I bought the other version of the Mini Hobby kit with the beehive island. I also noticed the inaccuracies that you saw. It is essentially a reversed engineered copy of the Tamiya kit. The parts are all the same but the island does have a beehive. The rest of it is only correct for the 1981 and beyond. It comes with Mk 29 launchers and all the sponsons, phalanx guns, masts and radar of the version you have , none of which was present on the earlier version. So I am facing a good deal of scratch building to correct it all. I have bought several photoetch sets. Gold Medal makes a decent set as well as a set for the grated tops for the 4 aircraft elevators. The Eduard sets are the most comprehensive. I served on Enterprise and made the deployments in 1976 and 1978, the last times she had the beehive which is my motivation for the build. Good luck to you on your build.

wow an honor to meet a person who served on the enterprise. at last i found someone who is also building the mini hobby kit . when i was at the shop there were both the normal version and the bee hive version. i was standing there for very long thinking which to get. the bee hive version was even cheaper probably due to unpopularity. finally i decided to get the normal version but sort of regret not getting the bee hive version which is more unique and plus it was cheaper. anyway i have to proceed with what i have. yes this is a sort of reversed engineering kit from tamiya. they probably bought the tamiya set and measured all the parts and machines the tooling. but they are smart to make some changes here and there to avoid copyright issues. since i have build the kitty hawk from trumpeter which is a newer kit from 2015, i noticed a lot of parts from this enterprise being bigger like the phalanx mk29 life rafts etc. if i know the real dimensions i would measure these parts to see which is more accurate. but the parts are nice and it does fit nicely with some sanding and cleaning. i’m having a ball now cleaning every single parts now. about photo etch yes eduard is most detailed and accurate especially the nettings on the deck and sides. it’s a folding PE in angled shape compared to white ensign or gold medal which is just a one flat strip of netting . i have t bought the PE yet. i very tempted to get the star fighter deck decals. the main landing strip line can be painted easily but the red and yellow lines on the elevator decks would be almost impossible to paint. that’s why i’m thinking i need the decals. how far are you in the building? have you stated assembly and paint? i’ll be doing cleaning for few more weeks i believe. hope you start posting videos so we can compare notes. i will sub to your channel. since you served on board you must know lots about this ship. for me i have never even seen the real thing. anyway let’s keep in touch and go along the build together. thank you for your comments and a real honor to meet you .

That’s my theory. Just like hobbyboss and I love kits are all under Trumpeter. It’s common business strategy to break up into many smaller companies.

  • @modelar705

Hi. Yes it does not have radar domes. this kit was designed in the early 80s so it depicts the ship during that era. If you want the newer version in the 2000s you can get 3D Wilds accessories. Hope that helps. Unfortunately, there is no kit that is in the 2000 onwards version for the 1/350 scale in the market. You will have to modify it yourself.

@@lesleyrusson1303 as for decal you can try Starfigther decals. they produce lots of decals for ships and carriers but the problem is those decals are only for deck and island. if you’re building interior hangar bay you can go for David scale modelling decals but it’s not so complete. L’asernal produce the best hangar bay decals but it comes with entire hangar bay parts at 200 USD. that’s why i copied their decal and printed it myself. coming back to 3D Wild printed parts, i think you can get the entire island parts for year 2000 onwards version.
