What a damn shame. I guess this explains the 5 year hull warranty. Takes 6 years or more to rot. Up until this moment, I’ve considered this the perfect retirement boat. Now, I’m wondering.

Wow! That’s really disheartening. Especially considering that the boat isn’t very old. And hasn’t actually seen much time on the water.

Sorry if I missed it. Did he ever go into detail on how this failure occurred? I have owned 2 C-Dory's and while I am not a fan of the Balsa Core I have not had any construction/hull issues what so ever with either of them. On one occasion I had some questions and called them and I was amazed that I was able to get a technical resource on the phone who spent 15 or so minutes with me. I hope he reached out to C-Dory to give them a chance to assist in some way. Please elaborate on how this happened as it may help other avoid a similar issue be catching a potential problem early on. Thank you for sharing!

Not sure what he found, but that area of the floor is around and under the water tank, located under back seat. He's in the the northwest, perhaps water supply froze, expanded and slowly leaked? Fitting?

This really bums me out. So sorry for you. I just went through a lot of hassle and expense with this type of problem in a 38’ sailboat in the main deck. I was looking at getting a used C-dory. But after this, I don’t know. Why in the world would they put balsa core in a location like this?? Thanks so much for showing this to us. Will do more research. Is this freak? Any idea where the water got in.

Check at the C-Dory Venture. It's 23' and is made of composite with zero wood in the construction. C-Dory are fantastic boats, that is why there are usually no more than a dozen used ones for sale in the US at any given time. Best wishes to this boat owner. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I built the 22 to many years the glass interior tax face seat is my design that is a common examination spot we could never figure out why

Huh?

Man that is heartbreaking! Sounds like you guys did so much research and due diligence prior to purchase and still fell victim to the unforseen. I too have been spent many years research ing and have settled on a c-dory or ranger tug but stories like yours scare the crap out of me.☹️

Sorry for the late reply. It has definitely been eye opening to say the least. It's so tough to balance cost and style, and the risk is real if you choose wrong....

I have a 1989 22’ and haven’t had any problems, definitely a fluke incident. At some point an operator error was made, maybe previous owner or slow drip through time.

Is this a common issue with the C-Dory?

What ever happened to your boat?

Does C-Dory make there boats out of wood?

To date they are still balsa core composite & fiberglass for all the standard models. Ventures are composite core & fiberglass. I bought my C Dory 22 last Fall after I first saw this video 2 years ago. It's a 2003 so 21 years old now. It sat outside in the sellers driveway for 20 years. It is solid as a rock and have had zero issues so far. You won't find a better boat with a 7 inch draft(8inch draft with full tanks and 8 folks on board). I appreciate you posting this. I stomped around the boat everywhere before we bought it. Bought it in 24 hours after it was listed. They don't come up for sale often. I say go for it to anyone on the fence. CBrats site really got me looking. I pray you and your wife figured this issue out and have made memories on your Dory. God bless and thanks for sharing your experiences with us. 🙏
