1:4 Mississippi River, Logjams, First Sail, Lake Bemidji, River Mile 1306-1279

On day 3 we make it to the house along the river where we've stored our second canoe. We spend the night with a nice couple people we met through a paddling group online.
On day 4 we continue on down the river. We finish the last few miles of logjams and then suddenly find that the river changes when it gets to Bemidji. We cross Lake Irving and Lake Bemidji, try a bit of canoe sailing for the first time and meet some cool people on our way to camp at Stump Lake.
There's a pretty good demo of our JBL speaker just a couple minutes into the video.
Sailing happens at 10:13
After our first attempt sailing we've started to learn a bit. We still don't have a mast but we use what we have to improvise a downwind sail. We use a hula hoop and a pvc rain jacket to try and catch some wind crossing Lake Irving. The design still needs some work but it's worth trying again.
Please help take care of our watersheds. Never litter and always pick up trash when you can. Everything heads downstream.

Awesome! I added a double blade kayak paddle to my canoe for big water. It made things much better.

There are a lot of good ways to get out and do smaller trips too! Don’t necessarily have to go too big

You found a body?! Okay so i looked it up. Does the Assiniboine flow west out of Lake Winnipeg? Just met a couple at work last week who highly recommend looking into doing trips up in Canada

Yes…. The Assiniboine meets the Red river in Winnipeg!! We did about 40-45 miles to where we were picked up…. 6 of us - 3 canoes …… back in late 60’s or early 70’s…..

I was wondering what the hula-hoop was for till you set it up. Good idea. I have used a golf umbrella with decent results.

I've heard good things about umbrellas. Somebody apparently crossed Lake Winnie, over 10 miles with a big yard umbrella

The folks you were talking to at the end on the pontoon boat, made me think that a trip down the Mississippi on a pontoon boat would also be fun, for the less athletic. Start in the area you were at today maybe....

If you have a trailer for the pontoon and someone to help you get it around you can pull in and out around the dams! The locks don't start until St. Paul but i'm almost certain pontoon boats are allowed through the locks, that would be great! I also want to try that someday
