1 of 289! Steve's 1972 Oldsmobile 442 W30 X Code

In this video, I am fortunate enough to get up close and personal with one of the rarest Oldsmobiles ever made.
This 1972 Oldsmobile 442 W30 X-Code is 1 of 289 and is absolutely gorgeous. For 1972, the X Code in the car's VIN meant you got a 300 horsepower 455 big block. As such, it's one of the only W cars that you can verify by the VIN alone. This car is particularly badass with a matching numbers Muncie 4-speed and 3.42 positraction rear diff. Steve is a super cool, down to earth guy and he loves his Escape Machine.

    So glad I have held on to my 1 of 289 1972 W-30 X code for over 40 years. I will always be a teenager as long as I own it. Factory 8 track player where he has added gauges in front of console. Flame orange with black hood/stripes. Great car Steve. I appreciate your passion!

    Just finished watching the video and I can attest I felt the same way. Although, 442s are my favorite, a 70-72 GTO was my first bucketlist dream car I lusted after before 442s eventually won my love. However, since it was the first car I committed to one day owning I bought one anyway instead of a 442. I slept, breathed, and drank GTO as a kid in the 90s. I dropped out of high school but then said “ what the hell am I doing” bc I knew without a education I would never make enough to own one and it would always be a pipe dream, so I enrolled back in. Long story short things worked out, I’m 38, and 2 years ago I bought my 4 speed 72 Cardinal red GTO, and balled my eyes out driving it home. I remember putting the radio on and Jimi Hendrix was playing on the radio, it was like I stepped back in time and I just lost myself like a little baby. I could not believe I got it after so many years of fantasizing of owning one. I got over it though and sold it, now I’m off to get a 442. Well, I had two kids….so maybe a vista cruiser.

    Hi Guys: Man I appreciated every bit of this video on Steve's 442. I can. relate to every detail that you fellows talk about on this drive. I have a 1970 442 convertible that I purchased in 1976 for a $1000. it was my primary car for many years, my three kids grew up with out driving, only riding in it; lol I knew it had to much power for turning it loose to them to drive. I've only kept it maintained and gave it a professional Cranberry red paint job, I am totally exilerated every time I drive it. Watching this vid of yours has inspired me to go out and dust mine off and drive it today because it is my eighty second birthday. Have a great day.

    I first got an Olds in looked like an old mans car, by the second day I noted the power and the stiff handling, the sway bars are as thick as the one ton dodge we had, car will never lean, made like this from the factory. Being a sleeper I fell in love still have it today. It is really hard to explain but I know what this guy is talking about.

    My father owns one as well except it doesn’t have the fin. His is emerald green with white. His is 1972 Cutlass Supreme 442 W30 with 455. Automatic with side shifter, White inside, power windows,power door locks, racing seat belts. He has brand new (from 72) front and rear bumpers still in packaging. It was hit by old man with big Cadillac and slightly dented both bumpers. Thanks for the information. Car is special to me as it was my birth year.

    wow wihat a great Car and awesome owner who really appreciates n loves his car very very very much, I love the Viking Blue n white Color combination, and love that he drives his car n enjoys it n isn't shy to get on that motor sometimes, Imo Oldsmobile is the best riding car n the motors just flat out go n is unbeatable in reliability, but they handle in a way that is such a joy to drive in a way we become part of the drive as become one going down the road the car n driver is meld perfectly together, so may Oldsmobiles i have owned n ridden in has proved that time n time again ! Great car !!

    I literally grew up with cars like this...my father was Service Mgr at Cen Cal dealership for 20 yrs...many, many times Service Dealership #1 for SF region..use to go with him to San Leandro training center for GM training...He had tremendous driveability team...GM would come too him for field feedback...anyway can remember early 442's as well as the first Toronado's on driveway.... GM sent them to him to drive and report back...my GOD...He would drive the living hell out of those machines and I was in the passenger seat... early 442's would lift the left front wheel off the ground...=replacing second gear in four speeds...years later my 69 Nova with 6cyl...he installed 400 small block with W30 cam...special ground cam from friend in Detroit...would then blow "f...ing" doors off everything around...at time in school in S.F.S.U...2 a.m. trips home to valley would race vettes and firebird's across the bay bridge...The feeling of seeing the vette's and the bird in the rear view mirror still lives...we would literally race over the Altimont until everyone parted ways...This is a beautiful car, so glad he own's it!

    A 455 is 30 over on a 400 block. I wished I knew why, GM or Cadillac already had a 502 big block, why didn't Olds just use a 502 on the W30's and Hurst Olds? I believe they are the same size about. An Eldorado I got my license in the 502 sure yanked that heavy Cadillac around with ease. The Eldo front wheel drive will eat the front tires which had to be replaced often.

  • @danhoyland142

    @danhoyland142

    Gm rules said no higher than a 455 in a intermediate body. Before 1970 it was 400 ci that was the limit. Hurst cars got a 455 bc of a loophole since it was technically a hurst promotional car.

  • @etmesi

    @etmesi

    Жыл бұрын

    @@danhoyland142 I know why GM used Hurst because in those days were rag tires burnout easier. Younger people were actually Fatally crashing GM didn’t want the liability. The large Cadillacs ended up getting the 502 but those cars were heavy.

    🤤🙈 definitely not. 65-67 were a 3.975" stroke and 4.0" bore. 68-9 were 4.25" stroke and 3.87" bore. 68-9 400s were garbage. Only good to come from the 68s were the forged crank to run in the 455. RPMs were a death sentence for the later 400s.

    Is this car a Cutlass or a 442 ? It has Cutlass S emblems inside and 442 on the outside. I guess you have to check the numbers?

    It's a 442. The 442 was an appearance package after 1971, rather than its own model, but this has the X in the vin meaning it's a 442 with the 455 engine.

That intake manifold don't look right and where are the red inner fender wells ? I'm thinking the X is a Cutlass but badged 442 with 455c.i. but not as powerful as the true W-30 performance package for insurance purposes... This car really don't make seam right at all ... @@peterrivney552 As far as we can tell, it is a W-30. It has been modified over the years (it was originally brown) and the motor is not original, but as far as we can tell it's a W-30.
