    Wonderful video. Remember cold air flows downhill and is trapped. It accumulates & becomes progressively colder in the valleys and canyon bottoms. That is why Big Bear and Baldwin are so much colder than when you are driving along the hillside slopes, on the way up. The same is true down the backside where Lucerne can be as cold and sometimes even colder than BB. Wind also plays a role. A breeze mixes the air and does not allow it to settle, even though it may make it feel colder.

  • @TroutWest

    @TroutWest

    4 жыл бұрын

    The interesting thing about that... is the lake itself can be 20* colder on the east side of the lake than the west side, same elevation. It's all about that air flow! Wind compresses air, flat bowls trap it. East big bear is the coldest, although not that cold compared to other spots I fish.

  • @TroutWest

    4 жыл бұрын

    6'6""-7'6" ultralight rod... 2-4 lb test. Look up a sliding egg sinker setup on Google image. Use a 2-3 ft leader. Your choice of number 16 treble hooks with powerbait or number 12 mosquito hook with gulp egg. Important to use scent. Try bang garlic spray. Fish the east side of the lake....pro tip is to make sure if you use powerbait to roll debate like a worm and keep it small no bigger than 1 inch. I prefer the gulp egg on a mosquito hook method.

    Hey man, I don't know if you'll be able to get to this or not... but where do you park during the snow? Assuming the roads are plowed and there's no parking at Juniper.

  • @TroutWest

    @TroutWest

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question and it's really hard to park during the winter because of the big snow Banks created by the plows. you have to just look for areas where you can fit a car as long as you're parked off the highway and away from where I plow needs to go you will be fine. A lot of locals and tourist is still punch holes in the snow bank along the north side to find spots. there is a strong chance you will have to walk a little bit farther to your actual fishing spot because of where you park. currently the snow has all but a hundred percent in melted along the North shore except in a few areas so you will be good for the next two to three weeks probably unless another cold storm comes in. The next storm is supposed to be warm again not much snow.

    Nice rainbow, man. I'd brine and smoke that sucker. Quick tip though, if you take a small paperclip and bobber and hang it on your line between two guides, you will detect bites more easily. Bobber shoots up or drops down, depending where the fish swims with the bait.

    I don't like putting things on the line or rod for bites.. I watch my line at all times. I'm aware of all the doo-dad tricks you can do for bite indicators but i'm just not a fan of it. I can see using reflective at night, but i only do a night fishing trip a few times a year. In general I'm watching lines... no issues detecting bites. Thanks for watchin'

    Are you using barbed bait hooks for catch and release? Isn't that not allowed and all but guarantees the fish will die when you rip the hook out and then release it.

  • @TroutWest

    @TroutWest

    4 жыл бұрын

    These are single Barb mosquito hooks.. being more gentle on the fish. This is why I use mosquito as opposed to treble. If you watch my channel you will see most of the fish the hooks are easily removed because the fish does not swallow the bait. In the case the fish swallows the bait, I remove the bait with pliers and release the fish with the hook. I use non painted hooks which will rust out in about a week. No it is not illegal to fish with barbed hooks and release fish. Also, Big Bear Lake does not have a barbless artificial restriction. While it is possible that releasing a fish after being caught will die that is possible regardless of the hook used, as some fish may die simply from the fatigue of being caught or improper handling of the fish once it is caught. unlike keeping a limit of 5 a 100 percent of that limit will die as opposed to a very small portion of the fish i release will die. In the thousands of fish I have caught in the last year I have only kept 2. In The last 5 years I might have kept five total. That's probably 10000 fish I have caught and released in that span and kept five think about that.

  • @TroutWest

    @TroutWest

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a very good question I don't think it's that they don't like lures but I do think the fish habitat there can create a feeding pattern that makes the trout prefer a bait over a lure. I Fish 90% spoons when I'm on the water.. but I have noticed over the years the spoon bite at Big Bear has been less and less active. Regardless of the water im fishing I will always use the most effective method... Whatever gets em is what I have out there. I do remember going there and throwing spoons and catching a couple hundred a day at Big Bear though it's been awhile since the bite with lures has gone wide open. I'll be up there again very soon I'm thinking it could happen then

    It wasn't easy! I've lost a lot of fish before this one smaller to learn how to get this one in on 2lb. It's a combination of rod length,Rod being UL,Reel being good quality, drag set right and not horsing him in. I do a lot of salmon fishing so that helps you learn patience on hard fighting fish. I only "Lift" to make ground on the fish, I don't just reel. When the fish pauses on it's fight, I lift up then reel down fast to gain line. IF it fights, I let it run but keep tension
