i got the same issue but in my case was the PCV leak under the intake manifold

Thats crazy that a dirty/malfunctioning maf can make it sound that bad did you have any issues soon after the fix? Also did it progressively get that bad ? Did you have a hard starting issue mine cranks about 5-10 times before it starts also have hesitation while accelerating. I cleaned the maf seemed to make it better for a day or so. Any tips ? New diverter valve for boost ? New maf ? New n75? Or will a bad/ dirty maf cause all my issues?

Yeah, I can't believe it either. This was by far the worst I ever heard it sound! Replacing the MAF is what fixed this. I can't recall having to do anything else. You should also do a scan if you have VAGCOM and then look the codes up on ross-tech. It's likely you have a bad MAF. You might also have a fuel pump that's going out. I had an issue where I couldn't start my car on occasion but it didn't hesitate at all once it started. It took me forever to find out it was the fuel pump.

I have the same problem with my 1998 passat. The idle is bad when I first start it but quickly goes away after a few minutes of driving. But I also experience intermittent engine hiccups while driving in the highway specially driving up an incline in highspeed. I've had this problem for about 2years. Thanks i'll check my MAF maybe that's the problem.

Yeah Rex, I would try and VAG-COM scan it for errors first. I've replaced all sorts of stuff on my car. The MAF definitely helped my situation for now. My car has given me so much grief over the years no matter how much money I throw at it. It's a wicked bad habit. Good luck.

I didn't feel bad, because the engine runs normal as you started it. I was sure it was something else and not your engine that is going out. Glad it runs again. 👌

+Austin Sadler Yeah, I replace the MAF and that fixed it! I wouldn't advise anyone to start their car when it does this. Sketchy as hell! The car is running way better now and my mileage is up,etc! Also, it's not throwing those codes anymore except for 00779 outside temp.

What was the problem now?

Umm, no it wasn't but the tensioner was going. I drove the car quite a few thousand miles after this video and had the timing belt replaced Summer on 2k16. My mechanic did say my tensioner was barely functioning when he did the belt so you might be partially right. This issue was due to a failing MAF.
