Thumbs up if you think Pullo was one of the greatest motion picture characters ever.

The wonderful actor that played Pullo passed away in 2023 the last thing he finished was Star Wars Show Ahsoka in which he plays a Sith Lord. He was quite good in that show as well. RIP Ray Stevenson.

Titus Pullo was a real man briefly written about by Julius Caesar. All we know is he was a centurian that was an incredible warrior that went full Rambo mode trying to outdo another centurian Vorenus.

He was so cool. And simple. He had simple wants and needs which resonates alongside Vorenus’ strict “catonian” approach. These guys were so different yet so similar man. The story arch with Caesarian being Titus Pullo’s kid instead of Caesar was so awesome….best series ever made. Shame it only got two seasons….

I thought Mark Antony was the best character, but Pullo was the most relatable likable
One of my favourite tv series. Shame it was only 2 seasons

Ran out of money:)
Dr Goldsworthy, I first became familiar with your work as a freshman high schooler in 2002 begging my mother to buy me a hardback copy of your The Complete Roman Army. It's quite surreal to be sitting here as a man in his later 30s watching your work on KZread reviewing one of my favorite television shows of all time. Thank you for all your work of all forms of media.
The Genius of HBO's Rome was that it portrayed Rome as it was. Gloomy, dirty, filled with all kinds of people, slaves, criminals, crooks etc. Before the shining glamour of the empire, there was the grim Republic.

Grim republic indeed. The shabby and rapacious actions of the boni is on full display.
Can't believe it is already more than a year since Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo) died.
Huzzah! This is what we've all been waiting for!
Horrible how season 2 got the treatment it did. I would've loved to see Octavian's ascension fleshed out more. SHAME
I have learned me about Rome since I first saw the series.
Rewatched the two seasons multiple times..great show.
What a treat! One of my favorite shows reviewed by one of my favorite writers.
hhYes. my favorite show of all time. And they did a healthy bit on gangs kinda with the Collegia. Not Claudius and Milo but made up people like Memio and Erastes Fulma. But still its a major theme
I viewed the US release. Despite its flaws, I was pleasantly suprised, and impressed how well done the series was overall.
I'm glad to see you review this. James Purefoy's Antony stole the show - his "disease in your soul" scene with Vorenus, which is just half grunts and blowing air though his lips, is gold. David Bamber's Cicero is quite good, as is Tobias Menzies' Brutus, if a-historical as you say. Ciaran Hinds' Caesar is ok, though I wish a younger Patrick Stewart could have played him . Hated the Sopranos-in-the-Aventine second season storyline. Anyway, this was the best depiction of Rome I can expect to see for a long time, so I enjoyed it. I look forward to you reviewing the whole series; rest assured I've been watching your other, more series films, too. I wonder if you'd care to do some kind of review of Colleen McCullogh's Master of Rome books. As much as I hate to admit the influence of historical fiction on my usual meat-and-potatoes approach to history, she was my gateway to Roman history. And, truthfully, these books have colored my baseline take on things, especially her pro-Caesar outlook. Thanks again; cheerio. Give Augustus and his sister (? - I couldn't quite catch the name) a nice treat for me.

I agree - he had an absolute ball playing that part and his joy transmitted to the viewer! Casting perfection.
Been waiting for this!
Love that you’re doing this AG
what an amazing treat for us all, Adrian.
Been looking forward to this. Thank you!
I’m ready for this series. LETS GO!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next one!
Thank you for tackling this subject sir.
I loved that series.
YES!!!! This is excellent. So looking forward to this series! Thank you for doing this!
Looking forward to the rest of this series
I enjoyed the series, and now greatly appreciate your analysis of it. Looking forward to the next video.
Very much enjoyed this video. It's so interesting hearing a true expert on the field talk about the series. Very much looking forward to future episodes!
Yay! I was hoping this would come about when you mentioned it in one of your other videos. Funny enough, HBO's Rome was the spark to my interest in Ancient Rome. Caught the pilot episode, got hooked, eventually went on to read historical fiction and gradually included more and more scholarly books to get the actual history. Been going strong for about twenty years now and it just keeps getting more interesting. It would've been interesting to see Clodius around (what a character, LOL), but I quite enjoy what HBO's Rome offered. Just enough of the political maneuvering and military aspects to whet my appetite and gorgeous sets and costuming to boot. Vorenus and Pullo definitely sold the whole battle buddy/bro aspect. The music was excellent, too - cheers to Jeff Beal for that! Can't wait to see more historical delving, Dr. Goldsworthy! :)
Rome was my favorite show ever made and it paved the way for huge budget Shows like Game of Thrones.
Oh wow, these broadcasts just get better! I loved Rome - a real indulgence - and can’t wait to hear AG’s deconstruction 😊
I look forward to further instalments. I love this show, but it's great to have a proper historian point out what's not factual.
RIP Ray Stevenson
At last!
Hi Dr. G, just wanted to mention the writers found out they won’t be renewing se3 half way through se2. I also thought the portrayal of Agrippa sucked. Thanks again for the content.

Republican period after the end of the second Punic War when they begin to interact with the Hellenistic world. Maybe a series where Polybius is the main character.
Dr.Goldsworthy mentions Brutus, someone we don't typically hear much detail about...Now I've read: "Brutus the Noble Conspirator" ( 2017, Dr. Kathryn Tempest) but I'd also welcome Adrian one day giving us his insightful detail on the man.
I use Episode 1 as the introduction to my Roman History class, to give the students an impression of the colour, vibrancy and life of Rome. To show that it was not white marble statues.
They originally planned for 5 seasons, not 3. They intended for an entire season to focus on Marc Antony's time in Egypt, but the show was cancelled during either pre-production or production for Season 2 due to the excessive cost of the series and expectations that the audience would shrink between seasons. This resulted in them condensing the events of the last 3 and a half seasons into 6 episodes and recasting Octavian to convey the time skip. Also the show runners wanted to do some dumb movie about Pontius Pilate and Jesus but that was separate from the plan for the show.
34:01 I remember the scene where Scipio introduces his daughter Cornelia to Pompeii, she does remark that her presence at the theater is inappropriate bc there was a nude actress on stage. Also, while the show does portray a lot of sex, the upper class are often in their own homes or sneaking off to accommodations with blind workers, all of which I took as the show noting that in Roman society it was important to not be seen as a person controlled by their passions publicly but in private they all acted like…humans. Seems quite plausible and as true back then as it is today.
I Claudius intro please!! If I make it will you use it?
Long series you say? Good
It's a very hit or miss film, but there was a half decent representation, of the impact of The Siege of Alesia, in 2001's Druids, starring Christopher Lambert, Max Von Sydow & Klaus Brandauer, it had a lot of extras as well, though sadly they didn't really have the budget, for proper battle scenes/costuming.. Brandauer's Caesar is pretty good at least (you can probably find it free on KZread)
The censorship is so strange.
I loved the show its perhaps my favourite, but like all TV shows they use dramatic license, why was Augustus (Octavian) so strange cold and and calculating? hats not the impression i have of him, ruthless yes, but very agreeable, Atias character while highly amusing was totally made up, i don't hold against them however
I watched IT also largely given how hyped IT IS by Roman enjoyers , i Had Higher expectations and was underwhelmed but i should have took the hint that this was Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones. The Sex and violence came to me Off very tryhard edgy and IT IS annoying that you rarely See legionairies despite having Characters that are legionairies but they are Most of the time civilians or deserters
BBC edits out the political bits?! Thatcherism writ large, ie declining standards all 'round.
