【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

Love it! Such huge characters and just absolute expressiveness is amazing to see.
Me and the dogs sit down and watch the Otters every time there's a new video our three boy dogs sit in front of the TV and just watch intently they are so interested in Hana and Kotaro. Thank you for sharing the story with us by the way we are watching from Dallas Texas USA

Kotaro is definitely the brains but Princess Hana is the beauty. She has the most beautiful face. 🦦🦦🇺🇸
What I love, other than the two funny otters, is how Japanese channels mostly avoid showing human faces. Unlike in America where the creators have to be talking constantly and sticking their faces into the camera, Kotsumet is all about the Otters and nothing else. Love you all, happy 2022!

It would probably put the otters in danger if their location could be identified. It's a sad world we live in.

It's been three years since I first learned of the wonders of Otters; the first video was 'Otter baby Kotaro looks for toys'. Since then I've recommended 'Kotsumet' to people in my life, simply because of the joy these wonderful creatures bring. They've helped a couple of my friends through painful times and for that alone, I'm so very glad I joined youtube. The community that has grown from watching Kotaro, is incredible, you guys are awesome!😎💕

I'm from Brazil and we don't see otters around here. It's interesting to know that in your culture otters can be pets. My husband and I are following Kotaro and Hana and we're loving it!!! They're so funny and cute 🥰 We're otter lovers already ❤️

I discovered this channel one year ago and I was fascinated by Kotaro and Hanna and by their caring , lovely parents. In Europe we have mainly cats and dogs and I came to love these wonderful intelligent little creatures , otters, due to these videos.It is impressive to see their habits and the education they get in their lovely family, the comfort and joy in life !!!❤❤❤

Fascinating is the word! I don't really like seeing otters kept as pets but I think these two have a pretty awesome life, they're well looked after and seem to enjoy the comforts they have in life. Smart creatures too!
This is also the story of Kotaro's mighty eyebrows. How they alternately got shorter and then longer over the last four years, but never lost. They always come back, lol :-)

Is it just me or does Kotaro seem highly intelligent, even more so than a usual otter? With the amount of tricks he’s learned and how he interacts in specific situations that require ‘critical thinking’, it seems he’s smarter than average.

I don't think so, I mean he's not dumb, but highly intelligent ?? Bingo when was presented with different challenges you could see that he's rethinking whole thing and looking for solutions. Also Hana is smarter. Kotaro can't open the door to garden and he resorts on Hana's help, cause she knows how to do it, also she's faster to grasp stuff that their parents present to them, like that illusion rug, she pretty fast get that's a bluff, while Kotaro was still scared.

They don’t call him “The Professor” for nothing...he definitely looks like he’s lost in deep analysis at times. Otters in general are pretty smart, he just gets that look on his face
I just received my Hana and Kotaro towels and coffee mug! I LOVE them! I also want to point out how much I love ordering anything from Kotsumet. Everything came so neatly and carefully wrapped. Ridiculously, neatly and carefully wrapped. My OCD is satisfied for the month! Its a long trip from Japan to the US, and everything came in perfect condition and even with Swag! Love the stickers! Thank you for taking such great care and sharing the cutest otters ever!

My body felt like ive been beaten by a whole team of american football players! I thought my second vaccine shot was terrible. The 3rd one is even worse! 😂
