies, if you know what I mean. Actually, a Bob Mould solo stuff rundown would probably make a good video, now I think about it. He's quietly amassed a really big body of work post Husker Du. Cheers, D

@@discellany I finally saw MBV just prior to the pandemic and there was high volume/ear protection required notice posted at the entrance to the venue. The only other shows I have been to that had this affect on me were Laughing Hyenas and Hammerhead back in the 90's. Cheers!

@anrque Yeah, that '91 Loveless tour was carnage in comparison. No warnings, no protection...the mosh pit literally cleared during that extended "Death" chord section in "You Made Me Realise"...people backing away to the rear of the venue, covering their ears and wincing. I've never experienced anything quite as painfully loud before or since. D

Still got Joy Division, Siouxsie (Juju), Big Black and Pailhead from the good old 80's. Well, the 80's weren't that great but a good band stands out when the rest is ladida...

excellent use of english to describe the sounds. never easy

No need to warn pedal freaks about tech issues. It's good for a laugh, though.

A sound cannot be iconic, as an icon is an image. This mistaken usage has been spreading rampantly due to KZread creators mimicking one another's speech. That said, this is an excellent video.

Thanks. Can't say I've really thought about the etymology of the word, "iconic" before using it, but it's not something I picked up off other people on KZread. Not at all. The usage of the word has broadened over time to encompass more than just imagery, even though that is the source of it's "correct", original meaning. The first dictionary definition a web search turns up is... "very famous or popular, especially being considered to represent particular opinions or a particular time" ...I think it's pretty widely applied beyond visual comparators nowadays, and most people recognise that. D

Thanks. I'll look into this a bit further. Everything appears fine for me in Chrome on Windows 10/11, so I'm thinking it may be something to do with mobile devices/OSs. D
