1/2 The Aztec Double Headed Serpent - Masterpieces of the British Museum

• Masterpieces of the Br...
Episode 6/6 An examination of an Aztec ornament depicting a double-headed serpent, carved in wood and covered with turquoise mosaic, which is believed to have been worn on ceremonial occasions. No one knows how the piece was discovered or made its way to Europe The turquoise mosaic of a double-headed serpent is one of the most alluring objects in the British Museum Mexican Gallery. Made over 500 years ago, this icon of Aztec art is admired for its symmetry, beauty and colour. But it is also chilling and disquieting: those perfect curves end in teeth--and those teeth absolutely mean death.

I’m glad y’all appreciate Mexica art but could you maybe give it back to Mexico? Also it wasn’t very cool to imply that the conquistadores were the saviours of anything, and on top of that the Aztecs never thought of him as a god. The gifts they gave him were more of a cultural flex than anything. P.S.: you pronounced Cortés’ name wrong. It’s pronounced “bastard.”

There is always some SJW jacka$$ in these posts, cluttering the place up with their cheap, self-glorifying calls to "return" it to whoever. There are some artifacts that should be returned to their proper origin or owner - this is not one. There are exactly zero reasons to return this particular piece. You seem unclear on the purpose of a museum. But I get the feeling not knowing something doesn't stop you from running your mouth - you just make stuff up. For example, you have no idea what the Aztecs thought of those Europeans. You weren't there, and unless you found Monteczumas' diary with "definitely not gods", you have no way of knowing. Lastly, you seem upset by Cortés, and I really have to wonder why. Was it because he was a brutal, violent imperialist conquering territory and extracting wealth and slaves from those he subjugated? Seems likely - which would be hilarious, because that's exactly what the Aztec were doing, themselves.

@@constantinople777christens5 No, they did not. They only replaced those with their own "sacrifices" which were far more cruel (and in the name of God). Have you ever seen the machines they would use?? And, sorry, but cannibalism also happened across Europe. People living in isolated villas would steal children and eat them during harsh winters because there was no food. And what about "burning witches"?? And hanging people in front of crowds?? And having theatres where people could see men getting killed by bears and lions?? Yeah, very civilized. When white people kill is called "progress" but when brown people kill it's called "being a savage". That's racism in History books. Also you don't know anything about the so called "conquest". The Spanish were not trying to save anyone, they just wanted gold in the hope that that would free them from the arabs. They were desperate, dirty, and ignorant people who, in their desperation and ignorance, destroyed the MOST advanced civilization there was at the time. While the europeans were throwing shit onto the streets and getting disgusting diseases, the empires in Mexico had clean and well designed cities with running water, plenty of food and public healthcare. The Mayas invented the calendar you use, they invented the zero and could predict earthquakes; the Aztecs were incredible engineers, astronomers and already knew the things Darwin and Mendel published 300 years later. They created the corn you eat, thanks to them you have chocolate and even bubblegum. They don't teach white kids all this because it would be too humiliating.

Death plays a huge roll in spiritual thought and theory of the Ancient Nahua/Azteca people (my ancestors), it results in a chain of command of sorts based on how you died...that would determine which of the after life and under world "dimensions" you would end up at. That After Life/Under World is called Mictlan. Today the most embraced aspect of Mictlan growing all over the world is today know as La Santisima Muerte/ Holy Death a.k.a. Mictecacihuatl.

Because these didn't wind up in the Museum because they were stolen. And there is no "my people" to return them to. The Mexican State is not the direct inheritor of the Aztec. It's shocking to me how many morons there are who just want to complain about made-up nonsense rather than be GLAD that these treasures are safely kept, available to all, shared with the world, and cared for by world class conservators. It seems to me like THAT might be something you'd appreciate if these truly were created by people you feel some connection to.

@@jhb1493 Yours is exactly the kind of ignorant reply I'd expect from someone who dismisses looting as if it isn't how the British Museum & other western museums 'acquired' so many of the treasures of other cultures. If you'd paid attention, you'd know the video itself (as well as other scholars) suggest the two-headed serpent could very well have been among the objects obtained by Cortes as he ransacked and destroyed the Aztec empire, brutally murdering & enslaving tens of thousands of Aztec and Indigenous people. Of course Cortes plundered in the name of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (who was also King of Spain, Archduke of Austria, Lord of the Netherlands, Duke of Burgundy, head of the House of Habsburg & ruler over half of Europe including parts of Italy). From there, whatever of the countless priceless artifacts weren't destroyed for their valuable materials (so much for your 'world class conservators' in western nations, lol) began to be bought & sold by various wealthy Europeans. The British Museum purchased the serpent in 1894 through Lord Walsingham who facilitated the transaction for a formerly wealthy Italian family who had possession of the serpent. Details were kept murky, which was the usual practice of the British Museum when purchasing priceless works of art & history that were likely stolen or looted from their country of origin. The BM acquired the spectacular Aztec turquoise 'Mask of Xiuhtecuhtli' (which is also widely believed to have been taken by Cortes & delivered to Charles V) at roughly the same time & in much the same murky way. Also, just fyi it's highly unusual that this serpent (& the Mask of Xiuhtecuhtli) survived, because another usual practice among the western art world at the time was to have priceless works like this torn apart for their gold & valuable stones so that new pieces could be constructed. That was actually the destiny of almost all the priceless Aztec turquoise works of art looted by Cortes. So really, enough with your ridiculous 'The European & British thieves kept the treasures safe! You should be thankful". The British Museum is a thief organization doing thief organization things. The beautiful works from the Mexican peoples' ancestors & predecessors belong in Mexico.

Descendent of a headhunting tribe. Our ancestors were said to have been shape shifters that survived a flood and there elders that taught them how are bound and forever punished to the 4-corners of the world, our way of saying beyond the veil. A double headed serpent was said to have rose from the river and erected 4 poles for man to hang his first walls, build the first long house upon, somewhere man could write his own story. The nobles or eldest sons were initiats to what is always described as a secret society, initiates of the Wildman. A ritual to be possessed by the spirit of a giant man-eating cannibal -- Baxbakwalanuksiwe. His story is only told during red cedar winter ceremonies. A giant man eating cannibal with an eagle mask placed on there 3rd eye with slave/pet mythical man-eating birds is looking down at us from the spirit world bestowing rights and artificacts to purify the world.

In most cases cannabalosm and head hunting had very important spiritual reason and meanings. As a dependant of Mezo people I always come across this elitist pronouncement our ancestors did these things because of barbarism and savage natures. They refuse to shelve personal judgement and discount the same sorts of things that they have in the past of their people. Especially in cases of colonialism or the noble savage views that happened in scientific circles around the Victorian, perhaps even earlier. Also the snake or serpent wasn't always a maligned creatur. In the times before Christian feminization, the serpent was seen as Sacred, Children of Mother Earth..used in temples, given difference, emblematic of wisdom, medicine, prophecy, fertility, and power. In fact there were places that snakes would be left bowls of milk in villages and cities. Seen as helpmate, good omen, and treasured by the populace. Let them call our forebears what they will, but remind them of thier own unaccepted problematic pasts. None has a tight today to measure our histories and stories by what they say they were not the same nature in thier's...

The initiation of the Wildman is about taming and self control, the cannibal spirit that possesses you, its about not being controlled by anger or sadness. Shapeshifting isn't limited to your appearance. It was a secret society for future leaders.
