We have a GH Hybrid Limited on order, and have read a ton about it. In the case of hybrid models and the gas tank, we’ve read Toyota designed it to designated 0 miles to empty with about 3 gallons still in the tank to protect the hybrid system. I guess if the tank is completely empty it can greatly damage the hybrid system. So it is a ~17 gallon tank, but you’ll be filling at most 14 gallons due to that hybrid protection reserve.

Agree with the sunroof thing, wish it would just shut instead of vent. JBL sound is great. Vehicle is amazing. very responsive, smooth, and comfortable. I have the exact same car, model, trim, even color (not that that matters.) 11:42 The auto-dimming headlights will dim when someone is approaching you going the opposite direction, not when you’re behind someone. The car senses the lights from oncoming traffic and turns off the high beams. If you have auto dimming high beams on and you’re just behind someone, you may be accidentally flashing the brights into their car. Great video!

We're on the same page. The point I was trying to make is that I'm getting flashes from both directions. Folks on the same side of the highway, when I pass them, think that I have my high beams on because the low beams are either/both 1) too bright or 2) are angled too high and are blinding them in their side/rearview mirrors. I don't touch the lights at all, I just let the auto-dim do its thing.

Great video, we purchased the Hybrid Limited in Sept and we're getting about 32 MPG average. We also have the same issue with fuel tank capacity and have never been able to put in more than about 13 Gallons which is frustrating on long road trips as we are only getting a little over 400 miles till refill. The Limited does not come standard with a hitch but it's available on ETrailer. The 110 volt 1500 watt inverter is great. We recently had a extended power outage and was about to pull out my generator when I remembered the outlet. Ran a full size frig for about 4 hours with no problem. I have so far driven it 380 miles (50/50 city/highway). It indicates it has 94 miles to empty. This is because I picked it up with a full tank of gas, capacity at 17.2 gallons. If I tally up all the numbers, I get an average of 27.6 miles of fuel economy, which is nowhere near the advertised fuel economy. Can you comment as to why the numbers are so different?

  • @Nealman24

    @Nealman24

It's because when it reaches empty, you still have somewhere between 2-3 gallons in the tank. You'll notice this when you go to fill it up because your pump will stop after 14 or so gallons. That being said, you're probably averaging the 35mpg that's on the sticker.

Thanks for a very meaningful review. I am getting my GH limited hybrid in mid April without any markups and I am very excited about it. I test drove a turbo 4 but did not get a chance to drive a hybrid. My question to you is whether the hybrid is good enough for a family of 4. does it feels fine to everyday drive or struggles to cruise on the highways.

Thanks for the question! For our family of 5 it works well and is our daily drive. As I've mentioned in some other responses, it's not a powerful vehicle but it's adequate. Placing it "Sport" mode does help add some lower-end power. We've really enjoyed our GH so far and hope you enjoy yours!

As to the fuel tank concern, some of the manufacturers calibrate their fuel level sensors to show less than what is actually in the tank. This keeps you from running the vehicle out of fuel and potentially burning up the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located at the bottom of the fuel tank and the fuel in the tank keeps the fuel pump cool. My 2016 Ram 1500 has a 32 gallon tank in it, but the most I have put in the tank is 27 gallons.

I have a Telluride. It's great looking (much better exterior design than the GH imo). It turns heads. Good power and handling, pretty good feature set for the price. HOWEVER, it feels cheaper-built and less refined than the GH. And the biggest potential issue is long-term reliability. KIA has come a loooong way in terms of reliability, but the Telluride in particular is seeing too many issues being reported by owners, some major and some minor, but LOTS of them. I like to keep vehicles for 20 years, and I don't think the Telluride is built for that. My wife and I just yesterday put down a deposit on a GH XLE hybrid and can't wait to make the trade. The interior is a lot nicer in the GH, feels more refined. The ride is smoother, but I do think I will miss the power and handling of the Telluride. It handles like a much smaller vehicle.

