On a quiet residential street in New Delhi, this monumental circular aperture sits within a square brick screen. This architectural intent defines the project as an apartment building developed by a family for private use.
The facade of this building could be seen as a response to the context or a reflection on materiality. Inspired by Louis Kahn's form-making was the act of puncturing seemingly vast brick and concrete walls with soaring geometric voids, creating dramatic shadows as the harsh Indian sun made its way through the sky.
Principal Architect Amit Khanna explains the design concept behind this residence located in Safdarjang, New Delhi.

The round jaali facade finally breaks the builder designed monotony cropping up almost in every colony in Delhi. I love the inner courtyard as well, a rarity in Delhi. With the facade, my only issue is the dust build up on this....how to tackle that on a regular basis.

The design is simple yet so elegant. Also like the concept of separation of the area into two, allowing one side as a passage of cross ventilation and light. Only doubt is regarding the top lighting spaces in the bedroom, in summer months of Delhi will it not produce excessive heating ?

I love the building. But I very much hate the fact how every building in the neighborhood look so different from each other. There is no common architectural feature and almost looks like it was made by a kid playing a city building simulator. This is very much a problem caused by the ignorance of Municipal Corporations.

Even after spending crores of rupees you are getting such congested houses with a view of electrical wires and a building like 20 feet away from you I mean Jesus Christ this is a waste on money in MY OPINION.
