1/8 Acre LAWN-to-GARDEN CONVERSION: Part 2 - Ep. 261

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ever since finishing the renovation of the Meadow House-it's been my dream to overhaul the "backyard" lawn and turn it into a gorgeous garden. The lawn area is around 1/8-acre, which I think many people with small plots can visualize. It'll be our attempt over the next two years or so to take out much of the lawn and convert it to garden space. We imagine this will be a series of a half dozen or so videos documenting the process-and we've already gotten started-though we're at the beginning. Here's part 2 to our original video, which can be found here: • LAWN To GARDEN: Our Pl...

For so many plants, it is said: First year sleeps, 2nd year creeps, 3rd year leaps. It’s so hard to wait, but you have planted tons and all will grow. you both have done so much to your property. All the hardscape and renovations, all the trees and plants…it will be beautiful and get more beautiful each year. Bravo.

This is very inspirational -- I'm currently working on a similar project converting lawn to beds and getting that grass out is quite the workout!!!

Unsolicited suggestion: one or two massive oak, maple, or other canopy trees south of these new beds to provide shade. Ooo also some paper birch for dappled shade. It would feel like a park ❤

I'm so excited to watch the progression of this new garden area. Beautiful selection of plants! You forgot to mention fragrance as another dimension of experiencing the garden (not a criticism). You have already included several plants that will delight your olfactory senses: peonies, roses, and the actaea. I grow the Itoh peony 'Bartzella'. Soft buttery yellow and a wonderful fragrance. Your editing, narration and quality of your videos are stellar! ♥♥♥ Thank you for the pleasure you both provide. I am a very early subscriber (when you only had a few hundred subscribers). I recommend your channel to anyone who loves to garden!.

When I’ve installed new beds and don’t have enough cardboard, I’ve resorted to using Red Rosin paper, in a double layer. It’s very economical.

My man does the edging too. I've accepted that some jobs just go faster with man strength.

I love your flower and bush choices. The bees are already visiting. Does the slope of the lawn, prevent rain from soaking into the ground at all? The shaped gardens should be happy to catch some of that. The peony looks happy. My Mom had several gorgeous pink, rosy and white peonies, on the West Side of the house. I guess that the ants crawling all over them, took care of them well. The peonies caused no work. I've never found a perfume, or soap, which captures the scent, of a real live peony. There are some from Great Britain, but they haven't captured, that for which I am looking. Wishing you lots of power, to finish that project.

For in ground beds, I think deep edging every year is necessary. So if one has a lot of edge, a power edger like you have might be necessary.

Y only 1 of each?... More interest in design using multiples of a plant family near each other, than only 1 lonely plant here and there. Or is this a botanical type experiment? Planting edibles for humane consumption is most important as well as 4 the pollution. Ann, Florida

You use so much compost its enough to justify by bulk. Much cheaper and easy to move around. If buy in bags.. just by the cheapest brand. You will not see any dufference.

Except for invasive species that displace and destroy ecosystems, I think eschewing all non natives is a bit silly especially around our very unnatural suburbs. I think your approach of giving emphasis to natives is the right balance, but not being strict purist. After all humans are the biggest invasive “non native” species (outside of the African continent I suppose) that does the most damage to ecosystems.

There is a septic tank in the yard. Even if you place the rain garden at the opposite end, you can still get bacterial and fecal contamination through the groundwater at that distance. I would love to see a rain garden somewhere else on the property.