If I were you, I would never let the gas tank get below a quarter or half empty. The reason being is the fuel pump is in the gas tank and the gas keeps the fuel pump lubricated . If the tank gets too low on fuel, you are doing harm to your fuel pump. Also if you are out on the interstate and the traffic backs up because of a accident or etc., and you are there for a long period you may run out of fuel. It's just a good habit to never let the fuel light ever come on. Keep plenty of fuel in your car. Just words of wisdom from a old retired mechanic.

Quarter sounds okayish, but never letting the tank get below half empty is absolutely hilarious. 😂😂it’s just beyond reasonable. So basically fill up more frequently than you would need to charge if you had an EV. Absolute BS and super funny 😂. I wouldn’t hire you as my mechanic.

I never let my tank drop below a quarter full, and it's usually above a half. I've been in too many accident backups, hurricane evacuations, and power-outage situations to want to risk it.

I just want to add that I’ve owned a 97 wrangler, 2010 Mazda 3, 1995 4Runner, 2018 4Runner, 2010 tundra, and 2020 tundra. I run them all until range says single digits or zero about every tank and have replaced 0 fuel pumps.

You think the Grand highlander hybrid is worth getting over the highlander hybrid as a 3rd SUV since we already have 2 SUV'S 1 which is the highlander hybrid and another is the RAV 4 Hybrid!

  • @Nealman24

Hey! That's tough to say because it depends so much on your needs. We have 3 kids and dogs and needed the extra room. We were also coming from an SUV that was getting 16mpg. When you consider that it's only an $800 difference between the Highlander Hybrid and the G-Highlander Hybrid at the XLE level it's hard to not make the jump for the larger of the two. In your case, you already have two really nice, fuel efficient cars and one can seat the same amount of people. That being said, I'd be hard pressed to add it to what you have unless one of them is getting old/high-mileage. Hope this helps!

Our normal highway route during the week we average around 70mph. I would guess we average about 50/50 city/highway in a normal week. Hope this helps!

I really appreciate your review of this car, but 1 thing you didn't address which I find most important is the 3rd row room. I currently own a 2023 Highlander, and I find it only useful as a parade car for amputees. I wouldn't put my worst enemy back there. .

Very insightful! I have seen tens of videos from auto reviewers but its great to hear from a real user and wr need more of these! We are considering a hybrid limited (only for the parking sensors, otherwise xle seems to be plenty good). With it packed with people and luggage, did you feel the hybrid had enough power to accelerate reasonably onto interstate ramps? We are also thinking about a small cargo trailer or an overhead storage rack. Wanted to get your thoughts on how that impacts the acceleration and potentially mileage. Thanks!

Hey! Good questions. Even with it loaded down with 2 adults, 3 kids, 1 puppy crate and the luggage rack it still did a decent job accelerating. I think the CV transmission helps with this because it's not losing momentum in shifts. It is reasonable enough, even loaded down. Hope this helps!

@priyathankonda7789 I have the hybrid limited with the brnch seat. Its a family of 5, but even with 2 or 3 visitors at the 3rd row, you still get enough power. You can switch to sports if you need more. Not sure of the non hybrids but my limited hybrid is smooth and quiet. Good luck!

@@yawk1683 Are we talking "Max Limited" or the regular "limited". Its confusing how Toyota chose to name these to mid level variants in Hybrid :). I am interested in the regular high fuel economy(32 combined) Limited version , family of 5 as well, but was wondering how the lane mering off ramps and highway / up hill passes are in terms of acceleration .. Could you give insights ?

@TreBonjour @TreBonjour Mine is the Limited hybrid. The best part for me is the panoramic moonroof and panoramic view monitor. For lane departure, off ramp and hill passes, they are just normal for me as I usually use it to pick up the kids from school, and travel for recreation. However, if you need more power, then I will highly recommend the hybrid max. I hope that helps and at least answered some questions.

It's not bad. Like I've mentioned in other responses, the hybrid in general feels a little underpowered in the GH but we bought it for gas mileage, not for power.

Good question. I paid sticker for it, the dealer was willing to waive any markups. XLE Hybrid with a few factory options including all wheel drive, pano-moonroof, all-weather floor mats, and clear coat protector brought the price to $49k.
